Reuters Ukrainian strikes in Russia's Kursk region killed the deputy chief of the Russian Navy, Mikhail Gudkov, authorities in the Primorsky region in Russia's far east have confirmed. This is one of the high-profile deaths in Russia's leadership as a result of Ukrainian strikes since the start of the war. Gudkov, 42, was the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy who led a brigade that fought in Ukraine. He was killed in the Russian border region on Thursday. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'During combat operations in one of the border areas of the Kursk region on July 2, 2025… Major General Mikhail Evgenievich Gudkov was killed,' Russia's state RIA news agency quoted the defence ministry as saying. Oleg Kozhemyako, head of the Primorye region in Russia's Far East, said Gudkov 'was killed carrying out his duty as an officer'. Kozhemyako said he had spoken to Gudkov 'a lot' over the years, praising him as a 'strong-spirited fighter'. He said Gudkov was a former commander of the 155th Guards Naval Infantry Brigade of the Pacific Fleet based in the Russian Far East. The governor said that, even after becoming deputy commander of the Russian navy, Gudkov 'did not stop going out in person to the positions of our marines'. The deputy chief was appointed to the post in March last year by President Vladimir Putin, who said at the time, 'Since the minister and the Chief of the General Staff believe that your experience needs to be replicated in other units, I have decided to transfer you to a position - to increase your level of responsibility.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military had accused Gudkov and other members of his former 155th brigade of committing war crimes in the country, including killing civilians in the towns of Bucha, Irpin and Gostomel. Ukrainian forces captured large parts of Kursk in a surprise offensive last year – a response to Russia's full-scale campaign against their country, which began in 2022. Russia in April said it had fully recaptured the territory, but clashes in the border region have continued. With inputs from agencies

Russian navy Maj. Gen. Mikhail Gudkov killed near Ukraine border

July 3 (UPI) -- The Russian military confirmed today that the leader of the Russian navy was killed near the Ukrainian border. Major General Mikhail Gudkov, deputy head of the Russian military, was killed in an operation near the border. Russian defense ministry said the operation in the western Kursk region was "combat work." It gave no further details. The region borders Ukraine's Sumy region. It's one of the most high-profile losses by Russia since it invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Russian President Vladimir Putin appointed Gudkov to his post in March. Oleg Kozhemyako, governor of the Primorsky region, announced the death on Telegram. He said 10 others also were killed. Kozhemyako described Gudkov as loyal and said he died "carrying out his duty." Four or more missiles may have struck the base, and several senior officers were killed in the attack. The base was near the village of Korenevo, about 19 miles from the front. Gudkov had led the 155th Marine Brigade, a unit on the front line that was often replenished because so many in the unit have been killed. The unit has been accused of war crimes by Kyiv, including the execution of nine Ukrainian prisoners of war last summer and possibly two other POWs. The unit took part in the attempt to take Kyiv, which failed. In 2023, it was in Vuhledar, where it was accused of more war crimes. It then redeployed to Kursk when the Ukraine military moved into the Russian region. So far, at least 10 Russian major generals or lieutenant generals have been killed in the war. On June 29, Ukrainian F-16 pilot Lt. Colonel Maksym Ustymenko, 31, was killed when his fighter jet was damaged trying to intercept Russian missiles and drones. Copyright 2025 UPI News Corporation. Photo: Russian Defence Ministry A high-ranking Russian Navy general has been killed in action near the Ukrainian border in Russia's southwestern Kursk region, according to several official sources, including Primorsky region Governor Oleg Kozhemyako and the Russian Defence Ministry. According to Kozhemyako, Major General Mikhail Gudkov, the deputy commander-in-chief of the Russian Navy, died 'performing the duty of an officer together with his fellow soldiers' on Wednesday while visiting Russian marines under his command. The acting governor of the Kursk region, Alexander Khinshtein, confirmed Gudkov's death, describing it as a tragic loss 'in the line of military duty', while thanking Gudkov for his role in orchestrating the region's recapture from Ukrainian control in March. According to several independent Telegram channels, Gudkov was killed by a Ukrainian missile strike targeting the command post of the 155th Marine Brigade, his old unit, in Korenevo, a village approximately 30 kilometres from the border of Ukraine. Local Telegram channel Pepel Kursk reported that 12 soldiers, including Gudkov, were killed in the attack, which targeted a private residence where the brigade's command post had been set up. Gudkov was appointed deputy commander-in-chief of the Russian Navy in March. Before that, he was commander of the 155th Marine Brigade, a unit of Russia's Pacific Fleet known for sustaining some of the heaviest casualties of the entire war with Ukraine while fighting around Kyiv and Mariupol. Ukrainian military intelligence says the brigade was previously involved in the killings of civilians in Bucha, Irpin and Hostomel in the Kyiv region, and in the executions of prisoners of war. In August 2024, the military brigade published a video that featured the head of a Ukrainian soldier impaled on a stake. According to calculations by independent news outlet Mediazona, Gudkov's death means that 12 Russian generals have now been killed by Ukraine since February 2022.
