Golden Temple threat email: Suspect detained from Faridabad

Amritsar, July 18 (UNI) Acting on a recent series of threat emails targeting the Golden Temple, Amritsar Police have intensified security arrangements around the revered Sikh shrine. Enhanced deployments, in coordination with the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), have been made both within and around the complex, with DCP-level officers monitoring the situation on the ground. Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, in a press briefing, confirmed that cyber investigations are underway in collaboration with state cyber crime units and central agencies. The probe has also extended to multiple states, including Tamil Nadu, where similar emails were reportedly received. Authorities are currently exploring potential connections with fringe political elements from the region. As part of the investigation, a man identified as Subham Dubey was detained from Faridabad. Police say he is a graduate who has worked with various firms. His electronic devices, including a laptop and phone, have been seized for forensic examination. However, officials clarified that he has not been formally charged and is being questioned based on technical leads. Commissioner Bhullar further stated that VPNs and advanced technology were used to mask the origin of the emails, indicating a deliberate attempt to mislead investigators. Despite the challenges, police remain confident about a breakthrough soon. The police reassured devotees that there is no cause for panic and that all security protocols are being implemented respectfully, in line with religious decorum. Authorities have contacted cybersecurity experts and international service providers to trace digital footprints. While the investigation is still ongoing, officials stressed that significant progress has been made. 'With Guru Maharaj's blessings, all devotees are safe. We are hopeful of achieving a full breakthrough very soon,' said Bhullar. UNI NB AAB

Golden Temple threat mails: Techie detained; devices seized for probe

Amritsar: A software engineer, , from Faridabad has been detained on Friday by Amritsar Police for allegedly sending bomb threat emails to the SGPC, as the Golden Temple received a sixth such message that afternoon. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar informed that police made "partial progress" in the investigation into the threat emails sent to the SGPC, following the detention of the software engineer identified as Shubham Dubey. He said the breakthrough came with the help of various agencies, including the State Cyber Police. Dubey, who holds a BTech degree, was rounded up , and his electronic devices—including a laptop and mobile phones—were seized for forensic examination. Commissioner said that the preliminary investigations suggest that the content of these emails mostly mentions about the Southern states, and discusses the politically sensitive topics related to Tamil Nadu, its political parties, and some incidents, and these were tagged to different peoples and also to Sri Darbar Sahib. Based on digital traces and email reading patterns, it appears the sender wanted to create a hype and gain attention quickly, he said . The names mentioned in the emails mostly belong to Indian citizens, and the intention appears to seek their attention. The emails were also sent to Amritsar Member of Parliament Gurjit Singh and to the office of Chief Minister of Punjab. When asked about the delay in tracing the potential sender, he said that the cyberspace is a fast-evolving domain with multiple layers of technology and many foreign-based companies and platforms host and transmit the content and these platforms are often hosted or leased by global tech giants like Microsoft and others, making timely responses from them difficult. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now However, he said that police have already registered two FIRs based on the emails received. He reiterarted that digital footprints and email patterns indicate the sender's intention was to draw immediate public and media attention. Notably, the SGPC received five threat emails in total—one each on July 14 and 15, and three more on July 16—warning of explosive attacks on the Golden Temple. According to sources, one more threat e-mail is received by the SGPC office on Friday afternoon , the details of which are yet awaited. Regarding the security of the Golden Temple, Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar assured that foolproof arrangements have been made to ensure the safety of devotees and prevent any panic among the sangat (congregation). He said that security measures in and around the Golden Temple have been strengthened in close coordination with the SGPC which has also deployed its own task force. A Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP)-rank officer has been appointed to oversee the security operations. As part of the enhanced security protocol, Punjab Police's Bomb Disposal Squad has been stationed at the site, along with teams from the Special Operations Group (SOG), the SWAT unit, and anti-riot squads as precautionary 'I want to assure all devotees that a thorough investigation is underway and there is no cause for alarm. The police are fully alert and comprehensive security arrangements are in place, all while upholding the sanctity and maryada (religious code of conduct) of the shrine, in full cooperation with the SGPC,' said Bhullar.

3 threats for Golden Temple on 3rd day; SGPC chief to cops: ‘Wake up'

Amritsar: The committee that manages the Golden Temple on Wednesday received three fresh threat emails warning of an attack at the iconic Sikh shrine, taking the number of such messages to five within just 36 hours and sparking demands for quicker action. The latest threats came even as police were yet to trace the origin of the first email that was sent on Monday. Amritsar police commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said they had obtained some IP addresses, and the content of the emails suggested they had been sent from a south Indian state. "We are ensuring security and there is no need to worry," he added. Bhullar's assurances, however, did not calm down Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami, who asked the police and state govt to "wake up". "We informed the police immediately after receiving the first email, but there has been no concrete response. If such threats don't alarm the govt, what will?" he said. Dhami criticised the silence of Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and Amritsar MP Gurjit Singh Aujla, saying they too had gotten the emails. Citing the deployment of Border Security Force (BSF) personnel around Golden Temple, Dhami called it a deliberate attempt to create fear and reduce the number of people visiting the shrine. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Lợi ích khi giao dịch CFD Bitcoin IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo "It seems like an orchestrated effort to terrorise the sangat (community). If not, then why hasn't the source of the emails been traced yet? Any govt with basic cyber capabilities can trace an IP in an hour," he added. Dhami said they had activated their own cyber teams, but the responsibility lied with the state. "Culprits must be exposed without delay," he added. Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal, Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar and Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring have expressed concern over the threat emails. Badal urged both Punjab and central govts to conduct a thorough investigation into the emails to apprehend the culprits, while Jakhar termed the threats a "symbol of the Punjab govt's failure".

Cross-border narco-hawala network linked to Pak busted in Amritsar

Amritsar: Amritsar Commissionerate Police claimed to have dismantled a cross-border narco-hawala network with links to Pakistan. The cops have nabbed five persons and recovered a cache of illegal weapons, drugs, and hawala money from their possession. Commissioner of police, Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, informed on Wednesday that police recovered five pistols, including two PX5 9mm, two Glock 9mm, and one .32 bore, along with two live cartridges, 50 grams of heroin, a drone suspected to have been used for cross-border smuggling, and Rs 6.90 lakh in hawala cash. Those arrested have been identified as Gurvinder Singh alias Dolu (25), a plumber from Chheharta, Amritsar, with seven previous cases involving the Arms Act, attempt to murder, and robbery; Jagjit Singh alias Jaggi (40), a shop worker from New Delhi with no previous record; Arshdeep Singh alias Baba (20), a granthi from Gharinda, whose mother and brother were earlier arrested with 2 kg of heroin, Rs 30,000 in drug money, and 10 pistols; Karanjeet Singh alias Karan (21), a labourer from rural Amritsar with no criminal background; and Harpal Singh alias Bhala (25), a painter from Tarn Taran, also with no prior record. Bhullar said the investigations revealed that the gang was using drones to smuggle heroin and firearms from Pakistan into Indian territory. Jagjit Singh, who fled Afghanistan in 2014 following the rise of the Taliban, developed ties with a Pakistani national named Pathan, who now operates a dry fruit business in Pakistan believed to be a front for narcotics operations. Acting on instructions from Pakistani smugglers Shah and Shehzad Jatt, Jagjit facilitated hawala transactions in the Amritsar region, receiving a 2% commission on the money he helped move. A case has been registered at Chheharta police station under the NDPS Act and Arms Act.
