Kumaraswamy blames Cong for flood, violence
Bengaluru, May 30 (UNI) Former Chief Minister and Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Friday launched a fierce attack on the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government, accusing it of turning Karnataka's coastal region into a 'political disaster' amid relentless floods and rising murders.
Addressing the ongoing crisis caused by torrential rains that have battered the state, Kumaraswamy said, 'The floods may be nature's fury, but the murder spree is a political disaster fuelled by your party.'
The former CM highlighted the severe disruption caused by the unrelenting rains, with homes, roads, and bridges collapsing and cities, towns, and villages waterlogged across the state, leaving people in tears and deep distress.
'Instead of acting responsibly and wiping the tears of the people, the Congress government seems desperate to bring blood and tears to their eyes,' Kumaraswamy said, condemning the administration's inadequate disaster preparedness and response.
He criticised the Chief Minister for merely instructing ministers to visit flood-affected areas after lives were lost, likening it to 'bolting the door after the fort has been looted.' Kumaraswamy questioned the government's pre-monsoon preparations and its claim of people-centric governance.
Kumaraswamy also accused the Congress of selective concern, pointing out its apparent indifference to the flood crisis while allegedly exploiting coastal murders for political gain.
'You have been in power for two years, blaming other parties, yet murders in the coastal region have not been curbed despite a particular community voting 100% for your party,' he said, accusing Siddaramaiah's administration of failing to protect people and instead spreading communal venom.
'You have turned a once peaceful garden of communities into a garden of venomous snakes,' Kumaraswamy said, urging the Chief Minister to immediately visit the flood-hit coastal areas and restore hope among the shattered people.

'Fog of war lifting': Kharge attacks Modi govt after remarks by CDS Anil Chauhan on Operation Sindoor
NEW DELHI: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday targeted the Modi government following the remarks made by Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan on Operation Sindoor in an interview in Singapore. Kharge claimed that the nation had been misled and demanding a special session of Parliament to address the issue. 'In the wake of the remarks made by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) in Singapore in an interview, there are some very important questions which need to be asked. These can only be asked if a Special Session of the Parliament is immediately convened. The Modi Govt has misled the nation. The fog of war is now clearing,' Kharge said in a post on X. — kharge (@kharge) Kharge referenced CDS Chauhan who had earlier today, firmly dismissed Pakistan's claims that it had downed six Indian warplanes during Operation Sindoor, describing the statement as "absolutely incorrect". Speaking to Bloomberg TV, during the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, he said, "What is important is that, not the jet being down, but why they were being downed." He explained that the Indian Armed Forces identified tactical errors, corrected them, and resumed operations within two days. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like IIMK Strategic Management IIMK ASMP Apply Now Undo Also read: What CDS Anil Chauhan said on Pakistan's claim of downing India jets during Operation Sindoor Kharge lauded the bravery of IAF pilots, saying: 'Our IAF pilots were risking their lives fighting the enemy. We have suffered some losses, but our pilots were safe. We salute their resolute courage and bravery.' However, he stressed that a 'comprehensive strategic review is the need of the hour.' 'The Congress party demands a Comprehensive Review of our Defence Preparedness by an independent expert committee, on the lines of the Kargil Review Committee,' he added. Kharge also raised concerns over US President Donald Trump's repeated claim that he brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. 'This is a direct affront to the Shimla Agreement,' he said, questioning why the Modi government had not provided clarity on Trump's assertions or the affidavit filed by the US Secretary of Commerce in a United States court. 'Instead of clarifying Mr. Trump's repeated assertions, and the affidavit filed by US Secretary of Commerce in the United States Court of International Trade, PM Modi is on an election blitz, taking PERSONAL CREDIT for the valour of our Armed Forces, hiding behind their bravery and dodging the contours of the agreed CEASEFIRE, which the Foreign Secretary announced on 10th, after Mr. Trump's tweet,' Kharge said. 'Is India and Pakistan now again hyphenated? What are the conditions of the CEASEFIRE agreement? Rs 140 Cr Patriotic Indians deserve to know this. ' Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh echoed Kharge's concerns, criticising the lack of transparency from the government. 'It is an extraordinary and telling commentary on Undeclared Emergency that the PM will not chair all-party meetings and will not take Parliament into confidence but the nation gets to know of the first phase of Operation Sindoor through the CDS's interview in Singapore,' Ramesh posted on X. 'Couldn't opposition leaders have been taken into confidence by the PM earlier?' General Chauhan, while speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue, rejected the idea that India and Pakistan had approached nuclear confrontation, calling such claims 'far-fetched.' He also dismissed Pakistan's claims about the success of Chinese-supplied weapons, saying they 'didn't work,' and asserted that India had conducted precision strikes 300 kilometres deep into Pakistani territory.

