Officer killed, suspect dead after shooting near CDC in Atlanta
A suspected gunman and a police officer are dead after law enforcement responded to reports of an active shooter near the adjoining campuses of the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and Emory University on Saturday, authorities said. No civilians are believed to have been injured, but several rounds hit buildings on the CDC's sprawling campus, said Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum. The officer who died "received gunfire" during the shooting, DeKalb County Police Chief Gregory Padrick said. Officials earlier said that the officer was critically injured at the scene and taken to the hospital. The shooter was armed with a long gun, and authorities recovered three other firearms at the scene, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to discuss the ongoing investigation. The gunman was found on the second floor of a building across the street from the CDC and died at the scene, Schierbaum said. Authorities said there is no longer a threat to the public. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said the man's motive is not known because investigation is still in the "preliminary stages". Staff at a nearby deli said they heard what sounded like a string of gunshots. "It sounded like fireworks going off, one right after the other," said Brandy Giraldo, the chief operating officer of The General Muir restaurant. Emory University announced in a post on X that the shelter-in-place order on campus had been lifted, but asked people to avoid the area. By around 6pm (local time), a warning siren repeatedly sounded near the Emory and CDC campuses, as law enforcement vehicles parked throughout the streets. (Source: Associated Press) Governor Brian Kemp praised the efforts of first responders. ADVERTISEMENT "Twice this week, deranged criminals have targeted innocent Georgians," Kemp said, referring to the shooting at Fort Stewart. "Each time, brave first responders rushed toward the danger to subdue the shooter and save lives, reminding us of just how crucial they are." Emory's main campus, Emory University Hospital and the CDC are surrounded by affluent wooded neighbourhoods in northeast Atlanta. All three institutions line up along Clifton Rd. The area is hard to access, and notoriously traffic-choked, but on Friday few cars were in evidence. Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr said "we're horrified by the news out of Emory University and praying for the safety of the entire campus community".

Operation Safe Streets: DeKalb County police announce new safety checkpoints
The DeKalb County Police Department announced Friday that homicides in the county were down almost 49% but they were taking new steps to deter crime in the community. According to DKPD, they'll be deploying new safety checkpoints in 'high crime areas' to both deter crime and reduce traffic fatalities. The new strategy is being called 'Operation Safe Streets,' according to the police department. The program has already been rolled out, with a checkpoint operation on April 11. At the checkpoint, officers screened drivers for valid driver's licenses, registration, insurance, impaired driving and equipment violations, while passing out traffic safety and educational materials. 'Whether it's reducing violent crime or preventing street racing, my administration is committed to supporting proactive policing efforts that keep DeKalb residents safe. The progress we are seeing—particularly the nearly 49% reduction in homicides compared to this time last year—is a testament to the dedication and strategic coordination of our law enforcement agencies.' Over the April 11 weekend, police made six arrests, issued 60 traffic citations and recovered 1.5 pounds of marijuana in addition to seizing multiple vehicles. DKPD said there have been 26 motor vehicle fatalities in the county this year, so far, with the main reasons being impaired driving and speeding. 'This type of operation helps us reduce crashes, identify impaired drivers, and ensure that motorists are operating their vehicles safely and legally,' Interim DKPD Police Chief Gregory Padrick. 'Our goal is not just enforcement—but prevention. We want to stop tragedies before they happen and build stronger relationships with the communities we serve.' County officials said the safety checkpoint also came after a 'successful joint Georgia State Patrol-DeKalb Police operation' that had officers infiltrate an 'organized street racing ring,' which led to 11 arrests, 10 impounded cars, recovery of guns and four people with outstanding felony warrants. Cochran-Johnson said she will do everything she can to be tough on crime in the county and that 'we have too many people living in fear of street racers, car invasions and lawless individuals,' promising to 'double down' on undercover operations.
