Why are flights delayed in Phoenix today? Here's what happened at Sky Harbor Airport
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport experienced a ground stop on Thursday, May 8, because of a disabled aircraft on the runway, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The ground stop, which is when planes cannot take off from an airport, began around 8:30 a.m. and was lifted around 9:45 a.m., according to the FAA's National Airspace System. The Phoenix airport experienced departure delays averaging 30 minutes because of the ground stop. The departure delay remained in effect until shortly after 10 a.m. Airlines delayed 142 flights out of Sky Harbor and canceled one flight as of 11:30 a.m. Thursday, according to the flight tracking website FlightAware. The disabled plane on the runway at Sky Harbor Airport was a Boeing 737-800 jet operating Delta Air Lines Flight 1447, flying to Phoenix from Salt Lake City, according to information from FlightAware and Sky Harbor spokesman Greg Roybal. The Delta flight "landed and was towed to its gate," Roybal said, requiring the airport to close the runway for about an hour. FlightAware data showed Delta Flight 1447 landed at 8:35 a.m. and was on the runway for 54 minutes. A spokesperson for Delta told The Arizona Republic that the flight crew reported an issue with the plane's hydraulic system upon landing in Phoenix. The plane landed safely and none of the 154 passengers and six crew were injured. Delta's maintenance team is evaluating the plane. The news you need to start your day. Sign up for AZ Briefing. The FAA can order a ground stop when it's not safe for flights to take off or land at an airport. It can also order a ground delay, which is when flights destined for an airport experiencing adverse conditions must delay their takeoffs, according to the FAA. The FAA can order a ground delay or ground stop but it does not cancel flights. Beloved local Mexican restaurant is coming to the Phoenix airport. Here's when
A fan-favorite Mexican restaurant with locations throughout metro Phoenix is preparing its first airport location. Tacos Chiwas will open at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Terminal 4 near the B gates. A construction barrier displaying the restaurant's logo, pictures of taco bowls and the words "coming soon" was recently installed in front of the future location. The Chiwas Group announced the Phoenix airport restaurant in an October Instagram post on future openings, but didn't give an exact date. Tacos Chiwas will join a long list of Arizona restaurants with a presence at Sky Harbor. Others include Blanco Tacos + Tequila and O.H.S.O. Brewing − recognized among the nation's best airport food and drink by USA Today readers − and Matt's Big Breakfast, which is next door to the Taco Chiwas location. Guy Fieri, Garrett Popcorn: All the new restaurants coming to Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport in early 2025 Tacos Chiwas is scheduled to open in late April, airport spokesman Greg Roybal told The Arizona Republic. Because Tacos Chiwas' Phoenix airport location will be run by the SSP concessionaire and not the restaurant owners, the menu will be different from the Phoenix and Mesa restaurants. According to a Phoenix New Times interview with the owners, diners can expect tacos, burritos and salads at the airport location. But it won't have gorditas, a specialty that Guy Fieri sampled when Tacos Chiwas was featured on "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives." Armando Hernandez and Nadia Holguin own Tacos Chiwas, which has locations in Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa. The restaurant's food is inspired by the cuisine of their native Chihuahua, Mexico. They were nominated for Outstanding Restaurateur in the 2024 James Beard Awards for Tacos Chiwas and its sister restaurant, Cocina Chiwas, which opened in 2023 in Tempe's car-free apartment community Culdesac. The owners frequently collaborate with fellow James Beard Award nominee Roberto Centeno, acclaimed for his work with Bacanora in Phoenix and Espiritu in Mesa. Together, they run the modern Mexican restaurant Santo Arcadia and a newly opened burger restaurant in Mesa called Main Burgers. Cocina Chiwas and Santo Arcadia were featured in The Republic's 2025 list of the 100 essential restaurants in metro Phoenix. Tacos Chiwas was featured in the 2024 list.
