'Two jawans on duty and an ex-servicemen association director from the Army Engineers Regiment heard that my uncle Hakimuddin was arrested. They came to the police station first and then to our house,' said Nawab Ali Shaikh, nephew of Hakimuddin. 'The director of the ex-servicemen association had worked with my uncle,' he said. Meanwhile, the Pune police on Wednesday registered a first information report (FIR) against seven individuals and others for alleged unlawful assembly after a group of members belonging to a right-wing group barged into the house of the family of the Kargil War veteran in Chandannagar late Saturday night accused them of being illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.

PUNE: Police in Pune filed an FIR on Wednesday against six named people and four to five unidentified "accomplices" after a retired Kargil War veteran's family alleged they were coerced into proving Indian citizenship during a late-night raid involving 30 to 40 people. No arrests have been made yet, according to ACP Manoj Patil. Hakimuddin Shaikh, 58, a retired Naik Havildar who served in the Army's 269 Engineer Regiment from 1984 to 2000, said Tuesday that his relatives were harassed at their home in Chandan Nagar around 11.30pm Saturday. Men allegedly kicked the door, shouted religious slogans, and threatened to label the family "Bangladeshi or Rohingya" unless documents were produced. Police commissioner Amitesh Kumar met the family Wednesday and promised the "strictest action" against those responsible. "We have recorded fresh statements and will invoke relevant sections of law in the existing FIR," he said. Kumar denied claims that members of an outfit had arrived in a police van.

PUNE: The family members of a Kargil war veteran have alleged that a group of around 80 people affiliated to a Hindutva outfit barged into their house in Pune and demanded a proof of their Indian citizenship, accusing them of being Bangladeshis. The incident took place in Chandannagar area of the city Saturday midnight, they claimed, adding that some police personnel in plain clothes were also present at that time but they remained mute spectators. Irshad Shaikh (48) said his elder brother Hakimuddin Shaikh, who currently resides in Uttar Pradesh's Pratapgarh, served in the Indian Army and took part in the Kargil war. He retired as a havildar from the Engineers Regiment in 2000. "While my elder brother lives in Uttar Pradesh, I, along with my two brothers and their children, have been living in Pune's Chandannagar area for the last many decades," he said.

Hakimuddin Shaikh, a retired Naik Havildar of the Indian Army's 269 Engineer Regiment who fought in the 1999 Kargil War, expressed deep dismay at the treatment. "I served the country with pride for 16 years. My family is entirely Indian. Why are we being asked to prove our citizenship?" he said. Though Hakimuddin currently resides in his hometown, his extended family has lived in Pune since brother, Irshad Shaikh, added that their family has a long history of military service. "My uncles, Naeemullah khan late Shaikh Mohammad Salim, fought in the 1965 and 1971 wars," he family insisted that the incident was initiated by a mob, not the police. "A group of men barged in shouting slogans, demanding documents. A police van was nearby and one officer tried to intervene, but no real help came," Irshad alleged."My entire family is Indian. Then why are we being asked to prove our citizenship?" he the incident, the family lodged a complaint with the Chandan Nagar police. Instead of receiving protection, they claimed, police took all adult men in the household to the station around midnight and kept them there until 3 contacted, Deputy Commissioner of Police Somay Munde confirmed the police presence in the area that night. "Our team visited the location based on inputs about suspected illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.
