Oman backs UN maritime security efforts, urges global cooperation
New York, USA – Oman has reaffirmed its support for the United Nations Security Council and international initiatives addressing maritime challenges, calling for stronger regional and global cooperation to safeguard maritime navigation and security.
H H Sayyid Shihab bin Harib al Said, a member of Oman's Permanent Delegation to the UN, delivered the statement on Tuesday during a high-level Security Council session titled Maritime Security: Prevention, Innovation and International Cooperation to Address Emerging Challenges, under the agenda item Maintenance of International Peace and Security.
'Given our strategic location overlooking the Strait of Hormuz, Oman places the highest importance on maritime security,' H H Sayyid Shihab said. 'Our natural resources and surrounding maritime environment make the safety of these waters a national priority.'
He highlighted Oman's contribution to facilitating a ceasefire agreement between the United States and authorities in Sanaa, Yemen describing it as a measure to 'ensure freedom of navigation and the smooth flow of international commercial shipping in the Red Sea'.
Oman expressed readiness to work with regional and international partners to address emerging maritime threats, promote innovation in security measures and maintain stability along key global shipping lanes.
