Siddaramaiah directs CS to issue notices to DDPIs for poor show in SSLC results
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday ordered the issue of notices to the Deputy Directors of Public Instruction (DDPIs) in districts where the pass percentage in the SSLC examination in 2025 was below 60.
Mr. Siddaramaiah, who continued the review of progress of all department works for the second day on Saturday with all Deputy Commissioners and zilla panchayat chief executive officers (CEOs), asked Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh to issue notices to the DDPIs. 'If their replies are not satisfactory, initiate further action against them,' the Chief Minister told Ms. Rajneesh. The DDPIs head the Education Department in districts and their supervisory role is vital in ensuring higher pass percentage of students.
Kalyana Karnataka
The pass percentage of students in government schools in the 2025 SSLC exam was below 60 in many districts. The seven districts of Kalyana Karnataka region recorded a dismal show in the examination, occupying the lowest ranks in the State. Of the bottom seven districts, six belong to the Kalyana Karnataka region, while the seventh, Vijayapura, from the Kittur Karnataka region, ranked 34th, just one place above the last.
Kalaburagi district has slipped to the bottom — 35th rank — with a pass percentage of just 42.43, far below the State average of 66.14%. Kalaburagi's decline has been consistent over the past three years, dropping from 29th place in 2023 to 34th in 2024, and now 35th in 2025.
The pass percentage in Vijayapura was 49.58, Yadgir 51.6, Raichur 52.05, Bidar 53.25, and Koppal 57.32. Notably, none of the 22 students in the State who achieved a perfect score of 625 out of 625 are from the Kalyana Karnataka region. Despite continued efforts by the Department of Public Instruction and the Kalyana Karnataka Region Development Board (KKRDB), the region continues to lag behind others in educational outcomes.
Noting good results in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, in contrast, the Chief Minister asked officials not to give excuses like teacher shortage.
Mr. Siddaramaiah asked officials in the backward Kalyana Karnataka region to provide extra attention to SSLC results. He said a sum of ₹906.64 crore was released to build new classrooms under the Viveka scheme. He questioned the Deputy Commissioners of districts where classrooms have not been completed despite fund release. 'Why are DCs not showing interest?' he asked.
Visit schools
'The DDPIs should shoulder their responsibilities seriously. The DDPIs, along with secretaries in charge of districts, must visit schools and review the performance of teachers. 'If teachers and the DDPIs show interest, then good results can be achieved,' the Chief Minister said.
Noting the falling admissions in government schools, he said, 'This is not a good development. The government is supplying eggs, milk, ragi malt, and soap, and providing hostel facility. Still, why are admissions falling?' he sought to know.
Mr. Siddaramaiah said there was a need for teachers and officials to hold talks with parents and stop students from dropping out from schools.

In a sharp political swipe, Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna on Sunday criticised Chief Minister Siddaramaiah saying he has become like 'a train that missed the village station.' 'The old Siddaramaiah is lost. He may take 10 steps forward, but then retreats 50 steps backward under pressure,' he said, while responding to media questions in Kalaburagi about the Hemavati Link Canal Project in Tumakuru. Accusing the State government of stagnation and political favouritism, the Central Minister condemned the Congress government for implicating farmers who are opposing the project. 'The State government is acting like stagnant water, trying to appease some while punishing others unjustly. Why are poor farmers being targeted with criminal cases? What wrong have they done? The State government should stop harassing people. Officials who once declared the project unfeasible are now saying it's possible, just to protect their positions,' he said urging the State government to work with Central irrigation experts to resolve issues on technical merit. Speaking on railway projects in Karnataka, Mr. Somanna said that works worth ₹7,654 crores have been announced in budget for 2025-26. 'During the UPA government, Karnataka got an insignificant amount for railway projects. Now, the amount has crossed ₹7,000 crore. Vande Bharat Express trains are already running across 13 districts in the State. There have been requests to run Vande Bharat trains between Mangaluru and Bengaluru and Belagavi and Bengaluru. These services will be launched shortly,' he said. Acknowledging concerns that rail services are becoming increasingly skewed toward upper class passengers due to the focus on air-conditioned coaches, Mr. Somanna said that Indian Railways will soon introduce 10,000 new general class coaches to better serve the needs of common passengers and address overcrowding in trains across the country. Mr. Somanna also noted that the Indian Railways is making significant savings of approximately ₹18,000 crore annually through electrification and promised that all new railway lines will be launched as electrified routes to ensure sustainability and cost-efficiency. 'As much as 44,000 km of railway lines have been doubled over the last 10 years. Electrification of several routes has led to significant savings, estimated at ₹17,000 crore to ₹18,000 crore, while also helping reduce air pollution. Out of the 300 Amrit Bharat railway stations being upgraded nationwide, 61 are located in Karnataka and are currently under development,' he said. Responding to comparisons with the UPA government, Mr. Somanna pointed out that during the 2009-10 fiscal year, ₹11,500 crore had been spent on doubling projects. In contrast, the present government has allocated ₹70,000 crore for such work in the 2025-26 fiscal year alone, he said arguing that this demonstrates a much stronger commitment to railway development than previous administrations.

