Arab League Outlines Key Points on the Agenda of Preparatory Meeting for Development Summit in Baghdad
The Assistant Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, announced on Monday the key points on the agenda of the preparatory meeting for the upcoming Arab Development Summit to be held in Baghdad. In her statement, Abu Ghazaleh expressed gratitude to the Republic of Iraq for hosting the summit, emphasizing its regional significance: 'We extend our sincere thanks to the Republic of Iraq for hosting this significant Arab League event. It sends a clear and powerful message that Iraq has recovered and is once again capable of hosting regional and international events.' She underscored the importance of the occasion, stating, 'This summit is particularly significant, as for the first time, two summits will be convened simultaneously — the Arab Economic and Social Development Summit and the Arab Summit.' Abu Ghazaleh explained that the preparatory meetings, currently underway at the level of senior officials, are focused on reviewing the agenda submitted by member states, the General Secretariat of the Arab League, affiliated Arab organizations, and other relevant bodies. She noted that the discussions include a number of substantial matters, clarifying that, 'The first point on the agenda is a report covering the period between the previous Arab Economic and Social Development Summit — held six years ago in Lebanon — and the current summit set to take place in Baghdad.' Abu Ghazaleh concluded by confirming the official schedule, stating: 'The Arab Summit will be held on the morning of the 17th of this month, followed in the evening by the Economic and Social Development Summit.'

Arab League Discusses Launch of Arab Observatory for Women's Economic Development
Mohamed Mandour In implementation of the resolution adopted by the Council of the League of Arab States at the Summit Level during its 33rd session, held in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and in accordance with Resolution 18 issued by the Arab Women's Committee at its 43rd Ministerial Session concerning the initiative of the United Arab Emirates to establish the Arab Observatory for Women's Economic Development, the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States (Social Affairs Sector – Women's Department) convened a high-level meeting at the Level of Permanent Representatives to discuss the official launch plan for the Observatory. The initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen joint Arab action and elevate the role of women in achieving sustainable development. The League of Arab States, with active participation from its member states, continues to mobilise regional mechanisms aimed at promoting women's economic empowerment. The establishment of the Observatory reflects a collective commitment to overcoming structural barriers and fostering sustainable frameworks that bolster women's participation in the development process. It aligns closely with the objectives outlined in the Arab Development Agenda (2023–2028) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 5 on gender equality. Ambassador Dr. Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Social Affairs Sector, said that the initiative represents the UAE's forward-looking vision to champion women's leadership and enhance their economic contributions by establishing an integrated regional framework that broadens opportunities for growth and empowerment across the Arab world. The meeting is slated to witness the attendance of Her Excellency Noura Khalifa Al Suwaidi, Secretary-General of the UAE General Women's Union. The Observatory is designed to serve as a strategic tool for policymakers by developing a comprehensive digital platform to monitor and analyse women's economic participation. It will provide a robust database, establish effective indicators for evaluation, implement targeted training programmes, and recognise exceptional achievements by Arab women through incentive-based awards. Arab League organises 16th Meeting of Technical Advisory Committee of Council of Arab Health Ministers
Mohamed Mandour The General Secretariat is convening the 16th Meeting of the Technical Advisory Committee of the Council of Arab Health Ministers on 28–29 April at the headquarters of the League of Arab States. The meeting was held in preparation for the 62nd Ordinary Session of the Council of Arab Health Ministers and its Executive Office, scheduled to take place in Geneva on 18–19 May in conjunction with the 78th Session of the World Health Assembly. Ambassador Dr. Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Social Affairs Sector, affirmed that the Health and Humanitarian Aid Department of the Technical Secretariat would review several critical health issues. Foremost among these are the health conditions in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem and the occupied Syrian Golan, particularly in light of the unprecedented humanitarian and health crisis affecting the Gaza Strip and its healthcare services. The agenda further includes deliberations on sustaining health and humanitarian support for the Palestinian people in Gaza, as well as examining the health and humanitarian situation in the Union of the Comoros. Additionally, the Committee will address and follow up on a number of priority health topics, including: the development of medical and hospital tourism within the Arab region; the oversight of activities and programmes of the Arab Authority for Blood Transfusion Services and the Arab Drug Agency (WAAD); the recommendations of the Arab Health Committee for Emergency Preparedness and Response; the Arab guiding strategy to promote the application of health economics approaches to address major health priorities for the period 2025–2030; collective Arab efforts to combat drug abuse; as well as the proposed frameworks for physician visitation exchanges and training programmes among Arab countries. He further noted that the draft unified statement of the Council of Arab Health Ministers, intended for presentation at the 78th Session of the World Health Assembly, will be reviewed. The statement is scheduled to be delivered by the Minister of Health and Community Protection of the United Arab Emirates. Moreover, the meeting will ratify the winners of the 2025 Arab Doctor Award and consider financial matters related to the Arab Fund for Health Development. UAE participates in Arab Economic and Social Council meeting
The UAE delegation was headed by Abdullah Ahmed Al Saleh, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Economy. The session was chaired by the Kingdom of Bahrain and attended by Ambassador Dr. Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League and Head of the Social Affairs Sector, along with Arab Ministers of Economy or their representatives.

LAS Marks Arab Cultural Heritage Day
Mohamed Mandour In line with the implementation of Resolution. 8030, 145th ordinary session, C2 of 11/3/2016 of the Council of the League of Arab States, which designates Arab Cultural Heritage Day as an annual celebration, the General Secretariat (Social Affairs Sector – Department of Culture and Dialogue of Civilisations) is organising a discussion panel on Environmental Heritage and its Sustainability. The event aims to highlight the vital link between environmental preservation and heritage conservation as a means of bridging the past and present to shape a sustainable future. The panel held on 24 February at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States. Ambassador Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Social Affairs Sector, said that the discussion panel will address a significant aspect of heritage—environmental heritage and sustainable development—as interconnected elements that contribute to the formation of resilient, culturally rich, and sustainable societies. She underscored that viewing heritage as an integral part of cultural identity reinforces its role as a foundation for building a future rooted in sustainability principles. As part of the event, the Arab Council of the Union of Arab Archaeologists will present a special film showcasing the heritage of Palestine. Additionally, the General Secretariat host an artistic heritage exhibition featuring contributions from the Institute of Arab Manuscripts, the National Centre for Children's Culture at the Egyptian Ministry of Culture, and the Without Borders Association for Fine and Popular Arts in the Arab Republic of Egypt. The celebration bring together representatives from member states of the League of Arab States, alongside Arab, regional, and international organisations, civil society institutions, and distinguished experts and researchers in the field of heritage, fostering dialogue and collaboration to safeguard cultural heritage for future generations.
