Mika Salamanca, Will Ashley volunteer in soup kitchens for families affected by inclement weather
Mika Salamanca and Will Ashley braved the weather to extend help to those affected by Typhoon Crising and the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat). On Instagram Wednesday, Sparkle GMA Artist Center shared photos showing the 'Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition' housemates taking part in food preparations. 'From the PBB kitchen to kitchens for-a-cause. Despite the heavy rains and in the spirit of bayanihan, Mika Salamanca and Will Ashley stepped up to serve — volunteering in two soup kitchens in Quezon City and Marikina for families affected by Typhoon Crising and the Southwest Monsoon,' Sparkle wrote in the caption. Aside from preparing hot meals, Mika and Will also helped in raising funds online to support more communities in need. Their efforts were made in partnership with the Angat Bayanihan Volunteer Network of the Angat Buhay Foundation. The triple threat of Crising, Habagat-induced rains, and low-pressure areas contributed to heavy rains — and heavy flooding — in Metro Manila and nearby provinces. On Wednesday, PAGASA said three dams in Luzon continued to release water amid heavy rains due to the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat and a low-pressure area. For those looking to donate to the victims of the heavy rains, here is a list of organizations with relief operations. —Carby Rose Basina/CDC, GMA Integrated News

The death toll due to Crising, the Habagat, and LPA had gone up to seven, with fatalities reported in Northern Mindanao, Mimaropa, Davao Region, Caraga, and Metro Manila. Tropical cyclone Emong is also expected to bring rains over the Ilocos Region and Cordillera Administration Region, according to PAGASA's forecast on Wednesday afternoon, while tropical storm Dante may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Thursday afternoon or evening. Monsoon rains are expected in the coming days throughout Metro Manila and Luzon due to the Habagat, while occasional rains will occur over Western Visayas, Nueva Ecija, Aurora, Quezon, and MIMAROPA. The Bicol Region and the rest of the Visayas, on the other hand, are expected to experience cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms, and isolated rain showers over Mindanao. —CDC, GMA Integrated News

PAGASA: Ondoy, Carina-enhanced Habagat brought more rain in 24 hours
A man wades through a flooded area amid monsoon rains in Cainta, Rizal on July 22, 2025. REUTERS/Eloisa Lopez The Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) brought heavy rains to Metro Manila, causing flooding and traffic jams even before the two low pressure areas outside Luzon developed into tropical cyclones Dante and Emong this week. But how does it compare to the rainfall dumped by Tropical Storm Ondoy in September 2009 and Super Typhoon Carina-enhanced Habagat in July 2024? PAGASA Science Garden in Quezon City recorded 285.8 millimeters (mm) of rain from the Habagat on July 21 and 62.3 mm on July 22, 2025. Speaking to GMA News Online, PAGASA weather specialist Munir Baldomero said 285.8 millimeters of rain is considered moderate to heavy. 'Based sa pagka-categorize, yung 285.8 (mm), pag i-consider natin yung one day, is under moderate to heavy pa rin na ulan,' Baldomero said Wednesday. 'Nasa category po siya kasi moderate to heavy. So, possible pa rin po yung pag ganitong heavy, is pasok na rin po siya kasi sa yellow warning, so flooding pa rin is possible po,' he added. (Based on the categorization, the 285.8 mm, if we consider it in one day, still falls under moderate to heavy rain. Since it's in the moderate to heavy category, it's still possible to issue a yellow warning, so flooding is still possible.) Under a yellow rainfall warning, residents are warned about possible flooding in low-lying areas and near river channels. Baldomero explained that on July 21, the Habagat was observed on the eastern side of Luzon, causing it to affect the weather conditions in Metro Manila. 'Dahil po yung presence ng Habagat sa eastern side ng Luzon. Siya po yung nagpa-iral sa Habagat kaya naka-receive po yung Metro Manila, particularly yung northern part ng Metro Manila, ng ganung amount ng ulan,' Baldomero said. (The presence of the Habagat on the eastern side of Luzon caused this amount of rain in Metro Manila, particularly in the northern part of Metro Manila.) However, the Habagat this week dropped less rain in 24 hours than Ondoy and Carina. Baldomero said that the Carina-enhanced Habagat dumped 323.9 mm of rain in 24 hours or from July 24 to 25, 2024. 'Medyo mas mababa po. Kung 24 hours na paulan yung pag-uusapan, medyo mababa po siya (Habagat) ng ilang mm as compared doon kay Carina po,' Baldomero said. (It's somewhat lower. The Habagat produced a few millimeters less rainfall than Carina at this time of year if we're talking about rainfall over a 24-hour period.) Meanwhile, Ondoy released 455 mm of rain in 24 hours on September 26, 2009. However, Baldomero said that the rains dumped so far in July in Metro Manila exceeded the climatological normal, or average rainfall of the month, of 516.6 mm. Science Garden alone received 1,005.6 mm of rain between July 1 and July 22. 'Nag-exceed na po siya ng 489 mm dito po sa Quezon City (It exceeded 489 mm here in Quezon City),' Baldomero said. Metro Manila will continue to receive rain in the coming days due to the Southwest Monsoon enhanced by Emong and Dante, according to PAGASA. —VBL, GMA Integrated News

Grab, MOVE IT launch disaster relief initiative for drivers, delivery partners
Transport service providers Grab Philippines and MOVE IT on Wednesday launched a comprehensive disaster relief and community support initiative amid the onslaught of Southwest Monsoon or Habagat. The initiative spans immediate aid and longer-term recovery support for Grab's drivers, delivery partners, merchants, and consumers. This will be rolled out in close coordination with local government units and national agencies. In a press release, Grab Philippines Managing Director Ronald Roda said, ''Our hearts go out to the communities hardest hit by this week's inclement weather. At Grab, we believe our role as a platform goes beyond connecting services—it means showing up when it matters most.' 'We are fully mobilized to support our partners and the broader public in this time of need. Through targeted financial assistance, medical support, and relief coordination, we aim to help affected Filipinos recover safely and swiftly,' Roda added. Grab and MOVE IT have also reactivated their GrabCare and MOVE IT Malasakit programs to extend financial and welfare support to those affected by the bad weather. The assistance includes: Calamity Assistance: A one-time financial grant provided to eligible partners whose vehicles—cars or motorcycles—have been damaged as a direct result of the typhoon and severe flooding; Medical and Hospitalization Support: In partnership with Cocolife, Grab is covering emergency room and hospitalization expenses due to typhoon-related incidents at accredited hospitals; and Loan Repayment Holiday: A temporary moratorium on microloan repayments for qualified drivers operating in Metro Manila, Baguio, and Pampanga, providing immediate financial relief in heavily affected urban areas. Grab also started its coordination with various localities for upcoming relief operations and clean-up drives. It also continued monitoring of on-ground conditions to evolve response and recovery programs based on emerging needs. Moreover, Grab reactivated its GrabBayanihan program — a GrabRewards redemption initiative that enables users to convert their points into donation vouchers supporting McDonald's Kindness Kitchen and World Vision. To recall, Grab also donated rubber boats and hot meals to the locality of Marikina City, an area that is severely affected by bad weather. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
