'If I die, it was Greg': Rehoboth man confesses to stabbing pregnant girlfriend, DA says

TAUNTON — A 22-year-old Rehoboth man charged with fatally stabbing his 18-year-old pregnant girlfriend was ordered held without bail in Taunton District Court Wednesday — as the prosecution shared harrowing new details of the victim's final moments. Gregory Groom, 22, of Rehoboth, confessed to police that he stabbed Kylee Monteiro multiple times in the neck and chest with a kitchen knife before burying her body in a hole on his property, Assistant District Attorney Jason Mohan said in court on Wednesday, Aug. 20. "The stab wound to her chest actually broke the blade off," Mohan said. Groom pleaded not guilty Wednesday to murder, assault and battery on a pregnant victim, assault and battery on a family or household member and aggravated witness intimidation in connection to the alleged altercation with Monteiro on Wednesday, Aug. 6. Groom is scheduled for a probable cause hearing on Sept. 10. 'My phone is at 4% and if I die, it was Greg': What investigation revealed Groom contacted the Rehoboth Police Department on Aug. 8 to report his ex-girlfriend, identified as Monteiro, missing, Mohan said in court. Groom initially told police he last saw Monteiro walking down the driveway of his property, located at 107 County St. in Rehoboth, after the two got into an argument over whether he would allow her to stay on the property. When Monteiro failed to contact family and friends and update social media in the days following her disappearance, police interviewed Groom again, where he reported Monteiro was approximately 11 weeks pregnant and that he was the father of the baby, according to Mohan. When police questioned Monteiro's family members, they learned she had texted her sister about the Aug. 6 altercation that, 'he threw me on the ground, pulled my hair, strangled me. My phone is at 4% and if I die, it was Greg',' Mohan said. On Aug. 14, Massachusetts State Police, including their Underwater Recovery, Air Wing and K-9 units, searched Groom's 25-acre County Street property. Nothing of significance was found during that search, Mohan said. During a third interview with police, Groom admitted he pushed Monteiro and that she fell back and hit her head during the reported altercation on Aug. 6. At that time, he was going to be charged with the two assault and battery and witness intimidation charges, according to Mohan. Defendant drew map for police, confessed to stabbing and burying body: Prosecution When investigators pressed Groom on Monteiro's whereabouts, they informed him they had a search warrant for his property, including cadaver dogs, excavators and chemists from the state's crime lab. When given an opportunity to confess, Groom drew a rudimentary map with the approximate location of where he'd buried Monteiro's body, Mohan said. He admitted the two got into an argument behind a shed on the property, where he stabbed her twice in the neck and once in the chest. Groom told police he spent several hours digging a hole approximately 20 yards away from where he killed her. As the sun came up, he pushed her body into the hole and covered it up with dirt and brush, Mohan said. According to Mohan, police discovered a body consistent with Monteiro's in a hole near the shed approximately five feet underground. The prosecution asked the judge to hold Groom without bail. Defendant held without bail Groom's defense attorney Elliot Levine did not argue with the prosecution's request for his client to be held without bail. Judge Michael Brennan ordered Groom held without bail pending a probable cause hearing scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 10. Levine declined a request for comment from The Enterpise as he was leaving the courtroom. 'All of the evidence points to the defendant', Bristol DA In a press conference outside the courtroom, Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn said Monteiro's body is undergoing official identification by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Quinn said it's too early to determine motive and that the investigation is ongoing. "But all of the evidence points to the defendant at this point," Quinn said. Body of missing pregnant 18-year-old found, ex-boyfriend confessed to murder

Officials in Massachusetts have arrested the ex-boyfriend of a missing 18-year-old who was 11 weeks pregnant, after he allegedly confessed to murdering her and showed detectives where her body was buried, according to prosecutors. Kylee Monteiro, a recent high school graduate who was 11 weeks pregnant, had been missing since Aug. 7, police and her family said. She had last been seen in the area of Country Street in Rehoboth, Mass., according to police. Gregory Groom, Monteiro's ex-boyfriend, was arrested on Tuesday after he allegedly confessed to murdering Monteiro last week, Bristol County, Mass., prosecutors said during Groom's arraignment on Wednesday. On Aug. 8, Groom contacted police, saying that his girlfriend was missing and reporting that she had been "at his house, she was looking for a place to stay, they got into an argument and that she ultimately left his residence," prosecutors said. Groom further said that she "hadn't been seen or heard from since," according to prosecutors. After friends and family hadn't heard from Monteiro, police visited Groom's residence and began an investigation, prosecutors said. Groom told investigators that Monteiro was 11 weeks pregnant and had told him that he was the unborn child's father, according to prosecutors. He further said that on Aug. 6, the day before Monteiro disappeared, she had "left a residential program and took a rideshare to his house" and was looking to stay with him, prosecutors said. Groom said his argument with Monteiro was about "whether or not he would allow her to stay on his property," according to prosecutors. An ABC News request for additional comment sent to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office did not immediately receive a response. According to prosecutors, Monteiro also allegedly told her sister that her "phone is at 4% and if I die, it was Greg," The family tried to get in touch with Monteiro to move her to a safer location but she replied that she was "attempting to continue to stay at Mr. Groom's residence," prosecutors said. Officials conducted a search of Groom's 25-acre property on Aug. 14 but "nothing of significance was found," prosecutors said. Then on Tuesday, Groom reported to police for another interview and allegedly admitted that on Aug. 6, he had gotten into an altercation with Monteiro during which he "pushed her, she fell backwards and she hit her head," prosecutors said. At that point, Groom began to draw a "rudimentary map" showing a shed on his property "where he was known to stay" and where he allegedly said that the argument between him and Monteiro took place, according to prosecutors. He allegedly confessed that he stabbed Monteiro "twice in the neck and once in the chest," and that the stab wound in the chest broke off the knife's blade, prosecutors said. Boyfriend arrested as police continue to search for Kylee Monteiro in Rehoboth

The boyfriend of a missing 18-year-old pregnant woman is now facing assault and witness intimidation charges while police continue to search for Kylee Monteiro in Rehoboth. Police arrested Gregory Groom on Tuesday in connection with the disappearance of Kylee Monteiro, who has been missing since Aug. 7. Police have also launched another search in the wooded area of County Street in Rehoboth, where Monteiro was last seen. Kylee is three months pregnant and just graduated from Attleboro High School. Her sister, Faith Montiero, said she is hoping that Kylee is found alive, but she fears the worst. "I'm scared. I'm really scared," said Faith. "I don't know if they have her, but some part of me feels like they do." Kylee's boyfriend, Groom, has been charged with aggravated assault and battery on a pregnant person, domestic assault and battery and intimidation of a witness for acts that police say he committed against Kylee Monteiro. Kylee's sister, Faith Montiero, said Groom's family owns about 26 acres of woods, much of it undeveloped, in the area police are searching. Faith also claimed her sister and Groom had argued the day before Monteiro disappeared. "There was an altercation that happened the night before she went missing, but that's the only thing," Faith said. "We went out looking for her again the other day." Faith said she loves her sister, who is a kind, happy person. Groom is being held without bail and will be arraigned on Wednesday in Taunton District Court.
