Works Ministry records RM94mil in 2024 flood damage
MARANG: The Works Ministry (KKR) recorded RM94.17mil in damage caused by floods in 2024, mostly involving infrastructure such as roads. Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said most of the infrastructure damaged by last year's floods has been repaired, including in Terengganu (RM22.13mil), Kelantan (RM20.38mil) and Perak (RM33.4mil). "This shows that the government is always concerned about areas affected by the Northeast Monsoon (MTL) and recent floods. We have extended assistance, and whatever needed repairs have been fixed,' he told reporters after inspecting the new Marang bridge upgrading project today. He added that the ministry is also prepared for the upcoming MTL expected at the end of this year. Among the preparations in place is a Disaster Operations Room to receive information and respond to complaints about flood-related infrastructure damage. "This operations room is open year-round, but during the MTL season, we will intensify its activities. We will monitor all affected areas nationwide,' he said. Meanwhile, Terengganu Infrastructure, Utilities and Rural Development Committee chairman Datuk Hanafiah Mat said nearly 90 per cent of roads in the state damaged by last year's floods have been repaired by the federal government through the ministry. "Only one road has yet to be repaired - a slope road in Bukit Besi (in Dungun). I understand the tender for that repair work will be issued in two months. All the rest are in good shape,' he said. He also expressed his appreciation to the Federal Government, particularly the Works Ministry, for carrying out the repairs and thanked Nanta for personally inspecting the progress of flood-affected infrastructure restoration. - Bernama

KUALA TERENGGANU – The iconic 'Allah Peliharakanlah Terengganu' landmark located on Bukit Besar will soon be reconstructed, with the total estimated cost reaching RM5 million. Terengganu Infrastructure, Utilities and Rural Development executive councillor Datuk Hanafiah Mat said that the demolition of the original structure was completed by the Public Works Department (JKR) on May 13 at a cost of RM250,000. 'So far, the State Economic Planning Unit (UPEN) has approved the proposed new design. 'The overall project is expected to cost RM4.75 million, including the demolition works, bringing the total to approximately RM5 million,' he said during the Terengganu State Legislative Assembly sitting at Wisma Darul Iman on Monday. He was responding to a question from Hilmi Harun (Pas–Manir) regarding the status and cost of the landmark's restoration. Datuk Hanafiah Mat was responding to a question from Hilmi Harun (Pas–Manir) regarding the status and cost of the landmark's restoration during the Terengganu State Legislative Assembly sitting at Wisma Darul Iman on Monday. According to Hanafiah, the original landmark was built in 1991 by the Terengganu State JKR at an estimated cost of RM1.3 million, using a steel frame structure. 'The structure has now exceeded its intended design lifespan of over 30 years and has not undergone regular structural maintenance. 'It has also been severely affected by corrosion due to constant exposure to sea air, as it is situated on an open hilltop,' he said. He added that, to date, the state government has spent around RM1.57 million on the maintenance of the landmark since its construction. 'Although upgrades to the lighting system and electrical maintenance were previously carried out by the State JKR's Electrical Engineering Division, these works had to be halted as the platform structure was no longer safe for regular maintenance. 'This condition posed not only a risk to the structure itself but also endangered the maintenance personnel,' he said.

Samsuri wants to focus on GE16, says PAS leader
PAS vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said he is stepping down as the Marang division's commissioner as the time has come for someone else to be at the helm. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A PAS leader said that vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar's decision to step down as the party's Marang commissioner could have been prompted by his intention to focus on the 16th general election. Terengganu PAS committee member Hanafiah Mat said Samsuri has a 'huge mission' ahead of him, referring to the next nationwide polls. 'He needs to fully focus on preparing for the 16th general election in order to change the country's political landscape,' Hanafiah told FMT. He said the Terengganu menteri besar must also focus on administering the state. Earlier today, it was reported that Samsuri had announced that he was stepping down as the division's commissioner, a role he has held since 2019. He was reported as saying that the time has come for someone else to be at the helm. Separately, PAS spiritual adviser Hashim Jasin said Samsuri's decision to step down as Marang commissioner was a non-issue since he is still a party vice-president and the Terengganu menteri besar. 'Many would do the same as they want to focus on their other (more important) roles,' he said. Samsuri's decision to step down as the Marang PAS commissioner comes two months after posters were put up in Terengganu demanding that he resign as menteri besar, which analysts said could be linked to the party polls in September. Samsuri had resigned as Perikatan Nasional treasurer in December last year.
