1 2 Silchar : Gurucharan College — one of the oldest academic institutions in the Barak Valley — has officially been upgraded to university status. Professor Niranjan Roy, a senior faculty member of Assam University, Silchar, has been appointed as the first vice-chancellor of Gurucharan University. The announcement was made on Sunday by governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya in his capacity as Chancellor of state universities. Prof. Roy, an economist and experienced academician, will serve a three-year term as VC. E xpressing gratitude for the opportunity, he said the transformation of Gurucharan College into a full-fledged university was a "historic task" and pledged to carry forward its 90-year-old legacy. "I am very happy and, at the same time, deeply aware of the responsibility entrusted to me by the state government," Prof. Roy said. "I thank Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu for their faith in me. Gurucharan College has a glorious legacy, and its transition into a university marks a new chapter not just for Silchar but for the entire region." Highlighting the academic possibilities ahead, Prof. Roy said the geographical proximity of Gurucharan University and Assam University, both located in Silchar, could foster academic collaboration. "This is a rare opportunity for synergy between two major institutions in the same district," he noted, adding that success would depend on the "active and energetic cooperation" of faculty, staff, and students. The university is expected to begin its first academic session under the new structure later this year.
