Moment of Silence bill heads to Governor's desk
HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT)- A bill which would require a moment of silence before each school day in Kentucky is now on its way to Governor Beshear's desk. Senate Bill 19 would require moments of silence or reflection at the start of each school day lasting at least one minute, but not exceeding two minutes in length. Disaster team begins work on Brescia University's hail damage The bill outlines that students are to remain seated and silent so that others may exercise their individual choice to 'meditate, pray or engage in any other silent activity.' A late amendment to the bill would also require that local school boards give students the option to travel off campus for up to an hour each week to receive 'moral instruction' with a parent or guardian's permission. Evansville Imam asks City Council for Muslim prayer ordinance
HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT)- A local Imam is asking the Evansville City Council to pass an ordinance, which would allow Muslim employees in the city, as well as students to take time off for Friday prayers. City of Huntingburg approves ordinance to prohibit hoarding During Monday's City Council meeting, Faraji Garth, Imam at Evansville's Masjid As-Sunnah made the request, saying that Evansville is home to hundreds of Muslims, who are obligated to attend Friday Jummah prayers. Garth says that employees and students would be gone for an hour and half to two hours to pray and would make up the time off. He also states that employees are protected by the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which in part, requires employers to reasonably accommodate the religious practice of an employee or or prospective employee, unless it would cause an undue hardship to the employer. Garth says he has attempted to contact employers in order to make requests on the behalf of local Muslims, but his emails have been ignored. Crane in place for future 'Vault' project
HENDERSON, Ky (WEHT) – What lies at the site of the former Old National Bank Building on Main Street is now a large crane. That is also the site of the future project known as 'The Vault'.
