Gymnastics in schools: A vital need in a technology-first world

In this digital-first world, screen time has become a cause of concern for most parents. The joy of seeing children run onto the grounds, participate in jungle gym activities, and so much more, seems to be fading. Most children end up spending time on smartphones playing games, watching videos or interacting more with the virtual world, which also impacts their development. More often, meal times are also dominated by the screens. Long gone are the times when stories were narrated to engage the child, enabling them to also use their imagination. The reducing attention spans, the constant gratification of the screen has also changed the way in which children respond to the world around them. In the context of increasing screen time, physical activity is a necessity. It is imperative for schools to lay strong emphasis on outdoor activities that balance classroom learning. When children explore structured sports and fitness routines, not only do they build their health, but also work on qualities like discipline, focus, resilience and teamwork, which are essential skill sets. Among the most comprehensive forms of physical development is gymnastics—a sport that refines strength, coordination, flexibility, and mental toughness in equal measure. Introducing gymnastics at the school level empowers students with life skills and promotes a lifelong affinity for fitness and movement. One of the schools that has introduced its children to the delights of gymnastics is the Gaudium School , known for its progressive and holistic approach to education. Recently, it concluded its second edition of GymQuinn– a two-day national-level gymnastics festival, which was held on 5th and 6th July 2025.
