Manchester United make first bid worth up to £55m for Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo

Manchester United have submitted an opening offer to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. The proposal values Mbeumo at £45million plus £10m in add-ons, which is some way below the kind of fee it would take for Brentford to consider selling their Cameroon international forward. But talks are ongoing as United work to reach an agreement for a player targeted by head coach Ruben Amorim to strengthen his attacking unit. Advertisement Mbeumo, 25, has a year left on his contract at the Gtech Community Stadium — plus an option to extend by 12 months — but is keen on moving to Old Trafford if the clubs can strike a compromise. The Athletic previously reported that the 25-year-old wanted to join United and that the Old Trafford club were set to open talks with Brentford as they pursue an agreement to sign the forward this summer. He enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2024-25, scoring 20 goals and adding eight assists as Brentford finished 10th. Thomas Frank has been open that the club would be open to selling Mbeumo, but only if their valuation is met. 'If the right price — and that's going to be expensive — is coming, then I'm sure the club will be open to it,' Frank told Sky Sports last month. A versatile attacking player, Mbeumo is comfortable playing both out wide or through the middle. He has made 242 appearances for Brentford since joining from French side Troyes in 2019. He has scored 70 goals and provided 51 assists in that time. He also has been capped 18 times by Cameroon and he has scored four goals. Manchester United are in the market for attacking reinforcements this summer after registering just 44 league goals last term, second-worst outside of teams who were relegated. Matheus Cunha will arrive from Wolverhampton Wanderers while they held a strong interest in Ipswich Town's Liam Delap, before he ultimately opted to join Chelsea. ()

Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo wants to join Manchester United, clubs set to open talks

Bryan Mbeumo has decided he wants to join Manchester United, and the Old Trafford club is set to open talks with Brentford as they pursue an agreement to sign the forward this summer. Mbeumo, 25, has a year left on his contract at the Gtech Community Stadium and it includes an option for Brentford to extend by 12 months. Advertisement Last season was the Cameroon international's most productive since joining from Troyes in 2019, contributing 20 goals and eight assists. It has attracted interest from the likes of Arsenal, Newcastle United, and Tottenham Hotspur — but Mbeumo favours a switch to Manchester United, if they can strike a deal with Brentford. Brentford head coach Thomas Frank admitted in May that the club would be 'open' to selling this summer if an appropriate offer arrived. 'If the right price — and that's going to be expensive — is coming, then I'm sure the club will be open to it,' Frank told Sky Sports. A versatile forward capable of playing out wide or through the middle, Mbeumo is the latest in a long line of recruitment success stories for Brentford since he joined from French side Troyes in 2019. He helped Brentford to promotion via the Championship playoffs in his second season with the club before comfortably making the step up to the top flight. He scored eight, nine and nine goals respectively in Brentford's first three Premier League seasons before his breakout 2024/25 campaign. Mbeumo has 18 caps at international level for Cameroon, scoring four goals. ()

Caoimhin Kelleher can be one of Premier League's best keepers – Jake O'Brien

Jake O'Brien has backed Republic of Ireland team-mate Caoimhin Kelleher to establish himself as one of the best keepers in the Premier League as he closes in on a move from Liverpool to Brentford. The 26-year-old was conspicuous by his absence from training with the Ireland squad on Monday morning having travelled to London with a view to tying up a move to the Gtech Community Stadium which could eventually cost the Bees £18million. Kelleher, who picked up a league winners' medal with the Reds this season, has made no secret of his desire for regular first-team football and with Mark Flekken seemingly heading for Bayer Leverkusen, looks sets to be granted his wish by Thomas Frank. Everton defender O'Brien, who will hope to play alongside his fellow Cork man in Friday's friendly clash with Senegal in Dublin, told a press conference: 'It doesn't take for me to say how good he is. I think everyone knows how good he is and what he's achieved over the last couple of years. 'If it goes through, it's a great move for him, to become a number one in the Premier League. 'It's a great move for him, to go and play every week is very important and he's more than good enough. Brentford have done well this season so it's a club he can progress and do a lot at. 'I think everyone knows how good he is and how high his ceiling is. He can push on and do great things.' Kelleher, who also has two Carabao Cup wins to his name, made 20 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool during the season which has just finished but had to play second fiddle to Brazilian Alisson Becker once again. He has been open in the recent past while on international duty about his need to play every week and, having made the Ireland jersey his own in the midst of Gavin Bazunu's injury problems, seems ready now to set out on a new path. O'Brien said: 'It's a difficult one because he is number two at Liverpool, but he's obviously got a really good keeper ahead of him. 'He's definitely up there with the best keepers in the Premier League and I think next year he'll show that he's up there with the best. 'I think he's proven in the games he has played for Liverpool that he can be up there with some of the best keepers in the league.' Although O'Brien and Kelleher live close to each other on Merseyside, they are separated by the city's football divide and the Blues defender, who joined the Toffees from Lyon last summer, admits he does not see a lot of his compatriot outside of their international commitments. He said: 'I think that's just because in football, you've other things going on. 'He lives in the same area as me. I suppose it would be difficult if we were seen together as Merseyside rivals, some fans wouldn't take it well.'

Brentford confirm Ben Mee departure this Summer

Defender is set to depart when his contract comes to an end on 30 June. Since arriving on a free transfer in July 2022, Mee has featured in 67 matches and found the net five times for the Bees. In an interview with the club's media team, Mee said: 'Sunday will be my last game at the Gtech. 'I'd like to thank the Bees fans for the amazing support you've given me during these last three years - it's really meant a lot. 'This is a unique club full of fantastic people and I'm really proud and grateful to have had the pleasure to play here. 'I still have a lot more to give on the pitch and I'll certainly be looking to do that somewhere next season and beyond. 'For now, let's hope we can have a strong finish to the season.' The announcement came on Sunday morning, shortly before Brentford's match against local rivals Fulham at the Gtech Community Stadium. Thomas Frank's side are having what could be a historically good season, where they are currently eighth in the Premier League. Thomas Frank's team is enjoying what might turn out to be one of their best seasons ever, currently sitting eighth in the Premier League standings. After three wonderful years in west London, Ben Mee will leave Brentford once his contract expires next month ???? We wish you every success in the future, Ben ???? — Brentford FC (@BrentfordFC) May 18, 2025
