CM Siddaramaiah challenges BJP-JDS to debate on development; slams ‘false propaganda'

MYSURU: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday challenged the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party and Janata Dal (Secular) for a debate to know about who has contributed how much towards the state's development. Accusing the Opposition of false propaganda, Siddaramaiah said BJP and JDS should stop misleading people. Siddaramaiah was addressing a mega convention, Sadhana Samavesha, organised by his government, where development works worth Rs 2,578 crore for Mysuru were inaugurated and foundation stones laid. 'I wish the BJP and JDS leaders had come for the event to see the programmes we have launched,' he said, asking the Opposition if the State Government was bankrupt as claimed by them owing to the guarantees, then how will they launch Rs 2,578 crore worth projects. Clarifying that the event was not a show of strength of Siddaramaiah, the Chief Minister said that the government has exhibited to the people the strength of development through the samavesha. He said that the BJP had never come to power on its own and had always gotten back door entry through Operation Lotus. Recalling that the JDS had won 59 seats under his leadership, it has now been reduced to 18 seats. 'JDS is losing its strength every five years and will never come to power in the state. Knowing that they are losing their base and sheen, JDS has joined hands with BJP and won just two seats in the 2024 Parliamentary polls. 'NDA won 19 seats in Karnataka. But its leaders like HD Kumaraswamy, Basavaraj Bommai and Pralhad Joshi have not raised their voice against the injustice meted out to the state in the devolution of taxes. The Centre has just given us Rs 65,000 crore as against Rs 4.5 lakh crore in taxes,' the CM said. He criticised PM Narendra Modi and the BJP for 'copying the guarantee schemes of Karnataka' and implementing them in Delhi, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, and now in poll-bound Bihar. 'We are focusing on the 90 per cent of the population, whereas the BJP is worried about the 10 per cent population from the upper caste and the rich, as they are against social justice and the Constitution,' he said.

GMDC soars 11% in weak market on huge volumes; stock nears 52-week high

Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC) share price today Shares of Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation moved higher by 11 per cent to ₹421.65 on the BSE in Friday's intra-day trade amid heavy volumes in an otherwise weak market. The stock price of the industrial minerals company was trading close to its 52-week high of ₹428 touched on July 1, 2025. It had hit a record high of ₹505 on February 5, 2024. The stock has bounced back 86 per cent from its 52-week low of ₹226.20 hit on March 3, 2025. At 01:34 PM: GMDC was trading 10.9 per cent higher at ₹420.80, as compared to 0.68 per cent decline in the BSE Sensex. The average trading volumes on the counter jumped nearly 10-fold. A combined 13.43 million equity shares changed hands on the NSE and BSE. What's driving the 86% surge in GMDC's stock price in past three-and-half months? According to media reports, the PMO is likely to hold a key stakeholder meeting on the rare-earth magnet crisis on July 18. The Ministry of Heavy Industries is preparing to roll out a subsidy scheme worth ₹1,345 crore aimed at promoting domestic manufacturing of rare earth magnets, Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy said on July 11, reported news agency PTI. The proposal is currently under inter-ministerial consultation. A proposed plan by India to spur local production of rare-earth magnets has drawn initial interest from a clutch of large conglomerates; Bloomberg had reported quoting people familiar with the matter, as the country seeks to cut its reliance on China for these vital electric-vehicle and wind-turbine materials. The Indian government is planning an incentive program for private sector firms manufacturing these magnets. Meanwhile, Roopwant Singh, Managing Director, GMDC, while announcing March 2025 quarter results on May 15, 2025 said that FY25 has been a year of steady performance and disciplined operations for GMDC. The company has remained focused on consistency and efficiency, while also moving ahead with key long-term projects. The progress made in Odisha, particularly in the Baitarani West block, reflects the company's future-ready approach and commitment to timely execution in line with national energy priorities. Looking ahead, GMDC estimate Capex outlay to the tune of ₹15,000 crore up to FY30, with key investments being ₹7,000 crore towards capacity expansion in Lignite, ₹2,500 crore for launch of Odisha mining operations and ₹4,000 crore towards new business build in Critical minerals space. Rare-earth elements (REE) are a group of 17 metals typically occurring together in natural geological environments. The suite of rare earths is split into two distinct sub-categories, the Light Rare-earth Elements (LREE) including Scandium (Sc) and the elements between Lanthanum (La) and Gadolinium (Gd), and the Heavy Rare-earth Elements (HREE) including Yttrium (Y) and the elements between Terbium (Eu) and Lutetium (Lu). GMDC in its FY24 annual reports said that the company has been nominated as a prospective lessee for mining of REE & other associated minerals by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) Government of India for one of the world's largest rare earth deposits at Ambadungar, a village in Chhota Udepur district of Gujarat and is in the process of preparation and approval of mining plan. GMDC further said its REE exploration project aims to establish India as a leading global player in this field, benefiting the country's economic and strategic development. The company plans to build a complete REE value chain, from mining to end-product manufacturing. Meanwhile, India is taking a multi-pronged, well-funded, and coordinated approach - with exploration, regulation, state capacity, private participation, recycling, diplomacy - and while the progress is rapid, building a full domestic rare-earth supply chain remains a multi-year journey. Long-term self-reliance is now a national mission, said analysts at InCred Equities.

