Who should be the Happy State Bank High School Athlete of the Week?
Golf season is over in the Lone Star State, but baseball, softball and tennis continue as the spring semester comes to a close. Standouts from each sport are among this week's nominees for the Happy State Bank High School Athlete of the Week. Advertisement The Globe-News is taking weekly nominations and will release a list of finalists for the High School Athlete of the Week each Tuesday. Nominations are due by 5 p.m. Saturday and can be submitted through email at sports@ by messaging the Globe-News through its Facebook page or on Twitter @amarilloglobe. Students in all varsity sports are eligible and can only be named Athlete of the Week one time per season, per sport, and athletes from one school cannot win more than three consecutive weeks. The poll will close Thursday and the winners will be announced Friday each week. Take a moment to look at some of the top performances in the last week and vote on Happy State Bank High School Athlete of the Week This Week's Finalists Bo Bradley, Texline boys golf — Bradley placed first individually at the Class 1A UIL State Golf Tournament, shooting 74 strokes over 18 holes to claim the state title. Lauren Brooks, Canyon girls tennis — Brooks earned a spot at the UIL State Tennis Tournament with a 3-0 showing at the Region I-4A tournament. The Lady Eagles' standout earned a bye in the first round of the state tournament with his performance. Gabby Dishong & Emmalee Sillivent, Randall girls tennis — The girls doubles duo of Dishing and Sillivent turned in a 3-0 performance at the Region I-4A tournament, going 3-0 to earned a bye in the first round of the UIL State Tennis Tournament. Jesse Flores, West Plains baseball — Flores notched four RBIs on two hits to help lead the Wolves to a series win against Mountain View in the area round of the playoffs. Jackson Langford, Randall boys golf — Langford placed fourth individually at the Class 4A UIL State Golf Tournament, shooting 147 in two rounds and helping the Raiders to a fourth-place finish in the team standings. Angel Ochoa, Booker boys tennis — Ochoa earned a spot at the UIL State Tennis Tournament with a 3-0 showing at the Region I-1A tournament. The Kiowas' standout earned a bye in the first round of the state tournament with his performance. Yaritza Vargas, Dumas softball — Vargas notched two clutch hits during the Demonettes' win against Brownwood in the regional semifinals. The sophomore hit an inside-the-park home run to tie the game at 6-6, later knocking a two-RBI triple into the outfield to put Dumas ahead 8-6. May 2025 Election Day reminders: Last day to register to vote is Thursday
With Thursday being the last day to register to vote, Amarillo voters and residents of surrounding areas in Potter and Randall counties are preparing for the upcoming May 3 election. The Amarillo League of Women Voters will host two Nonpartisan Candidate Forums in April, which are also sponsored by Elevate Amarillo. The first forum, set for April 15, will feature the races for Amarillo Mayor and City Council. The April 22 forum will cover the races for the Amarillo College Board of Regents and Amarillo ISD Board of Trustees. Refreshments will be served at 5:30 p.m., with the forums beginning at 6 p.m. at the Virgil Patterson Auditorium inside Happy State Bank, located at 7th and Taylor in Amarillo. Both forums will be streamed on KFDA's website, Attendees will be able to interact with the candidates, hear their responses to questions, and pick up a copy of the League's 2025 Nonpartisan Voters Guide. Those who will be attending in person must enter the Virgil Patterson Auditorium through the Happy State Bank parking garage, where there is ample covered parking. Here's everything you need to know to register, vote early, and/or participate on Election Day. Last day to register to vote: April 3(Texas law requires voter registration at least 30 days before Election Day.) Early voting period: April 22-April 29 (Polls are closed on Monday, April 21 for San Jacinto Day)(Early voting typically starts 12 days before Election Day and ends four days prior. Specific hours and locations will be determined by Potter and Randall counties.) Last day to receive application for ballot by mail: April 22 (Applications must be received by the 11th day before Election Day.) Election day: May 3(Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.) Note: These dates follow Texas election norms. Confirm all details with Potter County Elections (806-379-2299) or Randall County Elections (806-468-5510) closer to the election. To register, you must be a U.S. citizen, a resident of Amarillo (Potter or Randall County), at least 18 years old by Election Day, and not a convicted felon unless your sentence is completed or you have been pardoned. Complete a Texas Voter Registration Application (available at libraries, post offices, or county offices). Mail or deliver the completed application to: Potter County: Elections Administrator, P.O. Box 9618, Amarillo, TX 79105 Randall County: Elections Administrator, 1604 5th Ave, Canyon, TX 79015 Your voter registration must be received by Thursday, April 3 to vote in the May 3 election. To check your registration status, visit or contact your county office. To register: When registering, you will need to provide your Texas driver's license number, Texas personal ID number issued by DPS, or the last four digits of your Social Security number. To vote in-person: You must present one of these valid forms of photo ID: Texas driver's license (DPS issued) Texas election identification certificate (DPS issued) Texas personal ID card (DPS issued) Texas handgun license (DPS issued) U.S. military photo ID U.S. citizenship certificate with photo U.S. passport (book or card) If your ID expired within the last four years, it is still acceptable for voting. If you are 70 or older, you can use your ID regardless of its expiration date. If you do not have one of these forms of ID, you can still vote with a secondary form of identification (e.g., utility bill, bank statement) and must sign a "Reasonable Impediment Declaration" form explaining why you couldn't obtain a photo ID. In-person early voting Available to all registered voters. Locations will be announced closer to the election. Bring an acceptable photo ID. Election Day voting Vote at any polling location in your registered county. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voting by mail Eligible voters include those 65 or older, disabled, out of the county during voting, expecting to give birth near Election Day, or confined in jail but otherwise eligible. To apply for a ballot by mail (ABBM): Print the ABBM form or submit an order online to have one mailed to you. Complete Sections 1 through 4 and sign Section 5. If you couldn't sign, someone who witnessed your signature must complete Section 6. Mail the completed ABBM to your county's Early Voting Clerk (Potter County: Elections Administrator, P.O. Box 9618, Amarillo, TX 79105; Randall County: Elections Administrator, 1604 5th Ave, Canyon, TX 79015). Deadline for ABBM Submission: April 22 Note: Do not mail, fax, or email completed applications to the Secretary of State's office. Always send them to your county's early voting clerk. If you cannot reasonably obtain one of the acceptable forms of photo ID, you can still vote by presenting a secondary form of ID (e.g., utility bill, bank statement) and completing a "Reasonable Impediment Declaration" form. A person of your choice or an election worker can assist you at the polls, but that person cannot be your employer, your union officer, or someone who represents your employer or union. If you're physically unable to enter the polling location, you can vote curbside. Contact your county elections office to arrange curbside voting if necessary.
