Man who showed off illegal stun gun in Hamilton street fined more than £1k
John Jardine, 58, claimed he thought the item he'd bought on a website was simply a powerful torch. A man who showed off an illegal stun gun in a Hamilton street has been fined more than £1000. John Jardine claimed he thought the item he'd bought on a website was simply a powerful torch. Jardine, 58, of Fleming Way, Hamilton, admitted having a prohibited weapon in Argyle Drive on April 15 last year. Hamilton Sheriff Court heard he and another man were seen standing outside a house around 9pm. A witness heard them talking about a taser and Jardine was asked to operate it. A blue spark was seen coming from the device but it wasn't fired at anyone. Jardine then left the area in a taxi. Police officers were shown mobile phone footage of the incident and traced the accused to his home later that night. He told them the stun gun was tucked behind the sofa in his living room. It looked like a torch and had that function as well as being a taser. Jardine said he ordered the item online from the American online company Wish, thinking it was only a "strong" torch. He added: "I just take it when I'm out walking the dog." Defence solicitor Laura Kiernan told the court: "When it arrived at his home it was clear it was also a stun gun. "It's accepted that he should have done something about it at that point, like hand it in to the police." After studying background reports, Sheriff John Speir fined Jardine £1040.

Rezart Hoxhaj, 33, was jailed this week and is soon to be returned to his homeland. An Albanian who claimed he travelled to Britain to work as a mechanic ended up looking after a cannabis cultivation in Hamilton. Rezart Hoxhaj, 33, was jailed this week and is soon to be returned to his homeland. He admitted producing cannabis and being concerned in its supply at a house in Arran Gardens, Silvertonhill, on October 2 last year. Officers found plants and herbal cannabis worth more than £58,000 in the detached three-bedroom property. Hamilton Sheriff Court heard police officers armed with a search warrant arrived at 9am. Neil Thomson, prosecuting, said: 'As they tried to force entry, they became aware of the accused opening a window upstairs and saw him scaling down to the roof of an extension. 'Thereafter he ran towards a wooded area. The police officers gave chase and the accused was arrested a short time later. 'The officers searched the house and saw that most of the rooms were being used for the cultivation of cannabis plants. 'They found 217 plants as well as 7kg of packaged herbal cannabis in vacuum-sealed bags. 'Expert police officers say the total retail value of the drugs could have been £58,200.' Defence lawyer Peter Malone told the court: 'My client is a mechanic and travelled to the UK with the intention of getting employment in that field. 'However, he allowed himself to become involved in this offence and was caught by the police.' Sheriff Colin Dunipace jailed Hoxhaj for 20 months, backdated to October 3 as he has been in custody since his arrest. Mr Malone added: 'He will be returned to Albania when his sentence expires.' Thief avoids jail after cars and watches worth £250k were stolen from home
The watches, which are worth around £150,000, have never been found. A thief has narrowly avoided prison after cars and watches worth £250,000 were stolen from a house in East Kilbride. Hamilton Sheriff Court heard the raid happened during a 20-minute period when the householders were out walking their dog. Leon Barnes, 23, was ordered to do 300 hours of unpaid community work within 12 months. He admitted being involved in the break-in and theft at Glengoyne Court on November 6, 2022. Barnes was caught after his DNA was found inside the property. Neil Thomson, prosecuting, said the householders left around 6.15pm to walk their dog, locking the doors as they did so. He told the court: 'When they returned 20 minutes later they noticed the front door was ajar. There were muddy footprints in the hallway and on the stairs. 'Two Audi cars, each worth approximately £50,000, were missing along with the car keys and a quantity of valuable watches, some of which were Rolex. 'The cars were recovered in Edinburgh but the watches, which are worth around £150,000, have never been found.' Mr Thomson said entry to the house was gained by smashing a rear window. That area was swabbed by scenes of crime officers and Barnes's DNA was found. Barnes, of Drumbrae Drive, Edinburgh, admitted previous convictions. Defence lawyer Mark Hutchison said he was 'in the grip of bad company' at the time of this crime. Mr Hutchison added: 'He has since managed to turn his life around. He got himself off drugs and obtained full-time employment as a scaffolder.' Sheriff Mungo Bovey said he was willing to impose the maximum period of unpaid work as a direct alternative to a custodial sentence.
