Former Springbok Dawie Snyman dies
Former Springbok utility back and legendary Western Province coach Dawie Snyman has passed away following a recent diagnosis of leukemia. He was 76. Snyman, a product of Grey College in Bloemfontein, moved to the Cape to further his studies and rugby career at Stellenbosch University. He went on to earn 10 Test caps for the Springboks between 1972 and 1977, representing South Africa with distinction during a turbulent era in the sport's history. Following his playing career, Snyman left an indelible mark as a coach, leading Western Province to a record five consecutive Currie Cup titles from 1982 to 1986 – a golden era for the union that cemented his legacy in South African rugby. Rugby excellence ran in the family. Snyman's brother, Jackie, also played for the Springboks in the 1970s. Jackie's son Dawie currently serves as an assistant coach for the Stormers. The South African rugby community was quick to pay tribute to Snyman's immense contribution to the game, both on and off the field. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days. Former Springbok, legendary WP coach Dawie Snyman dies
Former Springbok utility back and Western Province coach Dawie Snyman died at the age of 76 on Thursday. News24 understands that Snyman was diagnosed with leukemia about a month ago. Snyman, who could operate at flyhalf and fullback, played 10 Tests for the Springboks between 1972 and 1977. Snyman was schooled at Grey College in Bloemfontein, but moved down to the Cape after school to study at Stellenbosch University, where he played for Maties. He had the rare distinction of being called up to the Springboks without playing provincial rugby, touring with the 1971 Boks to Australia. He did not play a Test, though, and made his Western Province debut later in 1971. His Test debut came the following year against England at Ellis Park. Arguably the highlight of Snyman's career was featuring in the 1976 home series against the All Blacks which the Boks won 3-1. After his playing career ended, Snyman became a renowned coach of Western Province and was at the helm of the team whey they won the Currie Cup a record five times in a row from 1982-1986. Snyman's brother, Jackie, was also a Springbok utility back in the 1970s. Jackie's son, also Dawie, is currently the Stormers' assistant coach.

Boys from Bloem dismantle Grey High in clinical display
Grey College delivered a masterclass in precision rugby to blow away Gqeberha rivals Grey High 48-10 on a windy Kolisi Field in their King Price Derby Series schools rugby clash on Saturday. The home team may have been disappointed with their lack of accuracy at times, but that cannot detract from the ruthlessly clinical performance of Grey College, who swept in for six tries in the first half to lead 38-0 at the break. As committed as College were on defence, so were they lethal on attack, typified by their third try when the Gqeberha team were camped in their opponents' 22. The Bloem team were quick to sense an opportunity for a counter-ruck, which won them the ball, and it was sent to outstanding fullback Lamla Mgedezi, who went on a thrilling 70-metre run for a try. While Grey High had their chances early on, they struggled to break down the visiting defence. In contrast, Grey College wasted no time in seizing their opportunities as they showed with two tries from a powerful maul in the first 16 minutes. It was no surprise that, when the home team infringed twice in succession, Grey College kicked for touch and then drove their way over for Xander Smit to score their first try and Alexi Tyropolis to cross over a bit later in similar circumstances. The magical Mgedezi then showed his influence before powerful centre Ethan Adams proved unstoppable on the left flank as Grey College went on the attack again. Smit registered his second try after another driving maul and the visitors showed their confidence and attacking skill when they won an opposing line-out on the halfway line with the clock showing time up for halftime. Instead of kicking the ball safely into touch, Grey College launched another offensive and as they spread the ball wide, Mgedezi sent a deft back-of-the-hand pass for wing Benjamin van den Berg to sprint over for the first of his two tries. It looked ominous for the Grey High team at the break, but to their credit, they stayed in the fight until the end, in fact scoring three tries to the two of their opponents in the second half. The first came in the 44th minute when a slick backline move saw centre Bradley Myburgh bamboozle the College defence to score near the poles. Later on, lively wing Noah Mbizi was on hand to score two outstanding tries as he showed great commitment and pace to dodge his way through the visiting defence. Those were negated somewhat by Grey College's strong running, with centre O'Ryan Klein always in the thick of things, which saw them cross for further tries by Van den Berg and left wing Thristan Maree. Grey High enjoyed one of their best rugby years in terms of overall performance, with nine wins in the 20 matches. The Herald

Schools rugby fixtures: Paarl derby one of the biggest games of the year
Other big fixtures include Jeppe against KES, Waterkloof against Affies, and Grey High taking on Grey College. One of the most important school rugby fixtures plays out this weekend as Paarl Gim host Paarl Boys High. Paarl Gim have been unstoppable at the top of the schools rugby table this year, going unbeaten in 15 games. Their neighbours lie second and will want to carry momentum from their 51–8 win over SACS last weekend into this fixture. Especially as they lost 30–8 in the derby last year. But this is just one of the four King Price Schools Derby Series matches playing out. Jeppe High School for Boys' take on King Edward VII (KES) in a Joburg rivalry while Waterkloof host Affies in a Pretoria derby. In the Eastern Cape, Grey High School take on Grey College. However, Dale College's fixture against Graeme College may be an even larger game. Paarl Gimnasium prodigy Markus Muller to captain SA Schools side
Markus Muller (SA Schools) and Jeandre Uithaler (SA Schools 'A') will captain their respective sides in the annual clash between the cream of the crop in South Africa's schoolboy rugby at Hoërskool Middelburg in Mpumalanga on Thursday. Muller, centre from Western Province and Paarl Gimnasium, will lead the team running out in green and gold, while the Uithaler, the Golden Lions and Noorheuwel's flyhalf, will run in front of the team in the alternative white and green strip. With Josh Neill being ruled out of action for the encounter, only seven players from last year's teams will feature again. Muller will be joined in the SA Schools matchday squad by lock AJ Meyer (Grey College), centre Ethan Adams (Grey College), fullback Zekhethelo Siyaya (Westville) and replacement prop Jordan Jooste (Paarl Boys High). André Poulton (prop, Jeppe) and Briint Davids (flanker, Milnerton) are the two returning players in the SA Schools 'A' starting team. Quinton Potgieter (replacement flanker, Paarl Gimnasium) has taken Neill's place in the SA Schools team, with his place in the 'A' squad going to Elwin Janse van Vuuren of Affies. Ian Schwartz, SA Rugby's General Manager for Participation and Development, urged the players to make the most of this opportunity to showcase their talent. 'We celebrate not just the talent on the field, but the journey that brought them here. This fixture is more than a match – it's a showcase of South Africa's schools rugby depth, resilience, and promise,' said Schwartz. 'These teams represent the best of the best that were in action at the FNB U18 Craven Week, and we can't wait to see them in action, with the Under-18 International Series on the horizon. 'No less than seven players who were in the SA Schools team last year, are now part of the Junior Bok squad at the World Rugby U20 Championship in Italy – Cheswill Jooste, Riley Norton, Siphosethu Mnebelele, Phiwayinkosi 'Rambo' Kubheka, Oliver Reid, Vusi Moyo and Alzeadon Felix – and this is where they took their first steps in green and gold. 'All of these players are part of our Elite Player Development (EPD) programme and to see them in action on Thursday, will be just reward for all the hard work done by our EPD structures in SA Rugby ecosystem, as well as the SA Schools Selectors. 'They have selected two squads of highly talented players, but even for those who didn't make the squads, the doors will never be closed and I want to urge all our youngsters to never give up on chasing their dreams. Let this match be a celebration of growth, grit, and greatness. The pathway may differ, but the destination is shared.'
