A man charged with murder after a stabbing inside a city centre bank will provisionally stand trial in the New Year. Haybe Cabdiraxmaan Nur, 47, of Western Road, Derby, was charged with the murder of Gurvinder Johal, 37, who was stabbed inside Lloyds in St Peter's Street just after 14:30 BST on via video link at Derby Crown Court from HMP Nottingham, Mr Cabdiraxmaan Nur was told by Judge Shaun Smith KC through a Somali interpreter he will provisionally stand trial on 19 January application for bail was made. Judge Smith KC told Mr Cabdiraxmaan Nur on Friday: "In the meantime, you will be remanded into custody."The judge said the custody time limit would be extended from November until the end of January 2026 in order for reports to be submitted in sufficient time for any trial - which is expected to last "two to three weeks".The defendant was told he will appear at Derby Crown Court again on 15 Police said a second man in his 30s, who was arrested in connection with the incident, was released without any further action on Independent Office for Police Conduct confirmed it had received a referral from the force in relation to the case, but later said: "We have now notified the force that it did not meet the threshold for a referral and was therefore not valid."

London: A 37-year-old man stabbed to death while inside a bank branch in the eastern England city of Derby has been formally identified as Gurvinder Johal. A 47-year-old Somali-origin man was charged with his murder on Thursday. Derbyshire Constabulary officers were called to reports that a man had been stabbed in the Lloyd's bank branch on St. Peter's Street in Derby on Tuesday afternoon. The police said that Johal was pronounced dead at the scene and, following consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), Haybe Cabdiraxmaan Nur was charged with his murder. "Following a review of the evidence provided by Derbyshire Constabulary, we have authorised criminal charges in relation to the death of 37-year-old Gurvinder Johal," said Samanatha Shallow, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor in the East Midlands. "Mr Johal died after a stabbing inside Lloyd's bank in St Peter's Street, Derby, after 2.30 pm on Tuesday, 6 May. Haybe Nur Cabdiraxmaan, 47, from Normanton in Derby has been charged with his murder," she said. Nur appeared via videolink at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court on Thursday, when he addressed the court only to confirm his name and age through a Somali interpreter and was remanded in custody to appear before Derby Crown Court on Friday. A 47-year-old man has been remanded in custody charged with the murder of a bank customer in Derby city centre. Haybe Cabdiraxmaan Nur is charged with murdering Gurvinder Singh Johal, who died after a stabbing inside Lloyds bank in St Peter's Street on Tuesday. Nur spoke through a Somali interpreter, who attended the hearing at Derby Magistrates' Court via a video-link, to confirm his name and date of birth and to tell the judge hearing the case: 'I don't know where I live – somewhere there.' The defendant, who was arrested at an address in Western Road, Normanton, Derby, appeared in the dock dressed in grey jogging bottoms and a round-necked sweatshirt. Adjourning the case, District Judge Stephen Flint told Nur: 'I must send your case to Derby Crown Court. 'The next hearing will be on Friday the 9th of May. Tomorrow a Crown Court judge will decide what happens next in this case.' The judge also offered his condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr Johal. Mr Johal, who was 37, was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency services were alerted at around 2.35pm on Tuesday. A second man, in his 30s, who was arrested in connection with the incident, has been released with no further action, Derbyshire Constabulary said. Mr Johal was said to have been known to friends as Danny. In a tribute given to the Derby Telegraph on Wednesday, councillor Ajit Atwal, leader of the Lib Dem group on Derby City Council, who knew Mr Johal, said: 'He was a good businessman and nothing was ever too much trouble for him. He was humble, quiet and a kind guy and would always go above and beyond for everyone. 'His family are devastated and cannot understand what has happened.'
