Chargers' Trey Lance gets guarantee from Jim Harbaugh after HOF win vs. Lions

The post Chargers' Trey Lance gets guarantee from Jim Harbaugh after HOF win vs. Lions appeared first on ClutchPoints. Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Trey Lance did not waste any time making his presence felt in their Hall of Fame Game against the Detroit Lions on Thursday. Lance connected with tight end Will Dissly in the first quarter to open the scoring and set the tone. After getting glued to the bench of the Dallas Cowboys in the last two seasons, Lance signed a one-year deal worth $2 million with the Chargers in April. The change of scenery could bode well for the 25-year-old signal-caller, who is still looking to find a home in the NFL. The Chargers are his third team in five years. He gave himself a boost after leading Los Angeles past Detroit, 34-7. He threw for 120 yards and two touchdowns, showing off the talent that made him the third overall pick in 2021. While it's only an exhibition game, it displayed Lance's focus and drive. After the game, Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh had positive words for the fifth-year quarterback, lauding his work ethic during training camp. Harbaugh also assured that Lance will get enough opportunities. 'If somebody is playing good in practice, they play good in the games,' said Harbaugh, as quoted by Chargers podcaster Alex Insdorf. 'I thought he really had the same kind of composure and poise. Just in control, there's a presence I've been seeing all camp. He needs game reps and he's gonna get them.' There were high hopes for Lance when he was selected by the San Francisco 49ers out of North Dakota State. He, however, only lasted two seasons with the team before being traded to the Cowboys in 2023. He only played five games in his two-year run in Dallas. In a report from the Associated Press, Lance didn't hide his excitement in getting a fresh start with the Chargers. 'Every place is different. Every coaching staff is different. Every team is different. It's been fun to be here. I've really enjoyed being here, just the joy the guys around the building have. It's a joyful place to be,' said Lance. The Chargers also have quarterbacks Justin Herbert, Taylor Heinicke, and DJ Uiagalelei in the rotation. NFL Hall of Fame preseason game rivals NBA playoffs with shocking viewership nationwide

It appears sports fans are ready for the new NFL season after shocking viewership for the Hall of Fame preseason game this past week. In fact, it rivaled the NBA playoffs. The Hall of Fame Game between the Los Angeles Chargers and Detroit Lions drew 6.9 million viewers on NBC, which was up a whopping 40% from last year, Front Office Sports reported, citing Nielsen ratings. It was the most-watched Hall of Fame Game since 2021. During the 2025 NBA postseason, average viewership across ABC and ESPN was 6.13 million per game, which was up 10% from last year, according to the league, showcasing just how popular the NFL is – even when the games don't count. Trey Lance, not Chargers' starter Justin Herbert, was the one taking snaps with the offense in Canton, Ohio last Thursday night, and he put on a show for all those watching. The third overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft went 12-of-20 passing for 120 yards and two touchdowns thrown in the Chargers' 34-7 beatdown of the Lions. Lance is expected to hold the backup position to Herbert in a season where head coach Jim Harbaugh is likely to build off a 2024 playoff campaign. Meanwhile, head coach Dan Campbell and the Lions didn't have the same production as the scoreboard indicated. As is custom, Jared Goff and many starters on both sides of the ball didn't suit up for this contest, so Kyle Allen, who is battling to be Goff's backup, started under center. He was picked off twice in the game, while other mistakes, including a muffed punt return, are areas the Lions need to clean up. There are many more preseason games to be played in the coming weeks, as every other team across the NFL will suit up for their first game action against another team this week. Perhaps even more NFL fans will be tuning in for those primetime games, as they prepare for what's expected to be another exciting football season.
