Hat-trick by Gursahibjit for RSPB
CHENNAI: Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) continued their dominant run in 96th All-India MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup hockey tournament with a 5-2 victory over SAI NCOE, Bhopal in a thrilling Pool A match held at Chennai on Thursday. Gursahibjit Singh was the standout performer for RSPB, bagging a hat-trick with goals in the 7th (penalty corner), 28th and 59th minutes (both field goals). Supporting him, Darshan Gawkar added to the tally in the 21st minute with a field goal, while Shivam Anand struck another in the 26th minute. Despite trailing 4-0 at one point, NCOE fought back with grit in the third quarter. Mohit Karma opened the scoring for NCOE with a field goal in the 32nd minute, followed by Munish Malik who added another in the 37th minute. In a desperate attempt to close the gap late in the match, NCOE substituted their goalkeeper for an additional field player in the last quarter. The move, however, proved counter-productive as RSPB capitalized and extended their lead. In the second match of the day, Indian Navy (INN) registered a 3-2 win over Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOC). IOC took the lead early in the second half through Raghunath V R, who converted a penalty corner in the 45th minute. The advantage, however, was short-lived as Indian Navy mounted a rapid response. Selvaraj K was the standout performer today, scoring twice for the Indian Navy, first in the 49th minute from a penalty corner and again with a well-taken field goal in the 55th minute. In between, Ashish Topno scored a field goal in the 54th minute, capping a remarkable 3-1 lead. In the last minute, IOC narrowed the deficit through Gurjinder Singh, who scored from a penalty corner in the 60th, but Navy held on to secure the win. With this victory over IOC, Indian Navy held on to their 1st position in Pool B. Railways shuts out SAI-NCOE (Bhopal); Navy outwits IOC
Defending champion Indian Railways and Indian Navy scripted an all-win record in their respective pools with impressive victories as the league matches in the MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup invitation hockey tournament came to an end at the SDAT-Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here on Thursday. Railways scored a comfortable 5-2 victory over SAI-NCOE (Bhopal) in a Pool-A match, while Navy shocked former champion IOC 3-2 in an exciting Pool-B tie. Undoubtedly, Navy has been the standout team in the tournament. The young team has shown remarkable ability to outpace its opponent in every match. With some outstanding players such as strikers K. Selvaraj and Ajinkya Jadhav and midfielder Navin Kerketta, Navy has set an example for others to follow for the right mix of defence and offence. Hitting back After a goalless first two quarters, IOC opened the account towards the end of the third when Olympian V.R. Raghunath converted a penalty corner. Then, in a matter of six minutes, Navy showcased its attacking might by scoring three goals from which the former champion never recovered. K. Selvaraj was the star of the match as he scored a brace. First, he scored by deflecting a shot from a penalty corner taken by Sanjit Toppo and then netted a rebound from the 'keeper Pankaj Rajak. Requiring a victory to make it to the playoffs, NCOE never really showed the stomach for a win as Railways literally closed out the match in the first two quarters by slotting in four goals. Former International Gursahibjit Singh was again the torchbearer for his team with a hat-trick. Friday is a rest day. The results: Pool-A: Indian Railways 5 (Gursahibjit Singh 7, 28 & 59, Darshan Gawkar 21, Shivam Anand 26) bt NCOE Bhopal 2 (Mohit Karma 32, Munish Malik 37). Pool-B: Navy 3 (K. Selvaraj 49 & 55, Ashish Topno 54) bt IOC 2 (V. R. Raghunath 45, Gurjinder Singh 60). Points table (read as team, played, won, draw, loss, points):Pool-A: Railways, 4, 4, 0, 0, 12; Army, 4, 2, 0, 2, 6; HUTN, 4, 1, 2, 1, 5; SAI NCOE (Bhopal) 4, 1, 1, 2, 4; Maharashtra, 4, 0, 1, 3, 1. Underwhelming Railways downs Maharashtra
In terms of strategy, execution and aesthetics, the two Pool-A matches of the 96th-MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup hockey tournament at the SDAT-Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here on Monday failed to rise above the mundane and ordinary. First, defending champion Indian Railways thumped Maharashtra 4-2 to top the table with nine points from three matches, and then Indian Army edged out SAI-NCoE (Bhopal) 1-0 for its first win in three matches. For Army and NCOE, the tie was crucial as a win would have kept them in contention for the knock-outs. The teams were under pressure to deliver, and it showed in their desperation. Once Akshay Dubey converted off a penalty corner in the first minute, the cat and mouse game started. NCOE counter-attacked with all its might and had three back-to-back penalty corners in a matter of minutes in the first quarter, and almost scored in the third. Ankit Sharma's powerful shot was palmed away by Army 'keeper Senthamizh Arasu. Army, too, had its chances in a couple of penalty corners in the second but couldn't make use of them. The Railways team was a pale shadow of itself despite a comfortable victory over Maharashtra. The side missed aggression and harmony. The team lacked sting despite having seniors like Sheshe Gowda, Gursahibjit Singh and Simranjot Singh in the ranks. After a goalless first quarter, Railways slowly picked up momentum. The victor's second goal showed its quality. Gursahibjit Singh hoodwinked a defender and passed it to Shivam Anand, who in turn gave it to Darshan Gawkar, who deflected it home. The results: Pool-A: Indian Army 1 (Akshay Dubey 1) bt SAI-NCoE (Bhopal) 0; Indian Railways 4 (Gursahibjit Singh 18, Darshan Gawkar 53, Sheshe Gowda 56, P. Shanmugam 57) bt Maharashtra 2 (Ganesh Patil 32, Rohan Patil 57).
