Expedite Melapura drinking water project, says GTD
Mysuru: Former minister and Chamundeshwari MLA GT Devegowda on Wednesday directed officials to expedite the completion of the Melapura drinking water project to provide drinking water to peripheral layouts such as Rammanahalli, Vasantha Nagar, and others on the city outskirts.
He also instructed the preparation of a new detailed project report (DPR) to ensure water supply to neglected layouts.
During a meeting held at the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) Zone-3 office, attended by officials from MCC, Mysuru Development Authority (MDA), and Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWSDB), detailed discussions were held on providing water to the city's outskirts. The MLA issued several directives following the deliberations.
Devegowda emphasised the need for adequate water supply to MCC, local bodies, MDA, and private layouts, stating, "Our priority is to provide water. Some areas should receive water from the Melapura supply." He urged officials to complete works under the Amrut-2 scheme at a faster pace.
KUWSDB officials informed the meeting that water is being supplied from Melapura to the German Press. From there, it needs to reach Rammanahalli, Vasantha Nagar, Police Layout, Nadanahalli, and KBL Layout.

He noted that pipeline work for a tank installed in Rammanahalli is complete, and water supply can commence once minor works are finalised. Additionally, a joint DPR by MDA and KUWSDB will be prepared for other areas and submitted to MDA for approval, after which work can begin under the Amrut-2 scheme.
A plan to supply 5 MLD (million litres per day) of water to Rammanahalli and other layouts has been included. Works are also under way to supply water to Galigarahundi, Vasantha Nagar, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Nagar, and Police Layout.
Another project, costing Rs 34 crore, involves constructing six tanks to supply water to areas like Hanchya, Kalisiddanahundi, and others.
Responding to this, MLA Devegowda stressed preventing water shortages and assured that DPRs submitted for water supply to various areas from Rammanahalli would be discussed in MDA meetings for necessary approvals. Currently, water is being supplied from the Kabini River to layouts like Srirampura and RT Nagar.
Officials requested the release of Rs150 crore for an additional 60 MLD water supply project. Devegowda assured that he would discuss the matter with the DC and bring it to the attention of the district in-charge minister to ensure immediate fund release.
Ongoing works under the Hale Unduwadi project and requests for space allocation for water projects under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) were also discussed. Correspondence regarding these are in progress. Under JJM, a tank near Devegowda Circle will be constructed to supply water to 32 areas.
