Warhawks ambush Bears, ruin home opener

SPRINGFIELD, Mo–The Missouri State Bears were back on the home diamond at Hammons Field. And there was a wind of change at the ballyard Friday afternoon. For the first time in more than four decades Missouri State was coached by someone other then Keith Guttin. Guttin retired after last season, and former player and assistant Joey Hawkins is now in command. And the wind was blowing out as the Bears opened a series against Louisiana-Monroe. In our Bear Nation report, Hawkins' team was looking to snap a four game losing streak. But it was the Warhawks who jumped out in front, top of the first, Isaiah walker takes this deep to right, caught by Zack Stewart, but good enough to score Colby Lunsford on the sac fly, it's 1-0 Louisiana-Monroe. The Bears tie it up in the bottom half, Taeg Gollert gets this up in the jet stream, over the fence in center, up on the berm, a solo shot it's 1-1. The Valley's pitcher of the week, Michael Yusypchuk was on the hill, he gets Angelo Aleman swinging, Yusypchuk went six innings with nine strikeouts. Curry Sutherland would give the Bears the lead in the fourth, this goes deep to right, over the fence and gone, another solo shot it's 2-1 Missouri State. But the Warhawks tie it up again, this time it's Jackson Landry in the sixth, he takes this deep to left, into the bullpen, a solo shot, it's 2-2. MoState had a 6-2 lead in the ninth, but the Bears bullpen collapsed, giving up seven runs. And Louisiana-Monroe hands the Bears their fifth straight loss 9-8. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
