Mississippi State breaks ground on seafood testing facility

JACKSON COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Mississippi State University (MSU) officially broke ground on Monday on the Northern Gulf Aquatic Food Research Center. The facility will be dedicated to aquatic food safety, quality assessment, processing and product development. The ceremony, hosted by the Jackson County Economic Development Foundation (JCEDF), recognized more than five years of collaborative work with MSU on the multimillion-dollar facility. MSU's Ballew Hall opens, showcasing dedication to agriculture Construction of the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station (MAFES) research center is a combined investment of $3 million from the federal RESTORE Act and $865,000 from the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act, or GOMESA, as well as $4 million from the state to cover fixed equipment including walk-in coolers and freezers and fume hoods for the laboratory. 'Mississippi State University is uniquely charged with serving the entire state of Mississippi, and we are very proud of the work we are doing on the Coast,' MSU President Mark E. Keenum said. 'We are grateful for the investments and the outstanding partners who have made the Northern Gulf Aquatic Food Research Center possible. It's a great example of what we can accomplish by working together to sustain and grow economic opportunities in our state and nation while being good stewards of our abundant natural resources.' Officials said the new research center will help Mississippi meet a critical need for one of its largest industries. It also will help the state's catfish producers, who manage 29,900 freshwater pond acres, with a total production value of $214 million in 2024. MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) — Cedar Point Pier in Dauphin Island will soon be temporarily closed for construction, according to a news release. Mobile Mardi Gras 2025: Parade Schedule The park will be closed to the public starting Wednesday, March 7 and is expected to be closed for four months. has learned that the renovations will improve the park's accessibility and resiliency. These improvements include: ADA-compliant pier access Access ramp from parking area New canopy covered deck between bathroom trailers and office New walkway from the existing pier to the new deck Utility upgrades New concrete parking pads Causeway driveway turnouts Improved shoreline deterioration protection for increased resiliency The construction is expected to last about four months and will reopen upon completion. The roughly $1 million construction contract was awarded to Gillis Construction by the Mobile County Commission on February 10; Moffat & Nichol are the engineering and construction management. Billy Goat Hole Boat Ramp to temporarily close: ADCNR

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) — Billy Goat Hole Boat Ramp will be temporarily closing for 'additional renovations' starting Sunday, Feb. 23, according to the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Fundraiser benefitting law enforcement, veterans happening at USS Alabama Saturday According to officials with the ADCNR Marine Patrol Division, the renovations began at the ramp with a parking lot update in 2023. During this round of renovations, the boat ramp and docks will be replaced and will be installed 30 feet farther from Bienville Boulevard, according to the ADCNR release. Part of the new decks will be completed with material that will make them certified by the Americans with Disabilities Act. An ADA-compliant lift and new wheelchair ramp, which are expected to improve access to the restrooms and concession areas, will be part of the renovations. 'This facility is an important asset to local boaters and anglers on Dauphin Island and to those who come here to enjoy Alabama's coastal waters,' said ADCNR Commissioner Chris Blankenship. 'This is the most used boat ramp in Coastal Alabama.' The construction is expected to be completed within four months. 'The Billy Goat Hole Boat Ramp renovation is a joint project between MRD and the Town of Dauphin Island,' read the release. The funds for the project are being provided through the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act.
