(Agencies/Instagram) Sheeba Chaddha has played a wide range of characters in her career, but not many know that she shares a unique connection with Shah Rukh Khan — she's his junior from Delhi University's Hans Raj College and has twice portrayed his mother on screen. In a candid conversation with Siddharth Kannan, the 52-year-old actress opened up about her experiences working with the superstar, from a blink-and-miss appearance in Dil Se to heartwarming moments on the sets of Raees and Zero. She recalled that in both Zero and Raees, she played Shah Rukh's mother, but only realised later that she never reminded him of their college connection. During the shoot of Raees, she wasn't even in a scene with him, yet SRK mentioned her in an interview, asking viewers to watch out for her performance. In the same interview, Sheeba recalled how the Jawan actor's manners stood out on set. During a scene in Zero where he was being beaten up and she had to step in to save him, SRK politely checked with her beforehand if it was okay to make physical contact for the shot. She found it thoughtful and endearing. For her, that small gesture made the entire experience feel warmer and more personal. Her association with SRK actually began years earlier, during the filming of Dil Se. Although her role was small, the experience stood out because she got to shoot in Dalhousie and watch Shah Rukh in action. On one snowy day, with Manisha Koirala absent due to other work, director Mani Ratnam personally asked Sheeba to wear Manisha's costume and walk as her body double for an important scene. Sheeba Chaddha grew up in Delhi, where theatre quickly became her passion. She started out attending workshops, eventually studying English literature at Hans Raj College, where filmmaker Anurag Kashyap was her classmate. Over the years, she's become one of Bollywood's most dependable character actors, with memorable roles in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Parzania, Delhi 6, Luck by Chance, and Talaash. She's equally at home on TV, with shows like Kasturi, Na Aana Is Des Laado, and Hitler Didi, and she's shone on stage in productions like C for Clown, The Blue Mug, and Hedda Gabler. Her work isn't just limited to screen and stage — she's also part of The Company Theatre in Mumbai and has embraced the digital space with TVF's Permanent Roommates. From indie films to mainstream hits, Sheeba has built a career on versatility, making every role, no matter how small, worth remembering.

She Played SRK's Mom In Zero But In Real Life The Actress Used To Call Him ‘College Senior'

Last Updated: Sheeba Chaddha, who studied at the same college as Shah Rukh Khan, reflects on playing his mother in two films and shares his respectful on-set behaviour. Veteran actress Sheeba Chaddha, the recent favourite for her excellent work in Badhaai Do, Doctor G and Pagglait, recently talked about her age-old relationship with Shah Rukh Khan. In a moving interview with Siddharth Kannan, she revealed their common college origins and how, surprisingly, she went from being his junior to portraying his mother on screen. Sheeba and SRK both studied at Delhi's Hans Raj College, but he was eight years her senior. Recalling this, she said, 'I acted as his mother in Zero and Raees. But, he is my senior from college. I am realising only now that I forgot to ask him to remember he was my senior from Hans Raj." Their First on-Screen Pairing Their first on-screen pairing was in Dil Se (1998), although Sheeba appeared only briefly. She cherished that experience, having said that, 'I almost have no role in Dil Se. It was so small that I have forgotten what the role was. But the fact that I got to shoot in Dalhousie and watch Shah Rukh Khan…" She also included an interesting anecdote from that shoot, 'Manisha Koirala wasn't present when I went to shoot. Actually, one day Manisha wasn't on the set because they had some other work and they needed to take a very crucial shot amidst the snow. There was a scene of them walking." For this, Mani Ratnam personally approached me and asked me if I was comfortable wearing Manisha's attire and walking as her body double." Playing SRK's Mom Years later, Sheeba appeared on screen with Shah Rukh in Raees and Zero, where she played his mother. Although they shared no scene in Raees, SRK praised her in public nonetheless. She said in awe, 'When I filmed in Raees, he came to Delhi for some interview, where he has gone and said there is this heroine in Raees who is playing my mother. Keep an eye on her, she is great. All this, without a single scene with him. Bahaut hi alag hi type ke aadmi hai woh (He is very different)." One memory that stands out about Sheeba was during Zero's shoot, when Shah Rukh showed his humble nature. 'I remember, we had a hugging scene. It was more like he was getting beaten up and I had to rescue him. He was playing a dwarf in that film. He just went to me before the scene and said, 'Is it okay if I touch you? So I was like, 'Yeah theek hai chalo chalo.' He is so lovely." She contributed warmly, 'He had known my name even before I arrived on set. And it's a different feeling." Why She Plays Mom Roles Discussing how frequently she is playing mother roles, Sheeba stated, 'Half the time I am playing mothers to sons who are just 10-12 years younger than me. Television does that a lot… In the beginning, I was in shock, but I made my peace with it, told myself it is just work, do it and move on." Sheeba Chaddha's journey, full of warmth and humility, reflects not just the resilience of an actor but the quiet strength behind some of Bollywood's most impactful performances. 'He never touched without permission'; Shah Rukh Khan's college junior and 'Zero' co star Sheeba Chaddha shares bond

(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) Sheeba Chaddha , one of Bollywood's most respected character actors, recently opened up about her longstanding connection with Shah Rukh Khan , one that began in the corridors of Delhi University's Hans Raj College. In a candid chat with Siddharth Kannan, Sheeba fondly recalled being SRK's junior in college, even though she never brought it up with him during their work together in films. Despite sharing screen space in 'Zero' and 'Raees', she mentioned that she never reminded him of their shared DU roots, something she now finds amusing in hindsight. A Gentleman on and off camera While talking about their time on set, Sheeba was particularly moved by SRK's respectful nature. Recalling a scene in 'Zero', where her character rushes to protect his, she said Shah Rukh asked her before the take, 'Is it okay if I touch you here for the shot?' That small act of courtesy stayed with her. 'He never touched me without permission,' she emphasized, adding that such consideration and warmth made the experience all the more special. What struck her even more was SRK's generosity, even during Raees, where they didn't share a scene, he praised her performance in an interview, encouraging audiences to notice her. It's gestures like these, Sheeba said, that set Shah Rukh Khan apart not just as an actor, but as a person. From body double to spotlight Their first collaboration goes back to 'Dil Se', where Sheeba had a tiny role, but one unique moment stood out. With Manisha Koirala unavailable for a crucial scene in snowy Dalhousie, Mani Ratnam asked Sheeba to step in as her body double, wearing Manisha's costume and walking for the camera. She took it in stride, grateful for the opportunity to observe SRK at work so early in her career.
