Oman LNG sets record for production and safety in 2024
MUSCAT: Oman LNG achieved its highest-ever production output in 2024, alongside maintaining an impressive plant efficiency rate of 98.23 per cent — underscoring its dedication to operational excellence and sustainability. According to CEO Hamad bin Mohammed al Naamany, the company is entering a new expansion phase, marked by the launch of long-term sales contracts that include supply from both Oman LNG and Qalhat LNG. These developments are being supported by advanced upgrades and maintenance initiatives aimed at strengthening the company's performance and cost competitiveness in global markets. The year 2024 also marked a significant shift in Oman LNG's commercial strategy. Long-term contracts now total 10.4 million metric tonnes annually, providing a robust foundation for a flexible and diversified portfolio. This strategy allows the company to maintain reliable supply commitments while remaining agile in responding to short-term market opportunities, thus enhancing the added value delivered to its partners and reinforcing Oman's contribution to global energy security. Al Naamany emphasised the company's role in supporting Oman's carbon neutrality targets by 2050. In 2024, Oman LNG recorded its highest-ever energy efficiency performance and received the 'Golden Path' accolade from the United Nations Environment Programme for methane emissions reduction — highlighting its leadership in producing low-carbon LNG. To support its climate ambitions, the company is investing in cost-effective energy efficiency technologies and long-term emissions management strategies. It is also working closely with local universities on R&D projects, including hydrogen fusion and a pilot methane initiative that could pave the way for new clean energy solutions. In terms of safety, the company achieved over 27 million work hours without a single lost time injury and recorded no operational safety incidents for more than 3,500 consecutive days. Oman LNG has aligned its safety programmes with the Oman Energy Association (OPAL) to ensure its standards remain among the best in the industry. Beyond its operational achievements, Oman LNG remains committed to national development and social responsibility. — ONA

Pact to explore sustainable methane pilot project in Oman
MUSCAT: Oman LNG has signed an agreement with Japan-based Kanadevia Corporation (formerly Hitachi Zosen Corp) to carry out a detailed feasibility study for establishing a pilot plant to produce sustainable methane. The initiative marks a significant step toward expanding clean energy technologies in the Sultanate of Oman. The agreement includes two major components: a technical and commercial evaluation of a future commercial plant and a preliminary engineering study for a smaller-scale pilot facility. The commercial facility is expected to produce up to 18,000 standard cubic metres of sustainable methane per hour, while the pilot plant will initially generate around 1,200 standard cubic metres per hour. The proposed pilot project will feature three core elements: a seawater desalination unit, an electrolyser system to produce hydrogen from water, and a methanation system that combines green hydrogen with captured carbon dioxide to synthesise methane. Technologies such as carbon capture and reuse (CCR) and advanced catalysis will be central to the process. The initial phase will involve the preparation of detailed design specifications, cost estimates, and planning for engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) activities. Hamad bin Mohammed al Naamany, CEO of Oman LNG, said the project seeks to turn environmental challenges into industrial opportunities by reusing carbon dioxide emissions to produce methane. 'This project leverages cutting-edge carbon capture and reuse technologies and integrates them into LNG operations, aligning with our goals for sustainability and innovation,' he stated. This latest agreement builds upon a Memorandum of Understanding signed in March 2024 between the governments of Oman and Japan, which aims to foster collaboration in hydrogen, ammonia, and carbon recycling technologies. — ONA
