High School Sweethearts in Their 50s Spent $90K to Get Facelifts Together. Now They're Closer Than Ever (Exclusive)

Sonia and Jose started dating when they were teenagers and have now been married for 30 years In September 2024, the Grover Beach, Calif., couple decided to undergo plastic surgery procedures one day apart from each other Healed and feeling more confident, the pair opens up to PEOPLE about their joint nips-and-tucks and the ups and downs of their journeyThe couple that gets plastic surgery together, stays together. Husband and wife Jose and Sonia have known each other for what some might consider forever. After being acquainted as family friends as kids, the two began dating in high school and have been married for three decades. In September 2024, the couple, who are now in their 50s and reside in Grover Beach, Calif., decided to do something new in their marriage — and not on the level of trying a new restaurant for date night or buying a vacation home with their family. Instead, they decided to get plastic surgery at the same time. "Jose and I are pretty open about it," Sonia, 51, tells PEOPLE approximately seven months after her facial rejuvenation. She, a health center manager, has undergone cosmetic procedures before, having gotten Botox, fillers and a "Mommy Makeover" that included a breast lift and tummy tuck. But by the time she reached 50, she was more than ready to continue her journey with a facelift. "That was my goal. [She thought] when I turn 50, I won't have a big party, but I'll give myself the gift of looking refreshed again." On the other hand, Jose, 54 and the founder of construction company Quincon Inc., had never done anything to his face or body, but experienced a change of heart when Sonia casually brought up the idea of a subtle makeover. "Jose's got a baby face, but he had a little bit of excess on his neck. I told him, 'What about getting [plastic surgery] together,' since he's always been supportive of me in the past. He's been my nurse and my caregiver, so I said, 'You still have to take care of me, so why don't we take care of each other?'" Then, the couple paid a visit to Beverly Hills, Calif.-based surgeon Dr. Carl Truesdale, who is famous for his dramatic transformations on a range of patients, including his own mother. By the end of the joint consultation, Jose was on board. The pair share a son, 30, and a daughter, 24, who didn't know much about what their parents were about to get into, which Sonia and Jose wanted. "I told them I was going to get just a neck lift because I didn't want to worry them about me being under anesthesia for so long," adds Sonia. She also ended up undergoing a fat transfer procedure, buccal fat removal, a lip lift and some eye work involving a lid lift and what is called a lower eye pinch, which is the removal of excess fat from the lower eyelid area. Jose kept plans of his neck and facelift under the radar until after his procedure was completed. "I wanted to keep it more just between me and Sonia. I just wanted to keep it quiet." Surgery time came and went for the couple, who decided to space their operations one day apart from each other. Sonia went first (by her preference) and spent nearly half a day on the operating table. While she recovered, Jose went in next for his six-hour procedure. Sonia's procedures in total cost approximately $60,000, while Jose's hit around $30,000. Post-operation, each were monitored by a nurse aid who made sure everything went according to plan. Jose experienced "mild" complications near his ear drains, which flush out fluid near the surgical site to accelerate healing, states the Cleveland Clinic. Without care, this can cause a hematoma, which is pooling of blood within the body. Aside from that, recuperation for the pair went smoothly. The only thing that they wish they would've taken into further consideration was how they were going to help each other physically recover without extra hands at home. "You have to be very careful on doing everything. We were both recovering and couldn't really help each other that much," reveals Jose. But "emotionally, it's the greatest thing ever because we're both feeling the same pain and the same ups and downs that you go through for those first two weeks [after surgery]," he adds. They kept track of each other's antibiotic intakes and performed lymphatic drainage massages on one another. The time spent together looked a little different from their usual outings, but nonetheless, "I really enjoyed that time with him," says Sonia. is now available in the Apple App Store! After a few days, the couple were finally ready to unveil their transformations, which might seem nerve-wracking. What happens if the person you've known for your whole life suddenly looks different? Thankfully, they each had wonderful things to say about the other's results. "I was amazed," Jose says of his wife. "His neck looked really nice. Very snatched," adds Sonia. Before their transformations, the two were confident in themselves. Now, though, they live life with more vigor. "Refreshed and rejuvenated," Sonia and Jose look like how they feel — and that is a young couple at heart. "We wanted to look happy, alive, not tired and the procedures helped us with that]." Further plastic surgery will have to be "played by ear" they say, and for now, they'll enjoy their routine of going out for sushi every Tuesday and socializing with their friends. Sonia and Jose were the first couple Dr. Truesdale has worked on, and he tells PEOPLE that the experience was "truly something special." "They're the definition of 'couple goals.' I always like to say, a couple that facelifts together stays together. They really embody mutual support, and I knew I had to deliver an exceptional result for them," he says. "Twice the love, twice the number of happy patients." Read the original article on People
