I-Day, Navroz and Janmashtami bring cheer to festive weekend

Mumbai/ Thane: A cluster of festive occasions will brighten the landscape Aug 15-16 as Independence Day, Parsi new year Navroz as well as Janmashtami unfold together.
Public buildings have been illuminated in orange and green LED lights to commemorate Independence Day.
Gyan Shah of The Flag Corp says they have sold 18 lakh small flags since the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign began.
Parsi New Year arrives a day earlier than usual. Ervad Pervez Karanjia, head priest of J D Amaria Sodawaterwala Parsi Agiary in Marine Lines, said, "Aug 14 was Pateti, the last day of 1394, and new year 1395 starts Aug 15. More people are expected to visit fire temples since it is a national holiday." Karanjia said there are 55 agiaries in Mumbai.

Janmashtami falls Aug 15-16, said Pt Bharat Bhushan Mishra of Malad. "Aug 15 is the Smart sect celebration while Aug 16 is the Vaishnav festival. However, Rohini nakshatra (under which Lord Krishna was born) does not occur on either day this year," he said. Iskcon's Radha Gopinath Temple at Girgaum Chowpatty is bedecked with flowers and lights. "A special 'Krishna Smaranam' outfit for the Lord features Rajasthani patchwork, gold zardozi embroidery, Swarovski crystals and motifs like the flute, peacock feather, pot of butter, blue lotus, kadamb blossom, honeybee and Kaustubh jewel," said spokesperson Lucky Kulkarni.
