Man stabbed near Drop-In Centre in downtown Calgary dies

The victim of a July 24 stabbing incident near the Drop-In Centre in downtown Calgary has died. Calgary police responded that night at around 8:40 p.m. to reports of a stabbing and robbery on the 0-100 block of Dermont Baldwin Way S.E. Arriving officers transported a man suffering from what appeared to be stab wounds to hospital in life-threatening condition. On Wednesday, the man died from his wounds. Following an autopsy on Thursday, the man was identified as 37-year-old Gurdeep Singh Mundi. The night of the stabbing, officers on horseback, already out on patrol, found two suspects nearby—one of whom had also been stabbed, albeit in an incident several days prior. The pair were arrested, and the one with the days-old stab wounds was also taken for medical attention. Neil Henderson, 36, was charged with aggravated assault, robbery and failure to comply with undertaking. Donovan Collins, 34, was charged with aggravated assault, robbery and failing to comply with a probation order. The victim of a July stabbing in Calgary's downtown has died from his injuries, according to police. In a Thursday update to the July 24 stabbing near the Drop-in Centre, the Calgary Police Service said an autopsy completed Thursday by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has identified the victim as 37-year-old Gurdeep Singh Mundi. Mundi had died from his injuries Wednesday, CPS said. The police agency is now asking anyone who may have witnessed the stabbing or who may have CCTV or dashcam footage from the southeast corner of Riverfront Avenue S.E. and 4th Street S.E. between 8:30 and 9 p.m. on July 24 to contact police by calling 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-8477, visiting or by using the P3 Tips app. The stabbing occurred around 8:40 p.m. Officers were dispatched to the 0-100 block of Dermot Baldwin Way S.E. for reports of a stabbing and robbery. 'Upon arrival, officers located a man suffering from what appeared to be stab wounds,' a previous news release stated, adding the victim was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition. Immediately following the incident, members of the Mounted Patrol Team who were already patrolling the area located and arrested two suspects nearby, CPS said. One of those two suspects also had stab wounds and was transported to hospital as a precaution. However, CPS said it was later determined the person's injuries were related to a previous incident that occurred several days earlier. Neil Henderson, 36, is charged with one count of aggravated assault, robbery and failure to comply with undertaking. Donovan Collins, 34, is charged with one count each of aggravated assault, robbery and failing to comply with a probation order. They were both remanded in custody and appeared in court on July 28. The CPS update did not specify if Henderson or Collins will face elevated charges.