We're ready to raise Almatti dam height if there are no legal problems, says Minister
The State government is ready to increase the height of the Lal Bahadur Shastri reservoir on the Krishna at Almatti if there are no legal problems, Minister M.B. Patil said in Vijayapura on Sunday. He was responding to a suggestion by Minister Shivanand Patil that the State will not face any legal problems if it were to increase the height of the dam by one metre. This suggestion, Mr. Shivanand Patil claimed, was given by senior advocate Mohan Kataraki, who has represented the State in the Supreme Court. M.B. Patil said that he has no information of such a suggestion by Mr. Kataraki. 'However, we are open minded about it. We will consult our legal team and go ahead with increasing the dam height if it will not invite any legal challenges. We are willing to take up land acquisition and rehabilitation, if the height is to be increased,' the Minister for Industries said. M.B. Patil dismissed statement made by some farmers leaders and politicians in Maharashtra that impounding water in the Almatti is leading to flooding in Maharashtra, saying they have no scientific basis. 'There have been two study reports that have proved that impounding of water in the Almatti has no effect on flooding in Maharashtra. This is an unfounded belief. There is no need to panic,' he said. Earlier, he chaired an urgent meeting of officials for flood control, COVID-19 preparedness, moon preparations and a review of the district's standing in SSLC and PU examination results. He also spoke to officials about preparing for a Cabinet meeting in Vijayapura district. He told reporters that the government will consider all options to improve the quality of education, including exploring possibilities of working with private institutions. To a query, he said that he will speak to Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna to provide direct railway connectivity to Vijayapura from Hubballi and Hosapete. M.B. Patil said that the State government will file an appeal in the Supreme Court to clear hurdles for the airport in Vijayapura. He laid the foundation stone for basic amenities like high-mast electric lights, bus facilities and sewage system in the Karnataka Housing Board Colony on Ittangihal Road. A water supply project at an estimated cost of ₹90 lakh was launched. He thanked residents for planting 1,500 trees. The Minister inaugurated an indoor stadium in Kanakadas Colony that has a gymnasium, shuttle badminton court, basketball and other facilities. He also inaugurated a unit of the Indira Canteen inaugurated on the District Hospital premises. Newly formed taluks will get Praja Soudhas as government-sanctioned administrative approvals
With Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah handing over the administrative approval letter to the Deputy Commissioner, Yadgir, the long-pending demand of the people of newly formed taluks to have a taluk administrative building is likely to be fulfilled in a year. Mr. Siddaramaiah handed over the letter to B. Susheela, Deputy Commissioner, after new taluks got administrative approval during the recent meeting held at Bengaluru. Yadgir district had three taluks — Yadgir, Shahapur and Shorapur (Surpur) then. But these taluks were divided when Chief Minister Jagadish Shetter announced it in 2013, as Gurmitkal divided from Yadgir, Wadagera from Shahapur and Hunsagi from Shorapur, respectively. Despite the announcement, new taluks weren't provided the taluk administrative buildings even after many years. Therefore, it was forced to function with the locally available government buildings. But, lack of sufficient space for administration, the officers and general public as well faced difficulties, more particularly in summer. Considering the necessity, the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government had promised to construct new taluk administrative buildings and named them 'Praja Soudha' and approved the proposal during the cabinet meeting held at Kalaburagi in September last year. After necessary formalities, taluks have finally got the administrative approval for the construction of Praja Soudhas in each taluk at a cost of ₹ 8.60 crore in two phases. Both Wadagera and Hunsagi taluks were represented by Congress MLAs Channareddy Patil Tunnur and Raja Venugopal Naik, while Gurmitkal was represented by JD(S) MLA Sharanagouda Kandkur. It is learnt that all MLAs have put their hands together for Praja Soudhas get administrative approval. 'The Chief Minister has shown special concern to build administrative buildings in the newly formed taluks, as they were much needed for the smooth functioning of daily activities and public convenience. The new Praja Soudha buildings will have all basic facilities and other requirements as people wanted,' Mr. Tunnur reacted. 'The Yadgir district has remained backward with a lack of civic facilities and government buildings. The government should establish other required buildings, including courts, for taluks for overall development,' Sharanu Gadduge, a pro-Kannada activist, has urged.
