National Day: Patriotism in the air as homes, offices and business premises start flying the Jalur Gemilang

KUALA LUMPUR — August is a month that oozes with the spirit of patriotism, where citizens are encouraged to decorate their homes, offices, and vehicles with the Jalur Gemilang (the Malaysian flag) as a sign of love for the country. With 21 days left until the National Day 2025 celebration, people across the country have already started flying the Jalur Gemilang, the national symbol. A Bernama survey in Kampung Baru, located in the heart of the capital, and at Perumahan Awam Sri Perak, Sentul, found that residents have installed the Jalur Gemilang at their homes to join in the National Month celebration. Moving on to Dataran Merdeka, the atmosphere of the National Day celebration is already palpable, as the area is filled with Jalur Gemilang decorations and various patriotic-themed displays. IN MELAKA, the Jalur Gemilang has started to fly along main roads like Jalan Hang Tuah, Jalan Tun Sri Lanang, Jalan Bendahara, and Jalan Laksamana, thanks to initiatives from the local authorities. Several hotels, private hospitals, and tourist locations have also joined the effort to liven up the National Month celebration, while fewer flags were seen at most residential areas and business premises. The patriotic atmosphere is also increasingly being felt in Kuantan, PAHANG, where the Jalur Gemilang and the Pahang flag are proudly flying along main roads, at business premises, and on government administration buildings in anticipation of the National Month celebration. The Kuantan City Council has also launched the Jalur Gemilang and Pahang State Flag-Hoisting Program from July 25 to September 16 to encourage participation of residents. A retired government official, Sallehuddin Yaakob Rahman, 62, said he intends to install the Jalur Gemilang at his home, but his current flag is worn out. He plans to replace it before National Day on August 31. 'God willing, I will change it to a new one before Merdeka Day, so that we can all help to liven up the atmosphere,' he said. IN KEDAH, the patriotic 'war' of the Jalur Gemilang can also be felt as premises and residential homes in the areas around Kota Setar, Pendang, and Yan districts have begun installing flags. Tan Chin Eng, 62, from Yan, said he usually installs the flag every time the National Month arrives. 'I will try to install it before the celebration day. I've noticed that some premises and houses in this area have started putting up flags since August 1, but there are still many that haven't,' he said. Civil servant Nur Syahirah Azlan, 34, from Kota Setar said she had already installed three Jalur Gemilang flags in front of her house as a symbol of patriotism. 'Every year, my husband and I install the flags, and they stay flying until Malaysia Day. But what I see is that many people still don't fly flags. Maybe because it's not compulsory, they don't care much, but they should at least fly one flag as a sign of love for the country,' she said. Themed 'Malaysia MADANI: A Compassionate Nation,' the National Day 2025 celebration on August 31 will be held at Dataran Putrajaya, while the Malaysia Day celebration will take place on September 16 in Penang. — BERNAMA

#SHOWBIZ: Henry Golding chooses Tuah for his character name in 'The Old Guard 2'

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia-born Hollywood actor Henry Golding has expressed his pride that the legendary Malay folk tale of Hang Tuah found its way into the film The Old Guard 2, now streaming on Netflix. Golding, 38, revealed in a recent interview that director Victoria Mahoney readily accepted his suggestion to name his character 'Tuah'. "She had several other name suggestions and asked for my opinion. The name Tuah was the one that stood out the most. In Malaysian folklore, there's a story about a local warrior named Hang Tuah," he explained. Featured Videos "I think it makes more sense with the element of eternal life and travelling the world. In Malaysia, he is one of the greatest heroes of local folklore. I believe the name is appropriate," Golding added. The actor also wove other local cultural elements into the film, such as the inclusion of a kris. "The kris is the weapon typically used by local warriors in silat, a self-defence art practised in Southeast Asia, particularly in Indonesia and Malaysia. "I'm happy that Victoria was so open to working on that. It also gave it a more personal element. It was exciting to be able to bring a piece of who I am to the character," he said. Aside from Golding, The Old Guard 2 also features a stellar cast including Charlize Theron, Uma Thurman, Kiki Layne, Veronica Ngo, Matthias Schoenaerts, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Marwan Kenzari, and Luca Marinelli.

From ‘Kopi Peng' to ‘Tuah': Malaysians flood Zoo Melaka contest to name panther cub, submission form closes early

MELAKA, July 4 — A Zoo Melaka contest that invited the public to name a black panther cub has seemingly closed ahead of schedule, after drawing thousands of submissions. The competition, which was scheduled to run from July 1 to July 25, aimed to name a male cub born at the zoo on February 24, 2025. At the time of writing, the submission form says that it is 'no longer accepting responses.' New Straits Times (NST) today reported that the zoo had received over 20,000 submissions. With the submission form no longer active, netizens have taken to the zoo's Instagram and Facebook pages to post their name suggestions in the comments. Among them were 'Kopi Peng (Iced Coffee)', 'Si Dakwat (Ink)' and 'Tuah' — a nod to the popular Melaka folklore character Hang Tuah. The cub is part of ongoing efforts to raise awareness about local wildlife conservation and the captive breeding of the endangered Malayan panther. According to the NST report, Zoo Melaka director Zahidah Izzati Zeid said the naming contest was designed to engage the public and raise awareness of the zoo's conservation work. 'By giving the public the opportunity to name the Malayan panther cub, we hope to garner public interest and create awareness on the success of our captive breeding initiatives of local wild Malaysian species,' she was quoted as saying.

Hate To Break It To You, But There's No Hang Tuah In The Old Guard 2

Subscribe to our FREE Sleeper-hit film The Old Guard, which was released in 2020, follows the story of a group of mercenaries who could not be killed. That's right, they are immortal. Releasing on Netflix tomorrow (2 July) is its highly anticipated sequel – The Old Guard 2 – which brings a new addition to the cast of its unkillable characters: Malaysian-born Crazy Rich Asians star Henry Golding. The movie introduces Tuah, who is played by Henry and is also an immortal character. At first, there's not much to make of it – a Southeast Asian actor playing a character named Tuah is not unusual. That is, until we spotted the weapon he wields in the movie poster: a Keris. Say what? Combining the name Tuah and a keris brings his character close to a portrayal of Hang Tuah. For context, Hang Tuah is a storied hero in Malay legend, a powerful warrior and Laksamana (court admiral) from the Melaka Sultanate famous for his loyalty, martial skill, and tales involving a magical keris called Taming Sari as well as rivalries such as that with Hang Jebat. Malaysians went wild with theories that the character is actually THE Hang Tuah. read some theory about the old guard 2 and there is a chance that henry golding is hang tuah in it 😭😭😭 this is genuinely mad if u know anything about malay history — ْ (@d00scar) One of the movie's teaser posters revealed more of the character, showing him holding what is obviously a keris, which is also Hang Tuah's signature weapon. That is definitely a keris. Image: IMP Awards If he really is supposed to be some incarnation of Hang Tuah, he is certainly a more modern one in t-shirt and slacks. Hang Tuah is usually pictured as a man with long hair, a moustache, and beard, while wearing traditional Malay attire including a tanjak (traditional Malay headgear). Veteran musician M. Nasir played Hang Tuah in the 2004 film Puteri Gunung Ledang. Image: Illuminasi As far as Henry's portrayal goes, he already has the facial hair down. Perhaps this is what Hang Tuah would look like in the 21st century. Unfortunately, Henry revealed in an The Old Guard 2 features a star-studded cast including Charlize Theron, Uma Thurman, Henry Golding, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Share your thoughts with us via TRP's .
