Democrats try to subpoena Musk in Oversight hearing
Democrats on the House Oversight Committee are trying to subpoena billionaire Tesla owner and former Trump lieutenant Elon Musk for a second time. Why it matters: Democrats think they have even better standing to compel Musk's testimony now that he is out of government, though Republicans are likely to block the move. The move to subpoena Musk came during a hearing on the use of artificial intelligence in the federal government. As the head of DOGE, Musk oversaw the integration of AI — including his own Grok AI — into federal agency workflows to analyze data and try to root out waste fraud and abuse. Flashback: Democrats on the Oversight Committee tried and failed to subpoena Musk in early February, shortly after he took up the reins of DOGE.

NBA mock draft 2025: Grok AI predictions for the entire first round Show Caption Hide Caption Dwyane Wade shares thoughts on Dallas Mavericks getting first pick NBA Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade shares his thoughts on the NBA and whether or not the Mavericks getting the first pick in the draft is a "coincidence." Sports Seriously The humans churning out NBA mock drafts and artificial intelligence are in agreement about Cooper Flagg. The Dallas Mavericks are going to take advantage of their lottery luck by making Flagg the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA draft on June 25. Everything after that, however, remains uncertain based on the latest projections. USA TODAY Sports asked Grok AI to run a simulation of every first-round pick during the 2025 NBA draft and it returned results by "synthesizing current mock draft trends, team needs, and prospect evaluations from various sources." There were a large number of expected picks, but also a few surprises that differed from the expert mock drafts, as well as previous NBA draft first-round simulations conducted using Google Gemini AI and Meta AI. Grok AI, for instance, has a different top-five than most and projects Duke to have another top-five pick in addition to Flagg. It also did not predict Jase Richardson to be chosen in the first round, despite a good chunk of human-made mock drafts that suggest otherwise. There were six international prospects among the top 30 picks by Grok AI, as well as college stars like Auburn's Johnni Broome and Florida's Walter Clayton Jr. Here's a breakdown of the 2025 NBA draft first-round picks made by a Grok AI simulation, as well as how to watch next month when the league's teams gather in Brooklyn to make their actual selections: NBA DRAFT 2025: Winners and losers after landscape-shifting college withdrawal deadline NBA draft 2025: AI predictions for every first round pick First-rounds picks and comments were generated by a Grok AI simulation of the 2025 NBA draft based on "synthesizing current mock draft trends, team needs, and prospect evaluations from various sources." Telegram announces partnership with Musk
Elon Musk's startup xAI will invest $300 million and deploy its Grok AI chatbot in partnership with the messaging app Telegram, according to a statement by the app's CEO Pavel Durov published on Wednesday. In announcing the deal, Durov said that he and Musk had agreed to a one-year partnership designed to strengthen Telegram's financial position. 'We will receive $300M in cash and equity from xAI, plus 50% of the revenue from xAI subscriptions sold via Telegram,' he said. Musk later stated on X that 'no deal has been signed,' without providing any additional details, prompting Durov to clarify that the parties had reached an agreement in principle, with formalities still to be finalized. Telegram said Grok AI is set to be integrated into Telegram, with users expected to begin accessing the AI-powered features starting this summer. Users will be able to interact with Grok directly within the app, using a built-in chatbot to generate content or engage in open-ended conversations on a wide range of topics. The partnership with xAI comes amid an effort by Telegram to raise at least $1.5 billion through a new bond issuance, including from existing backers such as BlackRock and Abu Dhabi investment firm Mubadala. Telegram is reportedly expected to use the funds to buy back debt issued through an earlier bond sale. The deal signals that investors continue to support Telegram, even as its CEO faces charges in France. Durov, whose company is based in Dubai, was arrested in France in August 2024 and accused of complicity in crimes allegedly committed by Telegram users, including extremism and child abuse. He was later released on €5 million ($5.46 million) bail. Although he was allowed to travel to the UAE in March, his recent request to visit the US was denied, and he remains under restricted supervision. Telegram's popularity continues to grow as the app maintains free services for users. In 2025, the messenger surpassed one billion monthly users and last year the app achieved over $1 billion in revenue, marking its first profitable year since introducing monetization. The company's financial growth has reportedly been driven by a surge in Telegram Premium subscribers and strong advertising performance.

