Five suspects arrested and firearms recovered in Umzinyathi area crime crackdown
The Umzinyathi District Crime Intelligence Unit has over the past week made key breakthroughs against violent crime, arresting five suspects and seizing illegal firearms during recent operations.
Police spokesperson Constable Siyabonga Nkwanyana stated that the suspects, aged between 26 and 47, were detained during two intelligence-driven raids. Some are linked to murder cases in the Greytown and Nquthu policing precincts.
In the early hours of Wednesday, Umzinyathi Crime Intelligence, working in conjunction with the Greytown Crime Prevention Unit, raided the Gugulethu Location. A suspect wanted for a Msinga business robbery in June was arrested. A second man was also detained after being found with two unlicensed pistols and ammunition.
The following day, Umzinyathi Crime Intelligence joined the Nquthu Crime Prevention Unit for a raid in Qhudeni. Two suspects were arrested in connection with a double murder and attempted double murder in KwaNgqulu in November 2023. One suspect was in possession of an unlicensed .38 Special revolver and ammunition.
The operation later led to the arrest of a fifth suspect at a second location, where another unlicensed firearm and ammunition were seized.
All confiscated weapons will undergo ballistic testing to determine whether they were used in other crimes. The suspects are expected to appear in the Greytown and Nquthu Magistrates' Courts soon.
