Red Trump sculpture pops up from a Manhattan manhole. White House responds
On the morning of July 23, New Yorkers were taken by surprise when a bright red sculpture of US President Donald Trump appeared at a busy Manhattan intersection, seemingly climbing out of a manhole. The life-size artwork, titled Donald, was secretly installed by French street artist James Colomina at the corner of East 42nd Street and 2nd Avenue. Colomina, known for his provocative red sculptures placed unannounced in public spaces, told USA Today the location was intentional: 'I installed the sculpture in New York because this is where he built his image, his empire, his legend,' he said, as per USA Today. 'A city he tried to conquer with golden towers and brutal slogans. I wanted this image, a red body rising from the sewers, to disturb that landscape.' The sculpture, made of red resin, depicted Trump from the waist up in a suit and tie, his expression stern, lips pursed, and eyes cast upward toward the skyscrapers. Tucked beneath the manhole cover, part of the sculpture, was a small red rat, peering out. The installation faced the Chrysler Building, a placement Colomina said was deliberate: 'The sculpture is installed right across from the Chrysler Building, a symbol of power, elevation, and architectural pride. I liked the idea of creating a stark contrast between this vertical monument and the grotesque figure emerging from the sewers.' Colomina, who posted an image of the sculpture to his Instagram story with the caption 'Make America Grime Again,' said he spent about three weeks creating the piece in his studio in France. He shipped it to New York in parts and reassembled it on-site around 7 am local time. But the artwork didn't stay up for long. Later that day, a maintenance worker with SL Green Realty Corp, which owns the building where the statue appeared, removed it. The Trump administration dismissed the installation. White House Deputy Press Secretary Abigail Jackson told USA Today: 'Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. This 'artist' will have to go back to the drawing board. Or perhaps art school.' Colomina is widely recognised for his clandestine, eye-catching public art. His red-painted sculptures, often depicting political or social commentary, have appeared in global cities like Tokyo, Barcelona, and Paris. According to his biography on the Galeries Bartoux website, Colomina's signature style, dubbed 'Colomina Red,' is intended to evoke 'anger, passion, and urgency' around contemporary issues. He prefers unsanctioned placements, using the element of surprise to provoke reflection in ordinary urban settings. (With inputs from USA Today)

Victoria Monet reveals she 'fell deeply' for Stormzy after going public
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Victoria Monet has reflected on her time dating Stormzy several months after the pair were spotted kissing. Grammy winner Victoria appeared on the Baby, This Is Keke Palmer podcast where the Nope star recalled encountering Stormzy at the Met Gala and how they discussed how 'amazing' Victoria was between themselves. The R&B singer, 36, who appeared slightly flustered by the turn in conversation, said: 'Yeah, you know he is a really special guy, I have so much respect for him and I got to learn more about him by dating him.' The mother-of-one then continued: 'I fell deeply, so deeply for him and we didn't even get together yet. The first time [the internet] saw us in that viral picture was the first time we were hanging out in his city so I was like 'oh my god, it's everywhere before we're even starting'. Keke agreed that that must have been hard to 'navigate'. The snaps of the pair kissing, which surfaced in October, were not addressed by either party at the time and from the sounds of it their brief entanglement is in the past. An eyewitness told The Sun as the time: 'Both Stormzy and Victoria looked absolutely smitten with each other. They kissed, and when he hugged her, he picked her up in the air. It seems like he is in a great place after his split from Maya.' The kiss came three months after the Grime star's – real name Michael Owuo Jr. -highly-public split from Love Island host Maya Jama, 30, who had dated each other from 2014 to 2019 and then from 2023 to 2024. Victoria's latest remarks – confirming a romantic moment between the pair – come as Maya went social media official with her relationship with football star Ruben Dias. The media personality posted a very romantic looking getaway with Ruben on the Amalfi Coast. She filmed Ruben rubbing suncream into his shoulders with the caption, 'Perve