Italian Puglia Region Cuts Ties with Israel over Gaza Genocide
The government of Italy's southern Puglia region has cut relations with Israel over its genocide in Gaza, according to Al-Jazeera. Puglia Governor Michele Emiliano stated that the Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Therefore, Emiliano called for an immediate suspension of all relations with all representatives of Israeli government. Emiliano also urged 'all managers and employees of the region, its agencies and participating companies to sever all relations of any kind with the institutional representatives of the Israeli government and with all those subjects attributable to it who are not openly and declaredly motivated by the desire to organize initiatives to stop the massacre of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip,' according to state-run ANSA news agency. Mounting Pressure on Israel Furthermore, Barcelona's city council voted to cut twin-city ties with Israel and suspend its friendship agreement with Tel Aviv over Israel's genocide in Gaza. 'The suffering and death in Gaza over the past year and a half, and recent attacks by the Israeli government, make any relationship unviable,' said Mayor Jaume Collboni during Friday's council session. The move seeks to cut all official relations with the Israeli government until they respect the international law and maintain fundamental rights of the Palestinian people. The city will also suspend a 1998 friendship agreement with Tel Aviv-Jaffa. Therefore, it urged the trade fair organizer Fira de Barcelona not to host any Israeli pavilions or companies which are part of the weapons trade or even profiting from the ongoing war in Gaza. Since the beginning of Hamas-Israel War in Gaza in 2023, the Israeli strikes have killed more than 53,500 Palestinians and wounded more than 118,000, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Russian FM Criticizes Israel's ‘Collective Punishment' of Gaza Civilians
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Thursday described Israeli attacks on Gaza as 'collective punishment of the civilian population,' according to AFP. Lavrov's statement represents one of Moscow's strongest criticisms of Israel that has been committing a genocide in Gaza. The minister also stated that 'measures taken by Israel' in response to the October 7 attack by Hamas 'constitute collective punishment of the civilian population.' Therefore, he described what was happening in Gaza 'incomprehensible and indescribable.' Since the beginning of Hamas-Israel War in Gaza in 2023, the Israeli strikes have killed at least 53,500 Palestinians and wounded more than 118,000, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Hamas has recently agreed to US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff's proposal for a Gaza ceasefire, while an Israeli official has rejected the deal and claimed that it was not Washington's, according to Reuters. 'The proposal includes the release of 10 living Israeli hostages held by Hamas in two groups in return for a 70-day ceasefire and a partial withdrawal from the Gaza Strip,' the source said. The deal also involved the release of a number of Palestinian prisoners by Israel, notably hundreds serving lengthy prison terms. However, an Israeli official dismissed the deal, expressing that no Israeli government could approve such an agreement. He further rejected the confirmation that the deal aligned with Witkoff's proposal. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has recently said that Israel would only agree to a temporary ceasefire in exchange of the release of hostages. Netanyahu also vowed that eradicating Hamas would mark the immediate end of the war. Malta to Recognize Palestinian State in June, Says PM
Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced that Malta will officially recognize the State of Palestine next month, ending more than four decades of hesitation, according to Al-Jazeera. 'We cannot close our eyes to this human tragedy that is getting worse every day,' Abela said during his participation at a political event on Sunday. Abela also unveiled that the formal recognition will follow a conference on June 20, describing the move as a 'moral responsibility' amid Israel's genocide in Gaza. Apart from this, the PM recounted his recent visit to Palestinian refugee camps in Jordan, where he met children evacuated to Malta for medical treatment. He attempted to describe the unthinkable conditions under which Palestinians are living during a devastating war that has been killing, injuring and displacing thousands of people. In this regard, Abela expressed Malta's willingness to welcome pediatrician Dr Alaa Al-Najjar and her family. Al-Najjar lost nine of her ten children because of an Israeli strike on her home, while she was treating patients in a hospital in southern Gaza. Since the beginning of Hamas-Israel War in Gaza in 2023, the Israeli strikes have killed at least 53,500 Palestinians and wounded more than 118,000, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Joint Statement: Over 70 UN Member States Call for Protecting Gazans
Over 70 UN member states signed a joint statement urging the world to protect civilians in armed conflicts, amid mounting fears over starvation and genocide in Gaza, according to Arab News. The statement followed an annual open debate at the UN on the issue of protecting civilians. 'Civilians in armed conflicts continue to live under unthinkable conditions of constant danger, insecurity and suffering,' the joint statement said. Since the beginning of Hamas-Israel War in Gaza in 2023, the Israeli strikes have killed at least 53,500 Palestinians and wounded more than 118,000, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Worst Humanitarian Crisis The statement highlighted reports from the UN's humanitarian agency, OCHA, that warned Gaza is facing the 'worst humanitarian crisis' since the beginning of the war. 'Today, we come with one clear message: The protection of civilians is not optional. It is a legal obligation under international humanitarian law, and a moral imperative we cannot afford to neglect,' the statement added. It also mentioned that women, men, children, older persons, and persons with disabilities, are all suffering. Meanwhile, health workers, farmers, teachers are killed, injured and forced to flee. 'Their protection must not be a secondary consideration — it must be central to all military planning and political decisions,' it said. During the UN debate, Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, stated that the organization has repeatedly warned of imminent famine in Gaza. This starvation is a result of Israel's blockade on humanitarian goods that started in March. Despite the fact that Israel lifted blockade this week, the UN has still struggled to transport desperately needed aid into Gaza. In this context, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said on Wednesday that the Israeli military provided aid trucks with access to Gaza only via an unsafe road. 'Let us reiterate our collective responsibility to protect the most vulnerable, to uphold international law, to prioritize the safety, dignity and rights of civilians, and to ensure that their faces and voices — so often invisible and silenced behind statistics — remain central to our actions,' the statement added.