Horse-Trading In Karnataka? Ruling Congress, BJP Accuse Each Other Of Plotting Defections

Karnataka Congress claims leaders caught between BJP's Vijayendra and JDS's Kumaraswamy sending feelers. Congress is buying its own MLAs to keep CM post intact, says BJP There may not be an election in sight, but Karnataka's political atmosphere is heating up as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claims the Congress is luring MLAs to settle the leadership struggle between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar. The Congress, in turn, has hit back, saying that 10 to 15 MLAs from the BJP-Janata Dal Secular alliance are knocking on its doors, wanting to jump ship. Senior minister and Industries Minister MB Patil claimed that several disgruntled MLAs from the saffron alliance were 'keen to join" the Congress. Patil said, 'We have over 140 MLAs in the Congress now. The BJP's dream of bringing down the Congress won't be realised, as at least 80-85 MLAs have to defect for that. In 2019, they [the BJP] managed to get 19 MLAs to defect to their side and help them form the government. But it won't happen again. What Operation Lotus are you talking about? It is their MLAs who are knocking on our doors now." A senior Congress leader said that while there have been several feelers from a section of BJP leaders to the Congress, there are BJP leaders who are fed up with the constant infighting in the party, especially from the factions caught between BJP's Vijayendra and JDS's H D Kumaraswamy. 'Even within the JDS, there's growing frustration under H D Kumaraswamy's leadership. There are MLAs who want to jump ship and are waiting in the wings—it may be just a matter of time," said a senior Congress functionary. Joshi was reacting to a claim made by Hungund Congress MLA Vijayanand Kashappanavar, who said the BJP had drawn up a list of 55 Congress MLAs it was targeting. Kashappanavar said the BJP was threatening MLAs with central agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to get them to defect. Joshi denied this outright and turned the charge around: 'It is the Congress that is busy buying its own MLAs to keep the CM post intact. Kashappanavar's statements are false and only meant to hide the internal dealings going on within their party," Joshi said. Operation Kamala déjà vu? The accusations have revived memories of Operation Kamala—the BJP's infamous but effective strategy of engineering defections. First executed in 2008, it helped BS Yediyurappa form the government by getting opposition MLAs to resign, contest again on BJP tickets, and win with a big margin. It was pulled off again in 2019—this time bringing down the Congress-JDS coalition government of H D Kumaraswamy. As many as 19 Congress MLAs and 3 from the JD(S) resigned, collapsing the 14-month-old government and paving the way for the BJP's return, once again under the leadership of B.S. Yediyurappa. He was later replaced mid-term by Basavaraj Bommai. Earlier claims In August last year, Congress MLA Ravikumar Gowda from Mandya made a sensational claim: the BJP had upped its offer to MLAs from Rs 50 crore to Rs 100 crore. 'Someone called me and said they were ready to buy 50 MLAs at Rs 100 crore. I told him to keep the money—I even thought of complaining to the ED," Gowda had said. 'They're trying every day to destabilise our government, but no one's falling for it. Our government is stable, our CM is strong," he insisted when speaking to this reporter. In November 2023, Patil had once again stirred the pot by claiming that more than 20 BJP MLAs and around 10 from the JDS were ready to join the Congress. This came right after HD Kumaraswamy offered to support Shivakumar with 19 MLAs if he wanted to take over as CM. However, political equations have since changed—Kumaraswamy and Shivakumar are now arch-rivals, and Kumaraswamy is a Union Minister, with his JDS now in alliance with the BJP. AMP 2047 (Image credits: IANS) The government of India has initiated the formulation of the Automotive Mission Plan 2047 (AMP 2047), a strategic roadmap aligned with the 'Viksit Bharat @2047' vision. The plan aims to establish India as a global leader in the automotive sector, focusing on innovation, sustainability, and increasing the country's share in global automotive trade, the ministry of heavy industries said on Thursday. Seven sub-committees, comprising experts from the government, industry, and academia, have been formed to guide the development of AMP 2047. The committees have held their first meeting to define the plan's objectives, framework, and specific targets for sectoral growth, exports, and industry advancement. "The vision for 2047 is not an aspiration but a strategic road map backed by concrete targets for sector growth, exports, and industry advancement. We must think beyond specific technologies or companies and focus on India's global standing in 2047, aiming to increase our share in global automotive trade through innovation and quality," said Hanif Qureshi, additional secretary in the ministry of heavy industries as quoted by PTI. The plan sets milestones for 2030, 2037, and 2047, with a focus on addressing challenges such as technological advancements, electric mobility, and charging infrastructure. Government-industry collaboration underway The initiative is being led by the ministry of heavy industries under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the guidance of minister for heavy industries and Steel H D Kumaraswamy. It involves active participation from various ministries, including the ministry of power, ministry of road transport and highways, ministry of commerce, ministry of petroleum and natural gas, DPIIT, and the ministry of environment, forest and climate change. Industry bodies such as SIAM, ACMA, CII, FICCI, academic institutions, testing agencies, and research think tanks are also part of the collaborative process. "The ministry of heavy industries, government of India, under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and with the guidance of Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H D Kumaraswamy has initiated the formulation of the Automotive Mission Plan 2047 (AMP 2047), a strategic roadmap aligned with the 'Viksit Bharat @2047' vision. The inaugural meeting of the AMP 2047 sub-committees was held to outline the objectives and framework," said an official statement. Building on AMP 2026 The AMP 2047 builds upon the earlier Automotive Mission Plan 2016–2026 (AMP 2026), which aimed to position India among the top three global players in engineering, manufacturing, and export of vehicles and components. AMP 2026 also targeted increasing the sector's contribution to over 12 per cent of India's GDP and generating 65 million additional jobs Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays . Land grabbing case: SC stays contempt proceedings against union minister HD Kumaraswamy

