‘Well-known felon' caught trying to speed away from north Georgia deputies

A man described as a 'well-known felon' is now facing more than a dozen charges in Habersham County. Habersham County deputies say they spotted Marvin Chris Mangum, who was wanted out of Hall County, on Ivey Street and tried to pull him over. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Instead, they say Mangum sped off and lost control of his truck and brushed against the bumper of a deputy's patrol unit. He regained control and continued fleeing from police. In a vacant gravel parking lot, deputies say Mangum's truck jumped a ditch and crashed into a Habersham County Sheriff's Office SUV. That's when they say he ran off, but a K9 chased him down. He was arrested and charged with DUI by Georgia State Patrol. Periods of widespread rain for Saturday, into next week The sheriff's office says they are also charging him with possession of methamphetamine, fleeing or attempting to elude, obstruction and several traffic offenses. He was treated for minor injuries before being taken to the Habersham County Detention Center where he was given a $15,600 bond. He also faces a probation hold for Hall County. A 24-year-old remains under investigation for child cruelty after authorities said she mistreated a child under her care. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Last year, the Habersham County Sheriff's Office began investigating 24-year-old Brooke Morgan Bestpitch, of Alto. On Dec. 18, 2024, Habersham investigators determined abusive activities took place at a home in Hall County and reached out to the Hall County Sheriff's Office. Hall County investigators said they found evidence that Bestpitch gave a toddler a marijuana joint and allowed the boy to smoke from it. As a result, Bestpitch was arrested on Feb. 6, 2025. She was charged with reckless conduct and posted a $1,300 bond. Bestpitch was released from jail the following day. Investigators said they found video and photo evidence of the victim hogtied with belts and yarn. Authorities said they also found a video of the child with a dog leash around his neck and being pulled by Bestpitch, constricting the child's neck. The sheriff's office said it issued an arrest warrant for first-degree child cruelty. Bestpitch was arrested again, this time at her home in Alto on Friday. 4 injured in ATV crash in North GA mountains

Four people were injured when an ATV crashed on Saturday in Habersham County. At approximately 8:45 p.m., deputies with the Habersham County Sheriff's Office responded to a reported all-terrain vehicle wreck with injuries in the Macedonia community outside Clarkesville. The crash happened near Wild Iris Road off Mountain Ranch Road. Four people were injured and taken to a local hospital by medics. Georgia State Patrol is investigating the crash. Alto couple arrested for large amounts of drugs, guns, and cash in home

The Brief Jonathan Clayton Burrell of Cornelia and Kateland Elaine Heffner of Cleveland were arrested on Feb. 11 during a search warrant execution at a home on Kitchens Road in Alto. Authorities confiscated large amounts of marijuana, THC concentrates, edibles, two firearms, and cash. Both suspects face multiple felony charges and remain in custody at the Habersham County Detention Center. HABERSHAM COUNTY, Ga. - A two-week investigation into illegal drug activity in Habersham County resulted in the arrest of two suspects, the seizure of drugs, firearms, cash, and two vehicles, and an ongoing effort to combat narcotics distribution in the area. What we know The Habersham County Sheriff's Office Narcotics Division, along with the Appalachian Regional Drug Enforcement Office and Special Operations Unit, executed a search warrant at 550 Kitchens Road in Alto on Tuesday. During the search, deputies seized a large quantity of marijuana, THC vapes, gummies, edibles, and concentrates, along with two firearms and cash. As a result, Burrell and Heffner were arrested and booked at the Habersham County Detention Center in Clarkesville. Burrell faces multiple felony charges, including: Sale of a controlled substance Possession of a firearm during certain crimes (2 counts) Possession with intent to distribute (3 counts) Unlawful possession with intent to distribute marijuana Heffner is also charged with multiple felonies, including: Sale of marijuana Possession of a firearm during certain crimes (2 counts) Possession of THC with intent to distribute (3 counts) Possession of marijuana with intent to distribute What's next The investigation remains active and ongoing as authorities work to identify additional individuals involved in illegal drug distribution.
