Warhawks ambush Bears, ruin home opener

Yahoo01-03-2025

SPRINGFIELD, Mo–The Missouri State Bears were back on the home diamond at Hammons Field.
And there was a wind of change at the ballyard Friday afternoon.
For the first time in more than four decades Missouri State was coached by someone other then Keith Guttin.
Guttin retired after last season, and former player and assistant Joey Hawkins is now in command.
And the wind was blowing out as the Bears opened a series against Louisiana-Monroe.
In our Bear Nation report, Hawkins' team was looking to snap a four game losing streak.
But it was the Warhawks who jumped out in front, top of the first, Isaiah walker takes this deep to right, caught by Zack Stewart, but good enough to score Colby Lunsford on the sac fly, it's 1-0 Louisiana-Monroe.
The Bears tie it up in the bottom half, Taeg Gollert gets this up in the jet stream, over the fence in center, up on the berm, a solo shot it's 1-1.
The Valley's pitcher of the week, Michael Yusypchuk was on the hill, he gets Angelo Aleman swinging, Yusypchuk went six innings with nine strikeouts.
Curry Sutherland would give the Bears the lead in the fourth, this goes deep to right, over the fence and gone, another solo shot it's 2-1 Missouri State.
But the Warhawks tie it up again, this time it's Jackson Landry in the sixth, he takes this deep to left, into the bullpen, a solo shot, it's 2-2.
MoState had a 6-2 lead in the ninth, but the Bears bullpen collapsed, giving up seven runs.
And Louisiana-Monroe hands the Bears their fifth straight loss 9-8.

Countdown to Kickoff: Vernon Broughton is the Saints Player of Day 91

The New Orleans Saints start their 2025 regular season 91 days from today against the Arizona Cardinals. Currently wearing No. 91 for the Saints is one of several newcomers to the team, rookie defensive lineman Vernon Broughton. As our Saints Player of the Day, it's time to take a closer look at the rookie defender. Name (age): Vernon Broughton II (23) Hometown: Houston, Texas Position: Defensive tackle Height, weight: 6-foot-5, 311 pounds College: Texas Longhorns Relative Athletic Score: N/A Drafted: Round 3, 71st overall in 2025 (New Orleans Saints) NFL experience: Rookie 2025 salary cap hit: $1,206,872 A four-star recruit out of Cypress Ridge High School in Texas, Broughton elected to stay in-state over recruiting pitches from other national powers. After playing in just two games in 2020 as a freshman, he was a regular part of the defensive line rotation until becoming a starter last season. In his last four years with the Longhorns, Broughton totaled 6.5 sacks and 13 tackles for loss among his 70 total stops. Advertisement New Orleans targeted Broughton with their first of two choices in Round 3, the seventh pick in the round. He was the fifth defensive tackle taken off the board in Day 2. Outside of Bryan Bresee, a first round pick in 2023, Broughton is the highest drafted interior defender by the Saints since Sheldon Rankins in 2016. Broughton has an explosive first step off the snap and good athleticism for his size. He'll need to get stronger and show more consistency against the run, but plays with good leverage against double-teams and shows good lateral movement down the line of scrimmage. Broughton's frame and athleticism gives him some versatility as both an interior lineman or a big end in 3-man fronts. New Orleans ranked 30th in overall defense and a putrid 31st against the run and yards per rush. It's clear that the Saints and new defensive coordinator Brandon Staley wanted to get more skilled up front. They picked Vernon Broughton midway through Day 2 of this year's draft to hopefully help them do exactly that. LSU's Flau'jae Johnson gets brutally honest on Angel Reese relationship: ‘We're not friends'

The post LSU's Flau'jae Johnson gets brutally honest on Angel Reese relationship: 'We're not friends' appeared first on ClutchPoints. Flau'jae Johnson recently acknowledged she no longer has a close relationship with former LSU women's basketball teammate Angel Reese, saying the two are 'not friends,' though she still supports Reese's success in the WNBA with the Chicago Sky. Advertisement 'We're not friends but that bond that we had and that thing we did together, win a national championship, you can never take that away from us,' Johnson said, as reported by Griffin McVeigh of On3. 'Sometimes, stuff happens. You wish it don't happen but it do. You just got to grow. I support her in everything she do, she's killing it in the WNBA. I'll be on social media clowning the folks trying to talk down on her. I'm just proud of her. But you know, stuff happens.' Johnson shared that behind-the-scenes tensions contributed to the distance. 'It was a lot of media, it was a lot of locker room stuff,' she said, as reported by Rashad Milligan of The Times-Picayune/ that goes on behind the scenes, but you know, it happens.' © Gregory Fisher-Imagn Images Reese, who was drafted No. 7 by the Chicago Sky in the 2024 WNBA Draft, echoed a similar sentiment back in September on her own podcast, saying, 'We aren't as close as we used to be. There are no hard feelings or anything… It happens.' Advertisement The two stars were central to the Tigers' first national championship in 2023 under LSU women's basketball coach Kim Mulkey , going on a media tour and appearing on the cover of SLAM Magazine together. Johnson now enters her senior year at LSU. Despite the shift in their relationship, Johnson continues to support her former teammate publicly and said she's proud of Reese's professional accomplishments. Johnson had a busy weekend of her own, releasing a new single, coaching at a youth basketball event, and attending the BET Awards, where she was nominated for Sportswoman of the Year — an award Reese ultimately won for a third straight year. 91 days until Saints season opener: Every player to wear No. 91

We've got 91 days left until the New Orleans Saints open up their 2025 season, which means it's time to continue our countdown with every player to wear No. 91 for the black and gold. The No. 91 jersey currently belongs to rookie defensive tackle Vernon Broughton, who the Saints drafted in Round 3 out of Texas this year. The late Will Smith accomplished more than anyone else to use No. 91, having retired with the fourth-most sacks in franchise history (67.5; his protege Cameron Jordan later surpassed him to claim the all-time Saints record). But he isn't the only great player to do the number proud. Trey Hendrickson was a bit of a late bloomer but he developed into one of the better pass rushers of his generation. Other names worth mentioning include Robert Goff and Brady Smith.