The Supreme Court on Thursday stayed an order making Union Minister and JDS leader H D Kumaraswamy a party to the ongoing contempt proceedings over the alleged large-scale land encroachment in a Karnataka village. A bench comprising Justices Pankaj Mithal and Prasanna B Varale took note of the plea of Kumaraswamy, the central heavy industries minister, against the Karnataka High Court 's April 17 order and issued a notice to NGO " Samaj Parivartan Samudaya " being represented by lawyer Prashant Bhushan. "The above order in the writ petition was passed by the high court on the basis of the statement by the additional advocate general wherein he stated that the state will comply with the order dated August 5, 2014, passed by the Karnataka Lokayukta within a period of three weeks," it said. Live Events The order of the Lokayuta, the bench said, was detailed but interlocutory in nature and later, the Lokayukta finally closed the proceedings on March 3, 2021. The top court recorded the submissions of senior advocate C A Sundaram, appearing for the leader, saying there cannot be contempt proceedings on an interim order of the Lokayukta when the case was closed later by the ombudsman itself. "The second submission is, that at the relevant time, the petitioner was not a party to the contempt proceedings but even then, the actions were taken against them for eviction. Therefore, this court vide order dated May 28, 2025 disposed of the SLP preferred by the petitioner with liberty to bring to the notice of the high court that he has been deleted from the contempt proceedings," it recorded. Sundaram said an application was filed by Kumarwaswamy in the high court following the apex court direction, but he was made a party in the ongoing contempt proceedings instead. "The submission is, he has not filed for impleadment but has brought it to the notice of the court as directed by this court. Issue notice," the bench ordered. Any response the the leader's plea was directed to be filed within four weeks. "In the meanwhile, the effect and operation of impugned order dated 17 April 2025 will remain in abeyance," the top court added. The bench, however, did not issue notices to other parties including the Karnataka government on the plea of the minister. The present contempt proceedings arose from the NGO's plea, which refers to a 2011 Lokayukta interlocutory report flagging illegal occupation of government land. The state government later constituted a special investigation team which reportedly found prima facie evidence supporting the allegations. The high court, acting on a 2020 assurance from the then advocate general that the state would act upon the Lokayukta's findings, closed the case. Later, the Lokayukta also formally closed its own proceedings in 2021 due to jurisdictional limitations. However, a contempt petition was later admitted by the high court against state authorities for allegedly failing to reclaim the encroached lands, as initially recommended. During the course of the proceedings, eviction notices were issued to Kumaraswamy, even though he was not a party to the contempt case at the time. Kumaraswamy moved the Supreme Court, which disposed of his plea on March 28, 2025, directing him to take the matter up with the high court. He then filed an application clarifying that he should not be subjected to eviction since he had not been impleaded in the proceedings. The high court subsequently added him as a respondent on April 17 which he has challenged in the top court.