Siddaramaiah directs CS to issue notices to DDPIs for poor show in SSLC results
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday ordered the issue of notices to the Deputy Directors of Public Instruction (DDPIs) in districts where the pass percentage in the SSLC examination in 2025 was below 60. Mr. Siddaramaiah, who continued the review of progress of all department works for the second day on Saturday with all Deputy Commissioners and zilla panchayat chief executive officers (CEOs), asked Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh to issue notices to the DDPIs. 'If their replies are not satisfactory, initiate further action against them,' the Chief Minister told Ms. Rajneesh. The DDPIs head the Education Department in districts and their supervisory role is vital in ensuring higher pass percentage of students. Kalyana Karnataka The pass percentage of students in government schools in the 2025 SSLC exam was below 60 in many districts. The seven districts of Kalyana Karnataka region recorded a dismal show in the examination, occupying the lowest ranks in the State. Of the bottom seven districts, six belong to the Kalyana Karnataka region, while the seventh, Vijayapura, from the Kittur Karnataka region, ranked 34th, just one place above the last. Kalaburagi district has slipped to the bottom — 35th rank — with a pass percentage of just 42.43, far below the State average of 66.14%. Kalaburagi's decline has been consistent over the past three years, dropping from 29th place in 2023 to 34th in 2024, and now 35th in 2025. The pass percentage in Vijayapura was 49.58, Yadgir 51.6, Raichur 52.05, Bidar 53.25, and Koppal 57.32. Notably, none of the 22 students in the State who achieved a perfect score of 625 out of 625 are from the Kalyana Karnataka region. Despite continued efforts by the Department of Public Instruction and the Kalyana Karnataka Region Development Board (KKRDB), the region continues to lag behind others in educational outcomes. Noting good results in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, in contrast, the Chief Minister asked officials not to give excuses like teacher shortage. Mr. Siddaramaiah asked officials in the backward Kalyana Karnataka region to provide extra attention to SSLC results. He said a sum of ₹906.64 crore was released to build new classrooms under the Viveka scheme. He questioned the Deputy Commissioners of districts where classrooms have not been completed despite fund release. 'Why are DCs not showing interest?' he asked. Visit schools 'The DDPIs should shoulder their responsibilities seriously. The DDPIs, along with secretaries in charge of districts, must visit schools and review the performance of teachers. 'If teachers and the DDPIs show interest, then good results can be achieved,' the Chief Minister said. Noting the falling admissions in government schools, he said, 'This is not a good development. The government is supplying eggs, milk, ragi malt, and soap, and providing hostel facility. Still, why are admissions falling?' he sought to know. Mr. Siddaramaiah said there was a need for teachers and officials to hold talks with parents and stop students from dropping out from schools.

Delivering justice to last citizen of country is our fundamental duty: CJI Gavai
Prayagraj, May 31 (UNI) Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai on Saturday said that whether it is the judiciary or the executive, it is our fundamental duty to deliver justice to the last citizen of the country. On the occasion of the inauguration of the newly constructed chambers and multi-level parking building of Allahabad High Court, the CJI said that in the 75 years of the Constitution, the judiciary and the executive have made many such laws, which have contributed greatly to bringing social and economic equality in India. "Land has been taken from the landlords and given to the people. Farmers were made the owners of the land. There are many such laws, under which the working class and labour class of the country were empowered," he said. On this occasion, he thanked Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for providing funds for such a big facility for the lawyers. He said that this building is being inaugurated today on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Ahilyabai Holkar, who worked in India with a sense of social justice, and is a matter of pride for us. The CJI said that when Baba Saheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar presented the final draft of the Constitution of India before the Constitutional Assembly on November 25, 1949, the speech he gave was a direction-giving one for our country. "At that time, he had warned that unless we remove social and economic inequality, democracy will not be able to be established in this country in the true sense. Today we see that in our 75-year journey, our executive and judiciary have made a big contribution to bringing social and economic equality along with equality in India," he said. He said that as the CM also said that our Constitution has strongly taken the country forward towards progress in the period of 75 years. "When the Constitution was being made, it was said that it is too federal. Then Baba Saheb had replied that this is such a Constitution which will keep India united and strong in both normal and emergency situations," he said. He said, "Today we see what the situation is in our neighbouring countries and India today, after 75 years, is not only progressing, but whenever the country faces a crisis, it has remained strong and united. If the credit for this should be given to anyone, it should be given to the Indian Constitution." The CJI said, "I am happy that after becoming the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India, I have got the opportunity to speak on the holy land of Prayagraj in the first official programme itself. We have had a very close relationship with Prayagraj. Just now on the stage, Meghwal ji said that Yogi ji is the most powerful and hardworking CM of this country. I would like to say that the land of Allahabad belongs to powerful people." He said that the land of Prayagraj has a very dignified contribution in the history of UP. "The name of this land is written in golden letters in the legal field. Before independence, Motilal Nehru, Jawaharlal Nehru, Tej Bahadur Sapru and many such legal scholars are named among the few best lawyers of the country," he said. He said, "Similarly, in the Hindi literature of India, many scholars of Prayagraj like Mahadevi Verma, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, Sumitranandan Pant, Suryakant Tripathi Nirala, Subhadra Kumari Chauhan have made a significant contribution. The entire country also respects the sacrifice of Chandrashekhar Azad in the history of India's independence." The CJI said, "Today, by inaugurating this grand building, we are dedicating it to the citizens of the country. I would like to congratulate the Allahabad High Court, its Chief Justice, all the Justice brothers and sisters and all the members of the Bar Association of Allahabad High Court that you have got such a grand building that will make the Bar Association of the entire country jealous. I keep roaming a lot in the country, have also gone abroad a lot, but I have not seen such a big building and so many facilities for advocates anywhere in the world," he said. He said, "For this, I would like to thank the CM for giving such a huge amount of funds. Not only this, with the efforts of the CM, work is also being done on judicial buildings in all the districts. In this, all the facilities will be provided to the judges as well as the parties, litigants and lawyers." Justice Gavai said that the government and the High Court have taken care not only of the judges and the lawyers but also of the litigants. "We have been told that a big construction will be done on the adjacent plot and great facilities will be provided to the litigants who come there. There will be special facilities for all, including the disabled and women. All these things show that we work not only for the lawyers or the judges but also for the citizens of the country, who come to the judiciary in the hope of justice," he said. He said, "I especially want to mention the judges of the High Court who sacrificed their bungalows for this building. This is a unique example between the bar and the bench. Unless the bar and the bench work together, the chariot of justice cannot move forward." UNI AB GNK
