Mass. PR firm recommends clients scale back or phase out use of X/Twitter

One big reason for the decline: In early 2023, Twitter announced it would no longer grant users free access to its Application Programming Interface platform, making it much more difficult to use, particularly with other digital tools. Advertisement 'People are not engaging in the way they used to,' said Guilfoil, whose firm specializes in public safety and municipal work. 'The majority haven't had an interaction with a member of the public in over a month. We would have been measuring that in a matter of minutes or hours with a client five years ago.' Unfortunately, another platform has not risen to replace it, he said. Upstarts such as Mastodon and Bluesky simply don't have the critical mass. He still recommends that clients use Facebook to get their messages out, and LinkedIn is helpful because it's usually not blocked by workplace firewalls. Guilfoil said the survey has been accused of being part of a left-wing conspiracy, after the results became public. But he said he simply wants to be an effective communications rep for his clients. Perhaps Twitter, which Musk acquired in 2022 and later renamed as X, is ultimately heading the way of Friendster. 'History tells us,' Guilfoil says, 'that every one of these internet services will eventually disappear and die.'
