Local athletes flex their skills at HYROX Cape Town
Four Ballito and Salt Rock athletes smashed the 2025 HYROX Cape Town fitness challenge, earning podium finishes in a gruelling test of strength, speed and teamwork.
Representing Training Ground Ballito, Kane Herbert, Carolyn Broom and husband-and-wife duo Nicolas Reed and Kyra Cooper-Reed competed in what is dubbed the 'World Series of Fitness Sport' on July 19 and 20.
The event drew more than 5 700 athletes to the Mother City from across the country and beyond, testing endurance, strength and teamwork in a gruelling indoor race format.
In the lead-up to the event, Training Ground introduced HYROX-specific classes to prepare the athletes. Carolyn and Kyra, both 27, delivered a powerful performance to claim second place in the Doubles Women 25-29 age category.
'The race pushed me to find new strength and test my limits. I was filled with so many emotions,' said Kyra, who described the event as both challenging and humbling, with 'insane' energy.
HYROX originated in Hamburg, Germany in 2017 and has grown into a global fitness phenomenon. The race format includes eight 1km runs, each followed by a functional workout station, such as sled pushes, rowing and wall balls.
Nicolas (26) and Kane (35) secured third place in the Pro Doubles Men's 30-35 age group, competing against some of the fittest athletes in the country.
'It was amazing to be part of something that brought people from all walks of life together, each doing this for their own reason. I loved every minute of it!' said Nicolas.
Kane, who hadn't known much about the event before training, said he is already looking forward to the next one.
'When Training Ground introduced HYROX to the gym, I thought it sounded fun and decided to give it a go,' he said.
'The vibe was unreal and the event was incredibly well run.'
Nicolas and Kyra also entered the Doubles Mixed 25-29 category, finishing 10th after deciding to compete at the last minute.
'We entered for the fun of it on Sunday. I didn't even look where we placed,' said Nicolas.
