Oh hey, Square Enix announced a turn-based JRPG: Octopath Traveler 0 is coming this year and it looks like it's added 8-character fights and some Suikoden to the mix

Update: A new blog from Square Enix reveals Octopath Traveler 0 is a prequel coming to PC, PS5, PS4, and Xbox Series X|S on the same day as the Nintendo Switch family. Oh, there are also over 30 recruitable party members this time and, yes, eight-character parties comprised of front and back rows. Original Story: Did Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 make you yearn for another turn-based Final Fantasy? Well, I'm here to let you know Square Enix never wiped its hands of the genre. In fact, it just announced another turn-based HD-2D RPG called Octopath Traveler 0 and it's coming this year. We got our first look at the third Octopath Traveler game via today's Nintendo Direct, and, boy, does it look good. Octopath Traveler 0 is coming to the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on December 4, 2025 - plus, it looks like it's building on top of everything we love about the old-school-style series already. That gorgeous HD-2D art style is intact. The strategic BP-based combat from Bravely Default returns. And there seems to be another potentially world-ending threat to contend with. But there's also plenty that's all-new. In a series first, you can actually create your own custom character, giving you control over their name, appearance, body type, beginning skills, and "Favorite Dish" for some reason. Ripping a page from Suikoden's playbook, town-building is also central to Octopath Traveler 0's plot as our party works to restore their hometown destroyed in a fire. The biggest Suikoden influence, to my eye, was that huge cast, which seemingly includes fights with eight party members stuffed onto the screen. Our looks at combat show eight health bars, eight pixelated little heroes, and eight friendly icons in the turn order UI. Finally making good on the series' namesake - one for every tentacle. Square Enix closed out today's Nintendo Switch 2 partner showcase with a game that features names liable to send you into fits of confused laughter. Launching next year, The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales is an HD-2D action RPG with a silly but acceptable name. (Elliot? Really?) But Philabieldia, the name for where the story takes place, is truly one of the most ridiculous fantasy names I've ever heard. Philabieldia, wow. You know what, I'm in. The ridiculous name signals to me this is the exact kind of high-fantasy, low-stakes silliness I enjoy in not- Final Fantasy Square Enix games. Remakes of the first two Dragon Quest games launch in October
More upgraded blue slimes are on the way: Square Enix just announced that remakes of Dragon Quest 1 and its sequel are launching on October 3oth. The two games will be bundled together under the name Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake and will be available on the PS5, Xbox, PC, and both the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. This is good news if you're a fan of the series, given that the remake of DQIII turned out excellent, marrying the classic RPG gameplay with incredible visuals and sound, along with some welcome quality-of-life tweaks. For the new remakes, Square Enix says that 'in addition to beautiful HD-2D graphics, a refined battle system, numerous quality-of-life updates, and major story additions, both remakes will feature a variety of new content.' As for what that new content is, details 'will be revealed at a later date.' And if you're wondering why this remake series kicked off with the third entry in the franchise, it's because that's how the storylines play out chronologically. DQIII is set years before its predecessors, and in DQI and II players take control of the descendants of the hero from the third game. It's a little complicated, but in October newcomers will finally be able to complete the story. To that end, Square Enix will also be launching a digital-only collection with all three games, called Dragon Quest HD-2D Erdrick Trilogy Collection. It'll be available for $99.99.
