Day 3 pick flashing dynamic playmaking at Chargers training camp
Wide receiver was a huge area of need ahead of the NFL draft for the Chargers. Tre Harris out of Ole Miss was the flashy selection with the 55th overall pick. The front office took another wideout later in the draft in the fifth round, though, and he's flown a bit under the radar. That would be KeAndre Lambert-Smith, who played his final collegiate season in the SEC at Auburn. The abrupt retirement of Mike Williams last week has opened up the door for more opportunities in that wide receiver room. Lambert-Smith has been the one who has taken advantage of them. Over the last few days of training camp, Lambert has earned rave reviews with several stellar plays. He has shown an innate ability to track down the ball in the air, a trait that the Chargers could certainly use from their wide receiver room. A few days ago, offensive coordinator Greg Roman compared the rookie to former NFL wideout Brandon Lloyd. Roman has been impressed by everything Lambert-Smith has shown, including his speed and movement skills. He's being forced into action a bit earlier than expected, but he's passed the test with flying colors. His emergence, along with Quentin Johnston's impressive start to camp, makes it less of a necessity for the Chargers to go sign another wideout. They may just feel comfortable enough to stick with this unit if they continue to perform like this. Not only does Lambert-Smith feel like a lock for the 53-man roster, but he seems ready to earn some early playing time in Year 1. Background Age: 27 Position: Running back Experience: Fifth season 2025 cap hit: $5.25 million 2024 recap Harris has consistently been a productive running back since entering the league back in 2021, and this past season was no different. Harris was third in the conference in carries (263) and fourth in rushing yards (1,043). His 1,326 yards from scrimmage were the most he's had since his Pro Bowl season in 2021. Harris also had nine rushes for at least 20 yards, tying for the fifth-most in the NFL. Furthermore, he led the Steelers in total touchdowns (6). Advertisement 2025 outlook The Chargers struggled to find efficiency in the running game in Greg Roman's first season as the team's offensive coordinator. Some of it had to do with injuries, as Gus Edwards played in just 11 games while J.K. Dobbins played in 13. To get more from the position, they added arguably one of the most durable backs. Harris has never missed a game in his professional career, finishing with at least 284 touches in all four of his seasons. Harris, who is the only active player in the NFL to have at least 1,000 rushing yards in each of the last four seasons, will be crucial to having success on the ground alongside rookie Omarion Hampton. Big question: Can Harris continue to play the way he has and provide a boost for the Chargers' rushing offense? We're counting down our 30 Most Important Chargers of 2025.