cam,' after months of speculation about the couple. It looks as though Maya met the Portuguese footballer at the European Music Awards (EMAs) in November and since then the loved-up duo have been spotted together regularly. Stormzy and Maya's joint break up statement in July 2024, read: 'We still think the absolute world of each other, we still care and respect each other, we are still grateful for the time we've had together, and we are still friends and will always be friends.' In November – before she connected with Ruben – Maya explained what she was looking for in a future partner in an interview with The Standard. More Trending 'I am so happy right now but the next person I meet I want to marry and have kids with, so obviously I'm feeling fussy. ''I've created such a nice life for myself alone and I don't want anyone who's not going to add to that. I'm in this lovely bubble and I don't want you unless you make me happy. If you're not, I kind of don't need you. 'One thing I've learned: some people are like, 'I'm lonely, I need someone.' But the mission in life is to make yourself happy, then find someone who brings something that matches that to the table,' she said at the time. Got a story? Wretch 32, Home?: dazzling work from a once-reckless youth
Did you ever expect to hear a grime rapper busting rhymes about accountancy problems? Amidst an atmospheric swirl of samples and beats on the opening track of his ambitious and compelling seventh album Home?, veteran grime star Wretch 32 does exactly that. 'I'm the GOAT but I can't afford my mortgage!' the 40-year-old Jermaine Scott snaps with pained outrage on Transitional Chapter. 'Asking my accountant how my wins become my losses? / You suffer when you boss it, try'na tweak my outgoings / There's an office in my office!' Reviewing his life, Wretch (to give him his Grime name) offers moving thoughts on the struggles of a hard-scrabble youth: 'We're deep in the gutter / Where we reached for our mothers / But they're working overtime / So there wasn't time to hug us / Now the streets we becometh.' But it's not long before he's mischievously complaining, 'I preferred when dodging bullets was my problem / This tax robbing isn't common in the House of Commons.' Right now, Northern Irish rap trio Kneecap are mired in controversy over provocative remarks, with cancelled concerts and an investigation by the Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism Command. It doesn't seem so long ago that grime was a similar target, with police breaking up concerts and then-Prime Minister David Cameron denouncing the genre for 'encouraging people to carry knives and guns.' Yet in recent years, veteran Grime artists including Kano, Ghetts, Skepta and Headie One have been producing complex autobiographical works, while breakout star Stormzy has become a national treasure – his forthcoming collaboration with the National Theatre affirming hs status as an establishment figure. Having survived its reckless youth, grime has matured into one of modern Britain's richest musical styles, and this dazzling work from Wretch 32 is up there with the best. In truth, Wretch (a nickname from his mother, meaning skinny in Jamaican slang) has long been one of the most serious-minded and socially conscious grime artists. A former member of the Combination Chain Gang, he has scored pop hits, written books and poetry, and now holds a senior role as Creative Director with 0207 Def Jam. Like the best rap albums, Home? is infused with musicality, drawing on reggae, afrobeat, garage and R'n'B, punctuated by horns, guitars and a swimmy dubby sensuality. Wretch is a sharp wordsmith who also sings with a raw sweetness reminiscent of Bob Marley. It is a collaborative medium, and Wretch has marshalled outstanding talents: singers Angel, Teni, Protoje, Skip Marley and WSTRN, with punchy contributions from Little Simz, Ghetts and Top Boy star Kano. Soundbites from documentary Scenes From The Farm, about life on Tottenham's Broadwater Farm estate in the wake of the terrible mid-80s riots, give thematic focus to ideas of home and what it means to be Black and British. As a second-generation Jamaican, angered by the Windrush scandal, a sense of political frustration bubbles throughout. Yet it's not a heavy album, there's joy in the Caribbean, African and British blend, with sing-along melodies and danceable rhythms. Home? sugars bitter pills with sweet sounds. Just as revolutionaries often mature into statesmen, grime's once-controversial rebel youth are taking the reins right now in British popular music. Sometimes you just have to let people grow up.
