Nevada residents hurry for Real IDs before deadline
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The deadline to get your real ID is approaching fast. Those who still need to get theirs have just over a week left to do so if they plan to fly after the May 7 deadline. While many are still trying to get their Real ID, it seems most people are already compliant with the federal mandate. 'We're hitting about 80% compliance in the state, which is great,' Hailey Foster, Public Information Officer for Nevada DMV, said. Still, there are many Nevadans who need to get their Real ID. 'We have been seeing an uptick in our operations,' Foster said. 'A lot of people are wanting to come in and get that Real ID.' The Nevada DMV had to add additional appointments to accommodate the demand. Those without a Real ID will not be able to board domestic flights or access certain federal buildings come next Wednesday, unless they have a passport. Meanwhile, at the airport, some people said they've had their Real ID for years. 'As soon as they told us to, right when COVID hit, many years ago,' Valerie Hooper, traveling from Virginia, said. 'Three years ago, I got mine…Mine was with my driver's license, so I've had it for three years,' West Virginia residents Art and Georgette Adams said. '[The process was] very easy. We just went to the DMV, filled out paperwork, and took a picture. We're here.' Las Vegas resident Willie Mack also said he got his Real ID when he renewed his driver's license. 'I was renewing my ID, and it automatically had it on there, and they said you were going to need it if you wanted to travel throughout the U.S. on a plane, so they already did their job for me,' Mack said. 'Now I ain't gotta wait in that long line.' For frequent flyers, getting their Real ID was a no-brainer. 'I needed the Real ID. I travel quite a bit. I travel once or twice a month. At the airport, it says that you need one,' Las Vegas resident Jaime Leona said. If you're unsure if you have a Real ID, look in the upper right corner. If your driver's license or ID has a star there, you have a Real ID. If the star is missing, you do not. While some states allow people to get their Real ID online, Nevada requires you to visit a DMV office in person. Nevada DMV is offering walk-in appointments every Tuesday from 3 to 4 p.m. until May 15. You can also schedule Wednesday appointments starting at 8 p.m. on Tuesday. To schedule an appointment, visit the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles Official Website and search 'Appointments'. You must have ALL of the following to get a Real ID at the DMV: Proof of identity (one document) Proof of name change (if you've changed your name) Proof of Social Security number Proof of your Nevada residential address (two documents required) Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Nevadans face deadline for REAL ID, but do you need it?
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – In a few months Nevadans standing in the airport security line will be asked to provide their ticket and Real ID, but what will happen if you don't have one? The countdown clock on the Department of Homeland Security website to May 7 may seem stark, but the deadline for having a REAL ID has some challenges. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reported a low rollout of REAL IDs in Jan. 2024 citing only 56% of driver's licenses and state IDs were compliant. Nevada residents have been rolling into their neighborhood Department of Motor Vehicle locations, and staff expect to see an uptick before the deadline. 'When people see that, they want to try and rush in all at once,' Hailey Foster, an NV DMV spokesperson, said. 'We really encourage people, when you have a free day free time, make that appointment come in, because it is super easy to do, very convenient to have as well.' Foster said the REAL ID is optional and the May 7 deadline is not a strict cutoff. The REAL ID will be required by the deadline for commercial air travel, and access to secure federal buildings, and nuclear power plants, according to the Department of Homeland Security. The TSA, which would enforce the REAL ID rule, proposed in Sept. 2024 that the enforcement date be delayed until 2027, but published a final rule of enforcing the May deadline. 'Identity verification is foundational to security. I urge those who use a driver's license or state-issued identity card as their primary form of identification to access federal facilities or board commercial passenger aircraft, to ensure these credentials are REAL ID-compliant,' TSA Administrator David Pekoske wrote in a statement. The REAL ID is optional as a passport or military ID or other documents can be used for federal purposes, according to the NV DMV. The TSA also has a list of acceptable identification. The bad news is you will have to go to your local NV DMV to get REAL ID and set up an appointment, but the good news is renewals can be done online, according to Foster. 'It's like a typical, standard license,' she said. 'It's the same type of deal. They'll give you that temporary ID or driver's license holder but then as soon as you see that little gold star, you're compliant, which is great.' One more bit of good news, Foster said the REAL ID does give you an opportunity to retake your photo for identification. 'If you like your picture from before, I'm sure that you can just transfer that over as well,' she said. 'So get geared up for picture day.' You can make an appointment for your REAL ID or other needs through the NV DMV portal online. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
