Reports: Former LSU baseball head coach emerging as a candidate at ULM

Reports: Former LSU baseball head coach emerging as a candidate at ULM Former LSU baseball head coach Raymond "Smoke" Laval is reportedly showing interest in the same role at Louisiana-Monroe, which he held in the early 2000s. The veteran coach currently works for the East Coast Sox youth baseball program. Following his departure from LSU in 2006, Laval led North Florida for six seasons and was let go in 2017, his last head coaching role. Laval entered his first stint with the Tigers as an assistant in 1984, working under Skip Bertman and helping the team win national championships in 1991 and 1993. He left for his first head coaching job at Louisiana-Monroe for the 1994 season and led the program to three Southland Conference titles. Following Bertman's retirement, Laval returned to Baton Rouge as the legendary head coach's replacement. He guided the Tigers to a 210-109-1 record, an SEC title, and two College World Series appearances. Following a 35-24 season, he resigned. While none of the reports are confirmed, hearing Laval's name tossed around in the Louisiana baseball scene is nothing new. Laval had a tough exit from LSU after his disappointing final season, but following up Bertman was always going to be tough. Laval's successes with LSU shouldn't be overlooked. Given his history with two of the best college programs in the state, Laval's return would bring a new sense of nostalgia to both schools.

Commanders will host under-the-radar cornerback on top 30 visit

Commanders will host under-the-radar cornerback on top 30 visit CB Car'lin Vigers will have a top 30 visit with Washington this week per source. Interesting Day 3 possibility. Has length at 6-foot-2; did a nice job vs WR Matthew Golden when Louisiana-Monroe played Texas, from what I was able to watch. — John Keim (@john_keim) April 12, 2025 Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn is known to get the most out of cornerbacks. Multiple cornerbacks have improved in each of Quinn's coaching stops, reaching levels they'd previously never reached. In his first season with Washington, rookie cornerback Mike Sainristil was the breakout star. But the Commanders need another young cornerback after things didn't work out with former first-round pick Emmanuel Forbes. While Washington could select one at No. 29 overall in the 2025 NFL draft, the Commanders could look to later rounds to add more young depth to the position. After trading for Marshon Lattimore, the Commanders re-signed Noah Igbinoghene and signed Jonathan Jones in free agency to join Sainristil. So, Washington doesn't necessarily need a starting-level cornerback right now, but more of a developmental type. Enter Car'lin Vigers. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound cornerback prospect from Louisiana-Monroe began his career in JUCO before transferring to Louisiana-Monroe in 2022. According to John Keim of ESPN, he'll be in Ashburn on a top 30 visit. Vigers' size and length make him an intriguing prospect, especially if he lands somewhere on Day 3. Vigers got the attention of NFL scouts with a strong week at the Reese's Senior Bowl this year. Vigers' excellent Senior Bowl week helped him after some strong senior tape, particularly against SEC foes Texas and Auburn.

Warhawks ambush Bears, ruin home opener

SPRINGFIELD, Mo–The Missouri State Bears were back on the home diamond at Hammons Field. And there was a wind of change at the ballyard Friday afternoon. For the first time in more than four decades Missouri State was coached by someone other then Keith Guttin. Guttin retired after last season, and former player and assistant Joey Hawkins is now in command. And the wind was blowing out as the Bears opened a series against Louisiana-Monroe. In our Bear Nation report, Hawkins' team was looking to snap a four game losing streak. But it was the Warhawks who jumped out in front, top of the first, Isaiah walker takes this deep to right, caught by Zack Stewart, but good enough to score Colby Lunsford on the sac fly, it's 1-0 Louisiana-Monroe. The Bears tie it up in the bottom half, Taeg Gollert gets this up in the jet stream, over the fence in center, up on the berm, a solo shot it's 1-1. The Valley's pitcher of the week, Michael Yusypchuk was on the hill, he gets Angelo Aleman swinging, Yusypchuk went six innings with nine strikeouts. Curry Sutherland would give the Bears the lead in the fourth, this goes deep to right, over the fence and gone, another solo shot it's 2-1 Missouri State. But the Warhawks tie it up again, this time it's Jackson Landry in the sixth, he takes this deep to left, into the bullpen, a solo shot, it's 2-2. MoState had a 6-2 lead in the ninth, but the Bears bullpen collapsed, giving up seven runs. And Louisiana-Monroe hands the Bears their fifth straight loss 9-8. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
