Error message in Chinese on metro display sparks hacking scare
Ahmedabad: Panic briefly spread among commuters on the East-West corridor of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail on Thursday afternoon after a public display screen at the Rabari Colony station showed an error message with Chinese characters and the announcement system abruptly shut down. However, the metro rail services were not disrupted, and operations continued without delay. The unusual combination of a "404 error" along with Chinese script led several passengers to suspect that the metro system had been hacked. However, officials from the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) denied any security breach and attributed the incident to a technical glitch. "There was a temporary fault in the public information display system, which uses Chinese hardware. Simultaneously, the announcement system failed due to a separate technical issue," an official said. GMRC clarified that the two incidents were unrelated. The display error may have been triggered by physical interference, such as someone accidentally disturbing the connecting wire, while the announcement system's failure was being treated as an isolated technical fault. "There is no evidence of hacking or any external breach," the officials assured.

GMRC mulls cams, guards after cable theft
Ahmedabad: Metro power cable theft that disrupted services on Thursday has spurred the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) into having CCTV cameras and security guards on the Shahpur side of the line. Services between Apparel Park and Old High Court were suspended for nearly seven hours after a thief stole 500m of electrical cables near Shahpur station, leading to a power outage. The disruption began when the first train from Vastral to Thaltej Gam passed Shahpur station, and staff reported power outage. The train's momentum carried it past the affected area to safety before the services were suspended. Twenty cables, each 25m long and costing about Rs 9 lakh were stolen. After this incident, authorities plan to install CCTV cameras and deploy security guards in areas where the underground metro ends. Authorities said that two vulnerable points are one near the Apparel Park in Maninagar, while the other is Shahpur area, where the train emerges from the underground route. "However, the area in Apparel Park is land owned by govt authorities and has round-the-clock security. Hence, we are actively thinking of installing CCTV cameras with lights or deploying guards in the area so that there is no repeat of Thursday's incident," said senior officials. As an immediate measure, GMRC is now planning to deploy a security guard until a final decision on CCTV cams is taken. Officials said that police and GMRC are trying to find out the persons behind the theft, adding that those involved may have had technical knowledge since the cables were stolen at small intervals. Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro to touch down at airport, extend into GIFT City
Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro will soon offer smoother rides across the twin cities, with fresh plans to link the airport and GIFT City . The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation has finalized detailed project reports (DPRs) and is awaiting green lights from the Union govt. Passengers can expect easier access, although multiple train changes will be needed to reach the airport. New tenders have also been issued for further metro extensions. The airport extension will connect the north-south corridor at Koteshwar, bringing a major boost for travellers. You Can Also Check: Ahmedabad AQI | Weather in Ahmedabad | Bank Holidays in Ahmedabad | Public Holidays in Ahmedabad Officials from Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) said that the DPRs for both the airport link and the internal extension at GIFT City have been approved at the state level and are now awaiting the Centre's nod. The metro extension inside GIFT City will cover around 7km and is expected to cost about Rs 2,300 crore. It will be linked to the current GNLU-GIFT City metro line. As for the airport route, officials explained that the line will branch off from the Motera-Gandhinagar corridor near Koteshwar, offering a fast-track connection to the airport. However, it won't be a seamless ride for all passengers. Those travelling from GIFT City will have to change trains three times, while passengers from Thaltej and Vastral will have to change twice. Meanwhile, GMRC has floated tenders to prepare a feasibility report for extending the current Vastral-Thaltej line, aiming to add more links and improve metro access across the city. This model is inspired by the Delhi Metro's success in enhancing urban transit. The officials stated that the extension will mainly focus on catering to the needs of the Olympics. The main extension from Thaltej Gam would move towards SP Ring Road and likely stretch up to Manipur. The plan is to run metro lines parallel to the existing Ahmedabad-Viramgam railway track to minimize land acquisition issues — a strategy already adopted for the north-south corridor near Ashram Road. They also revealed plans for a 2–3 km connector linking the main metro corridors for smoother transfers. Future connectivity may reach areas like Sanand, Bhadaj and Vaishnodevi Circle. Officials said tenders for the feasibility report are already out, and once that study is completed, a final DPR will be drawn up, detailing routes and alignments.
