‘This can't be happening:' Maritime travellers navigate Air Canada flight cancellations

(THE CANADIAN PRESS/Darryl Dyck) It's been a long and stressful day for Stuart Cherenfant, who is just one of a growing number of Air Canada passengers left scrambling for answers. He was supposed to be headed to the Bahamas but instead has been stuck at Halifax Stanfield International Airport. 'I was supposed to go to Ottawa this morning. My flight was around seven, and I got the notification at the last minute, at around 4:50 a.m. that my flight was cancelled,' explains Cherenfant. '[I thought] this can't be happening because it really took a lot for me to plan this trip. I'm actually heading home for a funeral and it's multiple stops that I have to make.' It comes in the midst of a contentious dispute between Air Canada and the union representing more than ten thousand flight attendants. Both sides continue to negotiate a deal, but progress has stalled as the union remains firm their demands for wages and unpaid work needs to be addressed. The latest on the Air Canada dispute Air Canada has begun cancelling flights ahead of its possible full stoppage this weekend. Air Canada says it's actively rescheduling tickets with other airlines, including competitors, which has brought relief to some travellers at Halifax Stanfield International Airport. 'I'm heading for Sydney, Australia. And I got here and was told my flight was canceled, and they got me rebooked very quickly going through the U.S. instead. Actually, getting me in half an hour earlier than my original flight was scheduled to land,' says traveller Fiona Paterson. Still, the airline says its capacity to rebook 'will be very limited.' As such, Gabor Lucas, the president of Air Passenger Rights, says travelers should know their rights. 'The principle is to wait until the flight is canceled. Don't jump the gun. Give Air Canada one chance to rebook you in accordance with the law,' says Lucas. 'If they fail to do so or refuse to do so, then buy yourself a ticket on a competitor and send Air Canada the bill. Give them 30 days to pay up. They don't pay, serve them with small claims court papers. Don't go to the federal government. The Canadian Transportation Agency is not going to help, and they are swamped with 87,000 complaints. Small claims court is your best friend,' explains Lucas. Meanwhile, Cherenfant says Air Canada eventually rebooked him on a flight leaving out of Halifax Thursday night. 'Hopefully I don't get any more surprises at the last minute,' he says. Halifax Stanfield International Airport opens new facility
Halifax International Airport Authority (HIAA) has opened a new International Connections Facility (ICF) at Halifax Stanfield International Airport to streamline passenger experience, expand cargo capacity and contribute to regional economic growth. Transport Canada and the Government of Nova Scotia contributed $8.3 million and $3 million, respectively to the ICF project. 'This project represents an important step in developing Halifax Stanfield's infrastructure to meet growing demands,' said Joyce Carter, president and CEO of HIAA. 'Opening the ICF enhances how we serve connecting passengers, while laying the groundwork for further improvements coming later this year.' The new space allows international passengers on select flights to move through the airport without exiting the secure area and reclaiming baggage when connecting to a domestic flight. 'The facility will also enable further expansions of aircraft belly cargo space, supporting the movement of goods between Nova Scotia and International markets,' a news release from the Stanfield airport reads. 'Our airports are an integral part of growing our economy, and we are proud to support investments that help to create additional opportunities for business growth and bring more visitors to Nova Scotia,' said Public Works Minister Fred Tilley. 'Halifax International Airport Authority is taking innovative steps to improve and enhance the passenger experience and facilitate trade, which will support a brighter future for the entire region.' Renovations on the existing international arrivals area will continue into 2025. Once finished, the area will allow for increased passenger traffic and cargo capacity. New technology added to security screening line at Halifax Stanfield International Airport
A new piece of technology is being used at a security screening line at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ). The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority's (CATSA's) CT X-ray technology has been added to the Domestic/International checkpoint. The move is the first step in bringing the technology to all screening lines at Halifax Stanfield International Airport and is part of CATSA's national deployment program to introduce CT X-ray systems at several airports over a multi-year period, according to a news release from the federal government. 'As we enter the peak summer season, we are pleased to work closely with our partners at CATSA to introduce an expanded security screening facility, including an additional line that will host one of CATSA's new CT X-ray systems. The implementation of this new technology will help streamline the security process and enhance the passenger experience,' said Dean Bouchard, vice president of airport planning and development at the Halifax International Airport Authority. The new technology means passengers travelling through Halifax will 'no longer need to remove bags with permitted liquids, aerosols and gels (100 ml or less), medical devices, or large electronics – including laptops – from their carry-on bags.' The CT X-ray utilizes three-dimensional rotatable images 'enhancing screening officers' ability to detect explosives and other threat items.'