Elon Musk logs out of DOGE with $160 billion savings and $135 billion setbacks, says Grok
Elon Musk has stepped down from his role as a Special Government Employee under the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The announcement, made on his platform X, followed weeks of tension over President Trump's controversial spending bill. Musk thanked Trump for the opportunity but said it was time to move on. Grok, Musk's own AI assistant, weighed in with a mixed report card on his DOGE legacy. Public reactions ranged from praise to sharp criticism, reflecting deep divisions over Musk's government stint. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Grok AI gives its take Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Musk vs. Trump on the 'big beautiful bill' Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Internet reactions: Applause, sarcasm and dissent Elon Musk has announced that he is stepping down from his role as a Special Government Employee in the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a task force he helped shape earlier this year. Musk, who had taken on the role for a limited term under US law, confirmed the decision on X, the social media platform he owns.'As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,' Musk posted on Wednesday. He added, 'The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.'But while Musk logged off from Washington, Grok—the AI chatbot built by his company xAI—logged in with its own recap of Musk's time in by an X user to summarise Musk's performance at DOGE, Grok responded with a detailed list of what it called accomplishments and consequences.'As a Special Government Employee, Elon Musk led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), claiming $160 billion in savings by terminating wasteful contracts, like $255 million from 269 contracts, and modernising IT systems, such as digitising the OPM retirement process,' Grok went on, 'DOGE also cleaned Social Security records and supported voter integrity measures. However, these efforts face criticism for potential costs of $135 billion in lost productivity, legal challenges, and service disruptions. Concerns about Musk's business conflicts and political motivations persist, with public opinion divided, as 54% view him unfavourably.'In its trademark tone, Grok concluded, 'The true impact of DOGE remains debated amid ongoing scrutiny.'Musk's exit was not entirely without tension. His departure follows public criticism of President Trump's controversial 'big beautiful bill,' a sprawling piece of legislation that includes major tax breaks and expanded defence to CBS, Musk said: 'I think a bill can be big or it could be beautiful. But I don't know if it could be both.' He described the legislation as a 'massive spending bill' that increases the federal deficit and 'undermines the work' of Trump, when asked about Musk's critique, offered a measured reply. 'Number one, we have to get a lot of votes... I'm not happy about certain aspects of it, but I'm thrilled by other aspects of it. We're going to see what happens,' Trump bill has passed the House and is currently under debate in the Senate. House Speaker Mike Johnson has cautioned senators against making significant changes, describing the outcome as a 'very delicate balance'.The internet did not hold back. Supporters praised Musk's short tenure, while critics accused him of causing more damage than good. One user wrote, 'I honestly don't know if we could've saved America if @ElonMusk hadn't spent $40 billion to buy Twitter and rescue free speech.' That same user added, 'He absolutely deserves the Presidential Medal of Freedom.'Others were far less generous. One user asked, 'What was achieved other than Elon breaking things and leaving them broken?' Another replied, 'This has damaged your brand beyond anything you can imagine.' A third comment simply read, 'DOGE has been a failed endeavour. Whether it's family, business or public, it's hard to cut the money strings after you have started them.'Elon Musk was appointed as a Special Government Employee shortly after Donald Trump returned to the White House in January. The designation, which allows service for up to 130 days per year, was due to expire in late May. His assignment was clear: streamline government operations and eliminate his term, Musk championed aggressive cost-cutting and digitisation efforts. However, critics have flagged risks—legal, operational and political. Musk also never formally met with Trump before announcing his departure, according to sources familiar with internal Grok—launched by Musk's xAI in November 2023—has become a notable voice on X. Built on a large language model with a flair for humour, Grok can access platform content in real time, providing users with commentary, summaries and occasionally, sarcasm. It's the chatbot's growing cultural presence that made its post-DOGE analysis all the more exit from public service marks a shift back to his private ventures, but his role in shaping political discourse seems far from over. The DOGE mission, at least by his account, is meant to persist. Whether it becomes 'a way of life' in government or a cautionary tale remains to be now, Musk has logged out. But Grok, and the debate, remain very much online.
