A thief is understood to have sprayed a shop keeper with ammonia during a robbery at the Hawthorn Street USave store. A thug hurled ammonia at a Scots shop worker in a horror robbery. ‌ At around 9pm on Saturday August 16, a man, who was working in a corner shop in Glasgow, was sprayed with a substance - now understood to be ammonia - during a burglary. ‌ The thief made off with a sum of money from the USave store on Hawthorn Street in the Springburn area of the city. ‌ A 24-year-old shop keeper was rushed to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary for treatment as the suspect fled the scene. Fresh details about the brutal attack which landed the worker in hospital have been revealed to the Record. A colleague, who wished to be anonymous, said: "A guy came in to rob the store but failed to get all that he wanted. "He threw ammonia over my colleague. He's still in hospital but he is doing better." Police Scotland say their enquiries remain ongoing as they try to trace the man responsible. ‌ Detective Sergeant Greg Turnbull said: 'This was an extremely frightening experience for the shop worker which left him with serious injuries requiring hospital treatment. 'Extensive enquiries are ongoing to trace the man responsible and we are asking anyone who knows who he is or where he might be to get in touch. 'We are also asking anyone who saw anything before or after the robbery to make contact. Please also check private CCTV and dash-cam footage to see if you have captured something that could assist with our investigation.' ‌ A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'Around 9.05pm on Saturday, August 16, we received a report of a man spraying a substance at a staff member at a shop on Hawthorn Street in Glasgow. 'Emergency services attended, and the member of staff, a 24-year-old man, was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary for treatment. The man responsible made off, and enquiries are ongoing to trace him.' ‌ A social media post read: "Officers are appealing for information following a robbery at a shop on Hawthorn Street in Glasgow. "The incident happened around 9.05pm on Saturday, 16 August, when a man entered the premises and sprayed a staff member with a substance before making off with a sum of cash. "Emergency services attended and the staff member, a 24-year-old man, was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary for treatment. The suspect is described as white and of slim build. "He was wearing a green and grey tracksuit top with a zip, orange shorts, black socks and black trainers. He left in the direction of Memel Street." Anyone who can help is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 3850 of Saturday, 16 August, 2025, or make a call anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
