Ms. Didi's Caribbean Kitchen opens Haitian restaurant in east Charlotte
Ms DiDi's Caribbean Kitchen, a popular Haitian food truck, opened its first brick-and-mortar in Windsor Park over the weekend with a line that wrapped around the building. Why it matters:"Opening this restaurant is about exposing more people to our culture, our country, our food, our flavors and our resilience," says co-owner Christina Kedlyn Bowman. "That's partly why we name our menu items after cities in Haiti so people can ask us questions." Background: Chef-owner Edith Jean-Francois opened Ms. DiDi's Food Truck with her daughter in 2019, and it quickly grew in popularity. They even made an appearance on The Food Network's "Guy's Grocery Games" last year. Now, their new restaurant is fully family-run and operated by Edith and her husband, Andre Jean-Francois, and their three children, Christina Kedlyn Bowman, Milana Carruth and David Jean-Francois. The vibe: Inside the 1,200 square foot space, which seats about 20 people, you'll notice the walls are painted in the colors of their country's flag and covered with Haitian art. "We want you to feel the country," Kedlyn Bowman tells Axios. "This spot gives corner store vibes. This is how we grew up," Carruth added. Dig in: Expect the traditional Haitian staples that they served on their food truck, like legume, island mac and cheese, chicken in sauce, djon djon (black mushroom rice) and griot (fried pork). Other signature dishes include Mama's Rice Bowl, Haitian loaded fries, and jumbo patties. Some drinks include passion fruit juice and Haitian lemonade. In the coming weeks, they'll add seasonal dishes like fritay (a combo platter of fried meats, plantains, and other items), boulet (meatballs), sos pwa (beans), and pwasòn gwo sèl (fish stew). Stop by: Find Ms. Didi's Caribbean Kitchen at 2120 Kilborne Dr. Open Wednesday through Saturday 11am-7pm, Sunday 1-6pm. Always closed on the first Sunday of every month. What's next: Ms. Didi's food truck will continue to operate for larger events, including the one they started with other businesses, Bon Fritay and Burger Divas, called the Carolina Haitian Food Festival.

Minneapolis pizza joint to feature on Friday's 'Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives'
Twin Cities pizza hub OG Zaza is the latest Minnesota eatery to get featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Over the summer, Guy Fieri was spotted around the Twin Cities as he filmed new episodes of his long-running Food Network show. Now, the fuss comes to fruition as OG Zaza and Chef Josh Hedquist (a three-time winner of Guy's Grocery Games) will surface in an episode that airs Friday, Feb. 7 at 8 p.m. CT. The pizza shop, which has three locations and a food truck in the Twin Cities, specializes in New Haven-style pizza with a dough that demands a multi-day fermentation. To celebrate the appearance, OG Zaza will host a pair of watch parties on Friday. One will take place in its location at King Coil Spirits in St. Paul. It'll offer half-off pizzas during the party and serve a specialty cocktail called Flavortown, which is fittingly a bacon fat washed old fashioned. The other watch party will take place at Headflyer Brewing, where the OG Zaza food truck is currently in residency. OG Zaza is one of six Twin Cities restaurants to appear on this season of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, including StepChld, Hai Hai, Union Hmong Kitchen, Guacaya Bistreaux, and Oro by Nixta.

Celebrity chef Tobias Dorzon focused on recovery after shooting in Maryland
The Brief Celebrity chef Tobias Dorzon is recovering after being shot in an attempted armed robbery in November. Dorzon and a woman were attacked by four suspects in Prince George's County and hospitalized for their injuries. He spoke about his recovery on LION Lunch Hour, saying the mental challenges have been tougher than the physical ones. Despite the attack, Dorzon remains focused on his culinary career and recently returned to the kitchen with his team. Celebrity chef Tobias Dorzon is sharing his journey to recovery after being shot during an attempted armed robbery in November. The backstory Dorzon, a well-known chef and owner of Huncho House in Hyattsville, was one of two victims shot in the 2500 block of Kirkwood Place on November 5, 2024. Police say four suspects attempted to rob Dorzon and a woman as they returned from dinner. Both were transported to the hospital for their injuries. In an interview on FOX 5's "LION Lunch Hour," Dorzon reflected on his recovery, saying the physical challenges have been tough, but the mental struggle has been even harder. "Just learning how to walk again," Dorzon said. "But, you know, just being an ex-athlete, it's easier to put the physical part together. It's the mental part — just being able to deal with the day-to-day and feel confident within yourself to get back out there and push to do what you love to do." Dorzon, who was recently named the 2024 Maryland Chef of the Year by the Restaurant Association of Maryland, has made several appearances on Chopped, Tournament of Champions, and Guy's Grocery Games. He currently hosts Time Out with Tobias on ESPN+ and Hulu. Despite the attack, he remains focused on his passion for cooking and giving back to the community. He described a recent moment of progress — standing alongside his team in the kitchen for the first time since the shooting. "Something just woke me up Saturday," Dorzon said. "I had enough strength to be able to stand with my team for about 30 minutes this past weekend. It was something that was fun. I felt like me being there with them helped the energy in the room." Prince George's County police have released descriptions of four suspects involved in the shooting. They are urging anyone with information to come forward.
