Turkey, Indonesia sign multibillion-dollar warplane, frigate deals
ISTANBUL — Turkey has secured a landmark defense export agreement with Indonesia, signing contracts for 48 KAAN fighter aircraft and two İstif-class frigates – a sign of Ankara's growing defense industry footprint in Southeast Asia. On July 26, 2026, Turkey and Indonesia officially signed the commercial contract defining the technical annexes and implementation details of the government-to-government (G2G) procurement agreement for 48 KAAN fifth-generation fighter jets. The original G2G framework agreement had been signed on June 11, 2025. The agreement includes comprehensive cooperation in engineering, manufacturing, and technology transfer. A key component is the establishment of a local aerospace infrastructure in Indonesia, which will serve as a tangible reflection of the strategic depth of the partnership. Deliveries of the 48 aircraft will be carried out over a 10-year period under a phased schedule. The contract also covers long-term industrial collaboration, engineering support, and joint technology development, with Indonesian partners including PT Republik Aero Dirgantara and PT Dirgantara Indonesia. The signing ceremony was attended by Haluk Görgün, President of the Turkish Defense Industry Agency; Şefri Şemsuddin, Indonesian Minister of Defense; Mehmet Demiroğlu, CEO of Turkish Aerospace; Ömer Cihat Vardan, Chairman of Turkish Aerospace; and Air Marshal Yusuf Zuhari, Head of Indonesia's Defense Facilities Agency. KAAN conducted its maiden flight on Feb. 21, 2024, and is expected to enter serial production by 2028, with the first deliveries to the Turkish Air Force planned for 2029. Separately, during the IDEF 2025 defense exhibition here, defense officials from both countries finalized a deal for the supply of two MİLGEM-class, İstif-type frigates. This contract marks the first export of a MİLGEM-class warship to Indonesia. The first İstif-class frigate, TCG İstanbul, was commissioned into the Turkish Navy in January 2024, with serial production of additional ships underway and deliveries expected to continue through the late 2020s. This frigate deal is the third major naval cooperation project between the two countries. The first is the ongoing construction of two 70-meter missile-equipped, fast-attack craft (FAC) by Turkey's TAIS consortium at Sefine Shipyard. First steel was cut in October 2024, and the vessels will feature Havelsan's combat management system. The second is the integration of Turkish weapons and combat systems aboard Indonesia's future Merah Putih-class frigates. These ships, based on the Babcock Arrowhead 140 design, are equipped with Aselsan's radar and sonar systems, Havelsan's ADVENT combat management system and Roketsan's Atmaca anti-ship missiles. Rs 830000000000: Pakistan's close ally to export 48 fifth-generation fighter jets to Indonesia; top features are..., country is...
In its republic's history, Turkey signed its largest defense export deal with Indonesia for 48 KAAN fifth-generation fighter jets on Saturday during the 17th International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF 2025), reported Türkiye Today. This transformative agreement represents a major advance for Turkey's domestic combat aircraft program. A number of high-profile officials attended the signing ceremony. They were Haluk Görgün, head of the Turkish Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB); Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin; TAI Board Chairman Ömer Cihad Vardan; Suay Alpay, Deputy National Defense Minister and TAI Vice Chairman; and TAI General Manager Mehmet Demiroğlu. Financial terms have not been formally revealed, but the Turkish media reports suggest the value of the contract is around $10 billion. At $10 billion, this defense deal is significant for bilateral defense collaboration. On June 11, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced Turkey's plan to export 48 KAAN jets to Indonesia. The signing now makes the agreement formal and represents Turkey's first official export deal for its indigenous fifth-generation fighter jet. Sharing a post on X(previously Twitter), SSB wrote,' On 11 June 2025, we signed the Government-to-Government (G2G) Procurement Agreement with the Indonesian Ministry of Defence for cooperation on a total of 48 KAAN National Combat Aircraft. Today, we have officially signed the commercial contract defining the details and technical annexes of this agreement.' 'This signature is not merely an export milestone—it marks the beginning of a new era in engineering, production, and technology sharing. The local industrial base to be established in Indonesia will stand as a field-proven reflection of our deep-rooted strategic partnership built on friendship,' the post further reads. The contract stipulates a maximum delivery window of 120 months (10 years), signifying a significant production obligation on TAI and the Turkish aerospace sector as a whole. This contract is the first large scale international export deal for the KAAN program, reflecting strong international confidence in Turkey's fifth-generation fighter jet—only a little over a year after its first flight. The plane is armed with the indigenous MURAD AESA radar, internal weapons bays, supercruise capability, and is compatible with fully indigenous munitions. Its advanced technology includes a low radar cross-section and reduced heat signature, making it one of the most advanced fighter platforms in the world, in its class. The KAAN is a fifth generation fighter aircraft being developed by Turkey for more than a decade. It was first publicly launched in 2023 and completed its first test flight in 2024. The serial production of the jet is expected to begin in 2028. Turkey has built three prototypes of the KAAN jet so far. The KAAN fighter jet has been designed to execute multi-role air combat capabilities focusing on air superiority, precision strikes, and survivability amongst others. The fighter or 'KAAN' is being developed as part of Turkish President Recep Erdoğan's effort to ramp up internal aerospace production.

Turkish Defense Ministry Announces Successful Launch of Anti-Ship Missile from Submarine
Ankara - Saba: The Turkish Ministry of Defense announced on Wednesday the successful launch of the domestically produced "Atmaca" anti-ship missile from a submarine, an achievement that enhances the country's naval capabilities. The ministry posted clips of the launch of the missile on its X platform account, which was developed by the Turkish company Roketsan with local expertise. Haluk Görgün, head of the Turkish Defense Industries Presidency, explained that the "Atmaca" missile will now be able to hit its targets from underwater, placing Turkey among the few countries with the capability to launch guided missiles from submarines. The "Atmaca" is considered Turkey's first naval cruise missile, with a range exceeding 220 km. With this missile entering service with the Turkish military, the army will stop using the American "Harpoon" missiles.

Turkish submarine test-fires ‘Atmaca' anti-ship missile
ISTANBUL — The Turkish Navy has conducted a successful firing test of the submarine-launched variant of the Atmaca anti-ship missile, according to Haluk Görgün, head of the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB). The test took place on March 12, 2025, from the submarine TCG Preveze off the coast of Mersin in the Mediterranean Sea, as detailed in a press briefing by the Turkish Ministry of Defense. The missile was encased in a watertight capsule equipped with a propeller, designed to fit the submarine's 533 mm torpedo tube. After launch, the capsule propelled itself away from the submarine before the missile ignited and exited the capsule. Footage shared on social media indicated that the missile was not carrying a live warhead, as there was no impact observed. A critical aspect of the test was the submarine's ability to launch the canister from its torpedo tubes. Developed and produced by Roketsan, the Atmaca missile serves as the primary offensive weapon of the Turkish Navy, gradually replacing the Boeing RGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missile. It is currently deployed on Ada-class corvettes and frigates undergoing the Barbaros mid-life upgrade. International interest in the Atmaca missile has grown, with Indonesia and Malaysia among its export customers. In November 2022, Indonesia signed a contract to procure 45 Atmaca missiles, marking its commitment to enhancing naval capabilities. Malaysia has also opted for the Atmaca missile system, planning to integrate it into its three Littoral Mission Ship (LMS) Batch 2 vessels, which are based on the Turkish Ada-class corvette design.
