Man arrested in Monaghan on suspected human trafficking offences

Gardaí arrested the man at an undisclosed location in the county this morning under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. That period of detention allows senior investigators to question the man for a period of up to seven days before a decision must be taken to either charge or release him from garda custody. A garda spokesperson said the arrest came on foot of an 'ongoing investigation' into human trafficking 'for the purpose of sexual exploitation and forced criminality'. 'Gardaí attached to the Human Trafficking Investigation and Co-Ordination Unit (HTICU) at the Garda National Protective Services Bureau (GNPSB) arrested a man (50s) this morning, Monday 9th of June, 2025 in Co. Monaghan,' said the spokesperson. 'The male was arrested on suspicion of human trafficking offences. 'He is currently detained under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda Station in the north eastern region.' Gardaí have also issued an appeal to anyone who may be the victim of human trafficking for sexual exploitation to come forward and speak with them at any Garda Station in person or by phone, or by calling the freephone Garda Confidential Line: 1800 666 111.
